Id say with early looks, Inception will do in 260-320 million range, basically the same range as the states. Hopefully its higher ends on both. Sorcerer's Apprentice and K&D both still look like good candidates for over 200 WW. I really don't think Shrek will go any lower than at least 435 million at this point, its doing very well even with DM and TS3 in it's face.

"Registering a strong Germany opening bolstered by dazzling holdover engagements in the U.K., France and South Korea, "Inception" claimed the No. 1 spot on the foreign theatrical circuit, grossing $53.7 million on the weekend from some 7,500 screens in 51 markets.

Warner Bros.' release of director Christopher Nolan's sci-fi thriller starring Leonardo DiCaprio has racked up an accumulated gross total overseas of $170 million. The first-place Germany debut surged to $7.1 million from 715 locations for a rousing per-screen average of nearly $10,000.

The U.K. provided $5 million from 750 locations in the film's third frame for a market cume of $31.5 million. South Korea kicked in $5.1 million from 395 sites, enough for a No. 2 ranking and a market cume of $14.5 million.

Dipping nearly 40% from its prior weekend's No. 1 gross figure, Pixar/Disney's "Toy Story 3" in 3D dropped to the weekend's No. 2 spot, capturing $39.1 million drawn from 8,213 screens in 48 markets and hoisting the film's accumulated foreign tally to $436.4 million and to $826.1 million worldwide.

"Toy 3" also continues No. 1 in Japan where the fourth weekend provided $7.1 million from 529 venues for a market total of $61.8 million.

In Spain, the cume is $15.5 million after two rounds, the latest of which provided $3.3 million from 710 sites. "Toy Story 3" now ranks as the seventh biggest-grossing animation title ever released overseas from any distributor.

Stretching out overseas with openings in at least nine markets was the weekend's No. 3 title, Sony's "Salt," which grossed $24.5 million overall on the weekend from 2,850 screens in 29 offshore territories, hoisting its early international cume to $32.8 million.

Director Phillip Noyce's Cold War thriller starring Angelina Jolie -- who is displaying offshore drawing power -- took the No. 1 spot in six territories, including South Korea ($6.5 million from 531 sites), Russia ($5.5 million from 706 situations), the Philippines ($1.25 million from 80 screens) and Malaysia ($1.135 million from 110 spots).

The Jackie Chan-Jaden Smith vehicle has compiled a foreign gross total of $81.9 million (including China) since opening overseas on June 9.

So far Summit International's "The Twilight Saga: Eclipse" has drawn an estimated $356.7 million in foreign boxoffice after a weekend estimate of $11.2 million drawn from 5,963 screens in 67 territories. An India opener provided an estimated $965,000 from 350 situations.

Setting records in Latin and South America was "Despicable Me," which gathered $10.5 million overall on the weekend from 1,798 situations in 20 markets, pushing its overseas gross total to $29.2 million. The family-oriented, 3D animation title featuring the voice of Steve Carell recorded Universal's biggest opening weekend ever in Mexico, where it drew an estimated $4.5 million from 497 playdates for a 36% market share.

No 1 debuts were also logged in Argentina ($1.4 million from 93 sites for a $15,054 per-screen average) and in Peru ($1 million from 47 sites for a $21,277 per-screen average), both record market openings for Universal. "Despicable Me" has 42 overseas territories yet to play, with openings in Brazil, Hong Kong, India and Israel teeing up this week.

A Mexico opening provided the Jerry Bruckheimer production starring Nicolas Cage and Jay Baruchel $1.9 million from 355 screens. Debuts in six markets, including Hong Kong, are due this week.

Opening in three markets, including the U.K. ($5.5 bagged from 443 locations), Fox's "The A-Team" grossed $7.175 million on the weekend from 744 screens in 11 markets. Overseas cume stands at $68.3 million.

Premiering in Russia, Holland, the Ukraine and Israel was Warner Bro.'s "Cats & Dogs: The Revenge of Kitty Galore." The family-oriented title drew $3.2 million from 873 screens with 74% of the take coming from 3D venues. Openings in the U.K. and France loom this week.

Propelled by openings in Spain ($1.85 million from 335 locations) and Venezuela, Sony's "Grown Ups" laughed all the way to $3.8 million on the weekend from a total of 1,125 screens in 16 markets. Early international cume for the comedy stands at $18.2 million.

