 Re: Friday Numbers (July 16)
$21M is a solid number for Inception, but as I have said a million times before I would not be suprised by a slight decrease today. As for DM it held up really well, but it's likely not going to go far past $200M if it gets there. As for the the rest of the holdovers nothing too special, but that drop for Predators is AWFUL. It's now VERY likely it will go under $50M and $60M is deffentially out of the question.

 Re: Friday Numbers (July 16)
Also I just realized K&D will only finish with around $75M domestic. That's pretty bad considering the budget and marketing. Too bad because the movie was actually decent. I say the same for A-Team aswell.

Releasing Predators days before Inception reminds me of when Universal released Hellboy II: The Golden Army right before The Dark Knight.

They complain all the time that studio made crap film and when they actually do make a decent film the numbers aren't good. So fuck u fans. You deserve shit.

Um, why would it increase today? Even Despicable Me decreased on Saturday, and that didn't have 3m midnights.

 Re: Friday Numbers (July 16)
My friend's brother also said that Inception was "okay," and this is usually indicating an 8x overall multiplier. Shack's $500m thread is very much in play based on this information.

 Re: Friday Numbers (July 16)
I'm really doubting the "great legs" excuse. 60m is not bad, and considering tracking better than I expected, however this is not avatar. It is may have some similar cool cgi and action, however it is focused on a mind-bending complex plotline that many may find confusing and not enjoyable. Avatar was just dumb enough to connect with everyone but had "revolutionary" visuals and 3D so that critics enjoyed it too. It was a perfect storm. I'm not convinced Inception will find that sort of WOM and become a sensation. It should be good for 220m or so, which isn't bad but not what I was hoping for.

That is not an excuse, it is a prediction. An opening around $60M for this type of movie is a certified success, not something that needs to be excused. And considering what you just said in this post ("a mind-bending complex plotline that many may find confusing and not enjoyable"), $220M would be EXCELLENT, more than just "not bad." The movie is very intricate and demands that people pay attention.

 Re: Friday Numbers (July 16)
Also, I wanted to add what I think might be becoming a misconception from those who haven't seen Inception:
The movie is NOT confusing, assuming you actually pay attention and don't text half the film. Everything makes perfect sense, it just expects the viewer to be on their toes. The people who seem to think average Americans won't accept the film are being kind of elitist, imo.

 Re: Friday Numbers (July 16)
CYRUS didn't expand well at all . I would have thought adding more than double the theaters it would be able to increase a bit from last weekend, but it's actually going to drop. The expansion will clearly stop here. Of course a lot of people were probably like, "Why see CYRUS when we can see INCEPTION?" Well NOT me!

Then why are some people disappointed? Also, one should not forget that it boasts a combined production and marketing budget of over $260m, the studio is surely expecting a blockbuster return. Plus it doesn't lend itself well to merchandising tie-ins, like toys, so no revenue there. The movie is walking a fine line at the moment, depending on its legs it could go either way, success or disappointment.

 Re: Friday Numbers (July 16)
Once again, I'm perplexed as to how some can't grasp the concept that an opening can be disappointing relative to expectations and budget (and I would surely argue those expectations were not unfounded or foolhardy) but still good financially. It's the same idea behind Toy Story 3 and Iron Man 2 being disappointing.
The legs are something we can't judge right now. It could sprout a POTC style 6.0 multi, it could go up today, but we can't say for sure. All we have to judge it on now is it's opening day, which to me is disappointing.
