 McCabe & Mrs. Miller McCabe & Mrs. Miller Quote: McCabe & Mrs. Miller is a 1971 American Western film starring Warren Beatty and Julie Christie, and directed by Robert Altman.
One of Altman's naturalist films, the director called it an "anti-western film" because the film ignores or subverts a number of Western conventions.
The screenplay is by Altman and Brian McKay from the novel of the same name by Edmund Naughton. The cinematography is by Vilmos Zsigmond and the soundtrack includes three songs by Leonard Cohen issued on his 1967 album Songs of Leonard Cohen.
Julie Christie was nominated for an Academy Award for Best Actress for her role. Roger Ebert, a leading critic, has called the film "perfect."
In June 2008, the American Film Institute revealed its AFI's 10 Top 10—the best ten films in ten "classic" American film genres—after polling over 1,500 people from the creative community. McCabe & Mrs. Miller was acknowledged as the eighth best film in the western genre.

Re: McCabe & Mrs. Miller Not my favorite Altman but still better than most anything else. Altman being Altman the film does break away from convention and shows the evolution of the genre.

Re: McCabe & Mrs. Miller Speaking about a genre that hasn't really evolved much since its inception, the anticipation for True Grit is killing me. I am going to watch the original soon even though I heard it isn't very good at all. I am dying to see what the Coen bros. have done with the genre. Considering the Western traits shown in No Country for Old Men and what an absolute marvel of a movie A Serious Man is, I'd say these guys are at the top of their game and my expectations for this movie are high. They are going to have to create a whole new reality for the Wetern as a genre and take a step above what Altman did with McCabe and Mrs. Miller.