Hottest newcomer in France was "L'age de raison" ("The Age of Reason"), director Yann Samuell's comedy-fantasy starring popular French actress Sophie Marceau. The Mars Distribution release bowed at 380 screens nationwide, ranking No. 7 with an estimated gross of $1.2 million. In Paris, "Reason" finished No. 5, playing at 50 sites.

"Holding strong on the foreign theatrical circuit -- down just 15% on the weekend -- Warner Bros.' "Inception" claimed the top spot for the second consecutive stanza, grossing an estimated $46.6 million from some 8,000 screens in 58 markets.

Over a period of a month, director Christopher Nolan's sci-fi thriller starring Leonardo DiCaprio has drawn a total foreign boxoffice take of $250 million, with the U.K. (market cume $39.4 million) and Japan ($23.7 million) throwing off a good chunk of the total action. A No. 1 Spain opening tallied $4.5 million from 491 sites while a No. 2 Brazil debut provided $2 million from 312 locations.

Newcomer "Step Up 3D," the third installment of the urban dance franchise released offshore by Summit International and Universal, played at 1,606 sites in 11 markets for an opening gross of $12.3 million. It ranks No. 5 on the weekend.

Universal handled the "Step Up 3D" premiers in the U.K. ($3.2 million from 574 locations), Australia ($3 million from 288 spots, the biggest market opening of the three-film franchise) and New Zealand ($312,000 from 57 sites, also the biggest opening for the franchise).

Overall, 2010 offshore continues strongly. While July boxoffice on the foreign theatrical circuit slowed somewhat relative to last year -- due in large measure to the huge entertainment distraction known as the June 11-July 11 World Cup soccer tournament -- 2010 overall remains significantly ahead of 2009's overseas boxoffice pace.

According to studio figures, the big six Hollywood majors -- 20 Century Fox, Disney, Warner Bros., Paramount, Universal and Sony -- have collected combined foreign boxoffice of $7.926 billion, 32% ahead of last year's January through July figure of $5.978 billion.

At the half-year mark, overseas boxoffice for the American majors was a mighty 43% above 2009's January through June figure. Full calendar year 2009 finished with record foreign boxoffice for the major studios of $10.7 billion.

Fox leads the pack through July with foreign boxoffice of $2.206 billion followed by Disney ($1.719 billion), Warner Bros. ($1.450 billion), Paramount ($1.330 billion), Universal ($726 million) and Sony ($494.5 million).

The year's dominant boxoffice film, "Avatar," is to be re-released by Fox in seven overseas markets on Aug. 26, via a "special edition." The James Cameron epic should easily surpass the $2 billion foreign gross mark by month's end. "Avatar's" current offshore cume stands at a record $1.996.5 billion.

"Shrek Forever After" in 3D is Paramount's top-grossing title through July, and is still playing. Latest stanza overseas generated $10 million from 5,472 venues in 57 markets, shoving the DreamWorks Animation title's foreign cume to $426.7 million.

Meanwhile, the weekend's No. 2 title, Pixar/Disney's "Toy Story 3" in 3D, drew $29.4 million in its latest round overseas at 7,928 screens in 49 markets, pushing its total foreign gross to close to the half-billion dollar mark ($498.7 million). It is now the third largest-grossing animation title ever released on the foreign circuit.

The animation threequel with its $7.7 million weekend and its $78 million market cume is the biggest-grossing animation title ever released in the U.K. In Japan, "Toy Story 3" etched its fifth consecutive No. 1 weekend with $5.4 million from 526 venues for a market cume of $77.5 million. A Korea bow generated $4.8 million from 155 locations.

No. 3 on the weekend, Sony's "Salt," opened No. 1 in Thailand, Singapore and the Philippines, and drew $16.9 million at 3,517 screens in 39 markets. The Cold War thriller starring Angelina Jolie has grossed a total of $62.8 million since its foreign opening on July 21.

Vying for the top spot in Germany plus taking first-place bows in Russia and four other markets, Sony's "Grown Ups" came up with $12.7 million on the weekend at some 2,300 screens in a total of 30 markets. Total foreign gross for the Adam Sandler comedy is $33.5 million. It ranks No. 4 on the weekend.

Fox's "Knight and Day" has rolled up $128 million in total foreign boxoffice thanks to a $12.2 million weekend at 4,500 screens in 47 territories. A No. 2 U.K. bow for the action comedy costarring Tom Cruise and Cameron Diaz generated $3.9 million from 432 spots.

