Remarkable for Knight And Day. It actually beat Prince Of Persia's admission numbers by a few thousand. After a disappointing Friday, TLIB: Ip Man came back strong with a 142% increase. Excellent hold for Break Up Club. Solid number for Ocean Heaven. Iffy drop for The A-Team.

Nice increases for both Knight And Day and TLIB: Ip Man. Still good for Break Up Club. Very nice for Ocean Heaven. Bad for The A-Team.

Moved: Inception

Inception is the big story here. Moving up to face off against a beloved franchise wouldn't be one might expect but with Aftershock taking one of the IMAX screens (and with the possibility of taking 2), the threat is minimalized now that Inception has moved up a week. This will allow Inception to play in IMAX for one week in two IMAX theaters and more if it performs well in the bigger IMAX theatre. There is one small problem though...Shrek 4 has already booked both IMAX screens on July 1. Depending on how it does on the bigger IMAX screen, Inception may lose out on IMAX altogether. Now onto the regular battle, Inception is a newcomer going up against a popular animated sequel. If ticket sales for Toy Story and Toy Story 2 were any indication, Inception will have an uphill battle to climb if it wants to snatch #1 away from Toy Story 3.

I think this is a terrible move for all of the big 3 (Toy Story 3, Inception and Aftershock). The only one who will benefit may possibly be Salt. First of all, having Inception the same weekend as Toy Story 3 hurts each other and the dueling for IMAX screens between Inception and Aftershock will dilute whatever advantage that Inception may have had moving up. Also, since Toy Story 3 and Inception are coming out the same week, audiences who will watch both may decide to catch the other movie they didn't watch the second weekend leaving Aftershock and Salt out. However, if Inception turns out to be as good as advertised, Salt may be the one left out.

Other highlights - release dates:

The Karate Kid - August 5
The Sorcerer's Apprentice - August 5 (new)
Step Up - August 6
Street Dance - August 20

Who schedules these? I swear...some of the scheduling is ridiculous. Avatar vs. The Karate Kid vs. The Sorcerer's Apprentice should be interesting to watch though. Also, Step Up vs. Street Dance will be another nice battle as both are vying for people's attention with the added bonus of them being in 3D.

Notes:

Toy Story 3 tickets for IMAX can now be bought in advance. So far pre-sales have been excellent. It has been selling a lot more tickets than Shrek 4 did in its first 4 or 5 days. The only problem is that both Chinese and English versions have been selling tickets fast so the bigger IMAX theater owner will have a tough time dividing the showtimes for each version especially with Aftershock and Inception on the horizon.

Shrek 4: Forever After tickets are now available for pre-order. Curiously, the only theaters that have not made pre-ordering available for opening day are the 2 most expensive theaters.

Shrek: Forever After takes over for Avatar on the 4D screen starting July 1. Kind of pathetic when the most popular movie only gets cut when there are several new and highly anticipated releases coming out (or because of July).

Notes:

Eclipse is having a robust Wednesday. I think it could get 40,000...possibly 50,000 admissions. Since Thursday night is a holiday, Wednesday night sales will be stronger than usual and play out like a Friday night. It is tough to say what it will get but I think it could get $900,000 for 5-day.

Shrek: Forever After is looking very strong so far for opening day. I think it is looking closer to 60,000-70,000 admissions just for Thursday. IMAX showings haven't sold out or is even close to selling out but it has been doing good business. I think a gross of $1.6m is achievable with the holiday and Saturday acting as buffers.

Inception has been released for advance ordering in IMAX. IMAX schedule looks like this for the month of July:

Shrek - both IMAX screens (July 1)
Toy Story 3 - both IMAX screens (July 15)
Aftershock - 1 IMAX screen (July 22)
Inception - 1 IMAX screen (July 29)

It's somewhat interesting that both the animated films got both IMAX screens and yet the non-animated movies got only 1. I think for the first time ever, the IMAX screens here will have to share the screen to compensate for high demand.

Big surprise here is Ocean Heaven surviving with many showtimes or even premiering in some new places. I thought Knight & Day would have gotten them but sometimes admission numbers don't match what theaters will schedule.

Very good for Eclipse. Even better for Shrek 4.

Can you post the box office results (opening and total if possible) in HK for the previous Twilight and Shrek films?

2Knight And Day--3186----
3Ocean Heaven--1806----
4The Legend Is Born: Ip Man--1401----
5Triple Tap--1366----

This number is better than what Ip Man 2 got opening day, however, Ip Man did not have a holiday the next day to inflate admission totals. That number is still amazing though. 25,000+ on pre-sales alone. WOW. The summer season has just begun.

With this new development, I'm going to up my Eclipse 5-day prediction to $1.2m. It'll be interesting to see Shrek's #s tomorrow and how much Eclipse will fall. Tomorrow is a holiday so it will fall lightly instead of the harsh drops people are accustomed to seeing from this franchise.

As for the rest, Knight And Day got hit hard by Eclipse. Ocean Heaven did great and I guess theater owners were right in keeping this over Knight And Day. TLIB: Ip Man also took a hit and Triple Tap didn't do much with its nighttime sneak previews.