A strong Spain debut ($3 million from 558 screens) plus a No. 1 opening in Malaysia ($1.2 million from 77 spots) helped propel Paramount's "The Last Airbender" to a weekend tally of $10.2 million from a total of 2,519 locations in 25 markets. Overseas cume so far for director M. Night Shyamalan's fantasy adventure stands at $53 million.

Opening in four markets, including a No. 1 bow in Brazil ($3.2 million from 278 locations, distributor Universal's biggest market debut ever), "Despicable Me" took in an estimated $9.8 million overall from 2,170 venues in 24 territories. With 40 markets yet to play, including key openings in Australia and Europe, Universal's family-oriented, 3D animation title featuring the voice of Steve Carell has collected a foreign gross so far of $43.5 million. The film opens in Venezuela this week.

Since its June 9 foreign opening, Sony's "The Karate Kid" update costarring Jackie Chan and Jaden Smith has rolled up a foreign gross of nearly $100 million ($94.7 million). Latest weekend at 2,390 screens in 34 territories captured $7.1 million.

Warner's family oriented "Cats and Dogs: The Revenge of Kitty Galore" played 2,456 screens in 16 markets and came up with $6.9 million on the weekend, including a $2.6 million opening in the U.K. at 486 situations and a $1.2 million France debut at 467 screens. Overseas cume stands at $11.1 million.

Disney's "The Sorcerer's Apprentice" from producer Jerry Bruckheimer lifted its offshore boxoffice to $54.2 million thanks to a $5.9 million weekend at 3,244 screens in 34 markets, which the distributor calculates is about 35% of the international marketplace. Openings this week include bows in Brazil, France, Japan and the U.K.

Summit International's "The Twilight Sage: Eclipse" made off with $372.8 million in foreign boxoffice after a weekend gross of $5.1 million generated at an unspecified number of screens in 68 territories. The film ranks among the top five in Germany and Australia.

Top local-language newcomer in France was Studio Canal's release of "Insoupconnable" ("Above Suspicion"), director-coscripter Gabriel Le Bomin's second feature costarring Canadian actor Marc-Andre Grondin and French actress Laura Smet. The thriller based on Yanguy Viel's novel about lovers trying to fleece an older man drew an estimated $650,000 from 220 situations, opening in the No. 9 spot (No. 7 in the Paris area).

Finishing in the No. 8 in France was "L'age de raison" ("The Age of Reason"), a comedy fantasy starring Sophie Marceau. Second round at 432 sites collected an estimated $900,000 from 432 locations for a market cume of $2.5 million.

Other international cumes: Fox's "Predators," $59 million (thanks to a $3 million weekend at 1,900 screens in 48 territories); DreamWorks Animation/Paramount's "How to Train Your Dragon," $266 million (thanks to a $1.3 million opening in Japan at 295 locations); Fox's "Marmaduke," $29.5 million; Universal's "Get Him to the Greek," $22.3 million; Fox's "The A-Team," $75.4 million (after a $2.9 million weekend at 952 screens in six markets); and Universal's "Hanni und Nanni," $5.3 million from Germany and Austria only. This is F*ing incredible!

32% ahead of 2009 year to date?!?!?
And that's with the depressed figures from the month long World Cup! That's pretty HUGE, and no doubt helped massively by Avatar. Afterall, about 1.5 billion of it's gross overseas was earned in 2010.

Also, the overperformance of Alice in Wonderland and Toy Story 3 has helped out a lot.

Inception, if it can continue it's great holds in the coming weeks could also play as a great contributer to foreign grosses this year.

Is this going to be the first year ever that the foreign box office out grosses the North American Box office?

I mean, it makes sense that it would.
North American population = about 350 million

Foriegn population = BILLIONS!!!!

It really is amazing to see how many films will be financially saved thanks to the foriegn box office.

Knight and Day is going to gross well over 150 million, and probably close to 250 million worldwide.
Not a huge success, but will save the studio from losing money on it.

The last Airbender looks like it will gross in excess of 100 million on the foreign circut, bring it somewhere between 230-250 million worldwide.
Also saves the studio from financial disaster.

Salt is on target to a tleast match it's domestic performance, making a final gross of 200-250 million worldwide likely. Also save the flick from financial disappointment.

And even the sorcerer's apprentice, with only 35% of the foreign market opened so far, has already grossed 54 million. It will gross in excess of 100 million overseas, and might even reach higher than that. It will still lose the studio money, but the bleeding could have been much worse!!!

Studios may hopefully start gearing movies towards the OS audience.

The movies you mentioned are all typically big OS. Fantasy, Cruise and Jolie.

Also, fuck Fox. I want to see Avatar 3D just because I missed it before but I really hope it doesn't do well.

Foreign box-office has beaten the US box-office last year already. The article says that $10.7 billion was grossed last year by major studios only. In the USA around $10.6 billion was grossed last year altogether:

I always found it weird that the market share for foreign box office lagged behind the domestic. It seems as though a good majority of U.S. films movies make more money overseas (2-3x as much in some cases), and then you have the collective grosses of local pictures on top of that. What's the deal?

One question when they are comparing domestic to OS are they comparing all the movies made or only the movies made in US and then released in OS markets? Or maybe collectively calculating the sum of all the movies released in US vs sum of these movies is OS markets ?

"Warner Bros.' "Inception" took the No. 1 spot for the third consecutive stanza on the foreign theatrical circuit, drawing boxoffice of $34.6 million from about 7,300 screens in 59 markets.

Over five rounds, director Christopher Nolan's sci-fi thriller starring Leonardo DiCaprio has accumulated a total overseas gross of $314 million.

Foreign gross action for "Inception" is far swifter than that for DiCapiro's last starring vehicle, director Martin Scorsese's "Shutter Island," which drew a total of $161.3 million from the foreign theatrical circuit, most of which ($129.1 million) came from territories handled by Paramount.

"Inception's" top market overall remains the U.K. (market cume, $44.7 million) but the biggest weekend numbers were registered in Spain, where the film continued in the No. 1 spot with $2.9 million drawn from 498 screens for a market total of $10.5 million.

Millennium Films/Nu Image Films' "The Expendables" opened internationally day and date with the film's domestic bow in about 20 markets via a myriad of territorial distributors.

Universal reports its No. 2 Spain opening of the Sylvester Stallone super-action vehicle, costarring Jason Statham, Jet Li, Dolph Lundgren, Eric Roberts and Mickey Rourke, tallied an eventful $1.7 million from 344 sites. Roadshow opened "The Expendables" No. 1 in Australia at 188 locations for an estimated $2.5 million.

Opening No. 4 in Australia was Universal's "Scott Pilgrim vs. the World," which drew an estimated $1 million from its two-market foreign debut (including New Zealand) from a total of 217 screens. The Down Under tally for the comedy-fantasy costarring Michael Cera and Mary Elizabeth Winstead was $900,000 from 177 situations. A Russia opening is due this week.

The weekend's No. 2 title, "Toy Story 3," wound up two months on the foreign theatrical circuit with a cume of $539.3 million, making the Pixar/Disney 3D title the distributor's biggest-grossing animation release of all time overseas, surpassing 2003's "Finding Nemo" by $11.1 million.

A muscular Thailand debut propelled "Toy Story 3" to a $22.7 million overall from 7,773 venues in 50 markets. Top market is Japan where the threequel captured the No. 1 spot for the sixth consecutive round, leveraging the Obon national holiday to $6.1 million from 513 situations for a market cume of $95.8 million.

In the U.K., "Toy Story 3" remains No. 1 with an estimated $5.1 million drawn from 675 locations in its fourth round. Market cume stands at $91.5 million, making the threequel the market's biggest animation hit ever.

Opening in seven markets in Europe, South America and the Far East, Disney's "The Sorcerer's Apprentice" bounced to $15 million on the weekend from 3,225 sites overall in a total of 41 territories. It ranks No. 3 on the weekend.

The Jerry Bruckheimer production costarring Nicolas Cage, Jay Baruchel and Alfred Molina has grossed $72.5 million so far offshore drawn from, Disney calculates, 65% of the international marketplace.

Biggest new markets were France (a dominant No. 1 with $4.7 million from 435 sites), Japan ($3.4 million from 354 spots), the U.K. ($2 million from 475 locations) and Brazil ($1.2 million from 225 screens). Worldwide gross for "Apprentice" stands at $132 million with openings in four markets, including Italy and Venezuela, due this week.

Tallying $13.2 million from 2,452 screens in 20 territories was Summit/Universal's "Step Up 3D," which has grossed a total of $32 million over two rounds so far, and finished No. 4 on the weekend.

Universal reports $3.7 million of "Step Up's" weekend total came from 833 dates in the three markets the distributor is handling: the U.K., Australia and New Zealand. Openings of the third installment of the urban dance franchise are due this week in France, Switzerland and Singapore.

Since its foreign theatrical opening on July 21, Sony's "Salt" has collected total boxoffice of $83.2 million. On the weekend, the Cold War thriller starring Angelina Jolie drew $9.5 million from 2,900 locations in 48 territories, clinching the weekend's No. 5 spot.

Japan is its biggest market, throwing off $1.87 million from 326 spots, a mere 22% down from the prior weekend's figure. In 16 days, says Sony, "Salt" has nearly doubled the Japan market tally recorded by 2001's "Lara Croft: Tomb Raider" released by Paramount.

Tied at $9.2 million apiece on the weekend were Paramount's "The Last Airbender" and Sony's "Grown Ups." Director M. Night Shyamalan's 3D "Airbender" adaptation of the Nickelodeon TV series played 3,338 spots in 32 markets while "Grown Ups," the Sony comedy starring Adam Sandler, was booked at 2,467 screens in 37 markets. "Airbender's" foreign cume stands at $69 million while "Grown Ups" has grossed a total of $49.6 million overseas.

A first-place Norway bow helped Sony's "The Karate Kid" update costarring Jackie Chan and Jaden Smith shoot past the $100-million foreign gross mark (actual cume, $107 million). Weekend action came in at $8.2 million drawn from 2,420 situations in 35 markets. Two big markets, France and Russia, open this week.

Warner's family-oriented "Cats & Dogs: The Revenge of Kitty Galore" drew $7.8 million from some 4,000 screens in 29 markets, hoisting its overseas boxoffice cume to $22.3 million. A Japan opening is set for Aug. 21.

A No. 1 opening in Venezuela (an estimated $550,000 at 65 spots) plus first-place holdovers in Brazil and Mexico propelled "Despicable Me" to a $7.5 million weekend at 1,725 venues in a total of 25 territories. Foreign cume for Universal's family-oriented 3D animation voiced principally by Steve Carell stands at $56.2 million. A Poland bow is up for this week.

"Knight and Day" from 20th Century Fox is losing steam with a weekend tally $6.25 million drawn from 3,100 locations in 41 markets, moving the romantic action comedy's foreign cume to $139.3 million. Biggest market is France, where the Tom Cruise-Cameron Diaz vehicle has grossed $10.5 million so far.

DreamWorks Animation's "Shrek Forever After" in 3D is still playing internationally via Paramount, grossing $6 million on the weekend from 4,460 venues in 57 territories, and pushing its foreign gross total to $440.5 million. A China opening this week should boost the animation franchise's fourth installment's cume nicely.

Opening smartly in Germany (No. 3 in the market) and Austria (No. 2) was Fox's action outing "The A-Team," which collected $5.4 million on the weekend from 1,300 screens in 10 territories. Overseas gross total stands at $82.9 million.

Summit International's "The Twilight Saga: Eclipse" continues to chug along offshore, drawing an estimated $3.1 million on the weekend from 3,262 screens in 57 territories. Foreign gross total stands, says Summit, at $380.6 million.

Other international cumes: Fox's "Marmaduke," $32 million (thanks to a No. 1 Italy bow with $1.16 million drawn from 274 sites); Universal's "Nanny McPhee and the Big Bang," $62.6 million (after a $660,000 Korea bow at $163 locales); DreamWorks/Paramount's "How to Train Your Dragon," $270.5 million (of which $5.7 million came over two frames from Japan); Universal's "Get Him to the Greek," $22.5 million; Fox's "Predators," $61.7 million; and Universal's "Hanni und Nanni," $5.6 million from Germany and Austria only."

Correct me if I am wrong, but I thought they only included the grosses of the movies made by the big Hollywood studios overseas, and not local films...

see below;

Quote:
According to studio figures, the big six Hollywood majors -- 20 Century Fox, Disney, Warner Bros., Paramount, Universal and Sony -- have collected combined foreign boxoffice of $7.926 billion, 32% ahead of last year's January through July figure of $5.978 billion.