Twilight - $423,123/$2,213,774 (#18 highest grossing movie of 2008)
Twilight 2: New Moon - $769,125/$1,897,556 (#23 of 2009)

Shrek - unavailable
Shrek 2 - $1,041,285/$2,035,432
Shrek The Third - $1,049,526/$2,757,750

(all in USD)

Shrek the Third actually increased from the second movie. New Moon suffered due to competition from Avatar.

Eclipse should be able to get $1.2m OW while I expect a big increase in OW for Shrek 4 because of the holiday + competition later on (Toy Story 3 in two weeks + other blockbusters released the following weeks).

Wednesday adm.June 30

So Eclipse comes in just below Ip Man 2's opening day (47,608). That should translate to about $350,000 USD. I still think it will peter out a bit but Thursday's # should be near or just below Wednesday's #. It looks like people are not taking Friday off (to make it an extra long weekend) so it should suffer quite a bit before rebounding on the weekend. Knight And Day collapsed against Eclipse. Ok for Triple Tap but TLIB: Ip Man got its life sucked out by Eclipse too. Fantastic number for Ocean Heaven.

Shrek's # is missing. Good hold for Eclipse. Meh for Triple Tap. Knight & Day has eroded. Somewhat disappointing for Ocean Heaven considering that more theaters picked it up and started showing it today. Terrible for TLIB: Ip Man although it is due to its showtimes getting cut.

Now updated with Shrek's #s. Altogether, Shrek is very close to 50,000 admissions (49,634). I don't know how much further Shrek can go but 70,000-80,000 looks likely.

26 N Yao tiao shen shi (My Fair Gentleman) n/a $135 - 1 - $135 $135 1

Excellent for Knight And Day. To beat Prince of Persia with no IMAX screens or inflated prices is quite a feat.

The Legend Is Born: Ip Man managed to draw people in with the Ip Man premise although most people that watched the original Ip Man movies (with Donnie Yen) ignored this one for the most part.

Great hold by Break Up Club. While everything else managed to drop over 50%, it remained steady. WOM is good for this one.

The A-Team fell harshly with Knight & Day debuting but it's been a success here.

Ocean Heaven opened to good results and its weekend gross should be better next week with the addition of more screens and holiday inflation.

Sex And The City 2 had another big drop. It should finish with around 70% of the predecessor's gross.

Ex was ignored in favor of Break Up Club this week.

Chloe opened to decent numbers and was helped by its category III rating.

Exam and Prince Of Persia both fell sharply with their screens being given to the new openers thsi week.

Killer Bride's Perfect Crime and Bad Lieutenant: Port of Call New Orleans opened to terrible results.

Nodame Cantabile: Part 2 passes $600,000.

Michael Jackson's This Is It increased due to more people deciding to watch it in IMAX before Shrek takes its screens away.

Notes:

Advanced ticketing for Toy Story 3 is now available in both 4D and regular theaters. 4D presales is looking good. Same with regular theatres although a couple of places are lagging behind.

Shrek to finish 4D and IMAX on July 14. Toy Story will take over both on July 15.

Excellent start for Shrek: Forever After. Less than a 10% drop for Eclipse. Pretty good numbers so far. Good for Triple Tap and understandably poor for Knight & Day.

Admissions have dropped off considerably from the holiday. Eclipse is a night-driven film so it should be able to do better than Shrek in its internal multiplier. Triple Tap's number seems poor to me and that drop is hideous for Knight & Day.

I really like how admissions for each version are available.

Interesting how every movie increased across the board.

Eclipse's 5-day total - $1.21m (estimate)
Shrek: Forever After's 4-day total - $1.7m (estimate)

These are estimates that I made up using the data collected from Ip Man 2. To account for Shrek's higher ticket prices, I multiplied all dollar figures by 25%.

Post Re: HK: Battle of the Sexes: SatC 2 Edges A-TEAM in Opening
July 29 - Inception vs. Holdovers

The Last Airbender has moved to August 12 so it looks like Inception will handily win the weekend. Still, there are some factors that will hinder Inception's performance overall.

In my previous analysis, I stated that Aftershock's success is the key to how Inception performs. With The Last Airbender moving, Inception won't be affected as much now with more screens available for the taking. The point still stands though. If Aftershock is as good as they say it is and the reactions it's been getting online, how will Inception rise up to the challenge?

Reviews for Inception have been very positive so far but the movies coming out during the three weeks starting from the middle of July are all heavy hitters. Will viewers continue to shell out cash or will they suffer from fatigue and ignore this movie and wait till it's out on DVD?

Screen counts are also a big concern. The business districts will be saturated with Toy Story 3, Aftershock and Salt all playing. Toy Story 3 should still command very high demand with at least 2 screens. If the word on Aftershock is very good, it could also take away another 2 screens leaving 1 or 2 other screens for Salt/Inception. Even in the non-business districts, Aftershock should play even stronger there along with Toy Story 3 leftovers and theater owners there won't be as willing to give up screens like in the business counterparts. Still, The Last Airbender moving can only be good news for it as it will not have to compete for another Western title for screens.

Another factor to consider is IMAX. Inception has gotten the bigger IMAX screen but it could be sharing the screen with Toy Story 3 on the weekends since only 1 showing has been posted so far.

With all these points to consider, anticipation for this movie is very high and reviews have been exceptional. It will have to contend with the holdovers so OW will be deflated because of it. Looking at the future, it has The Karate Kid and The Sorcerer's Apprentice the week after so it'll have its work cut for it. At this point, I'm tentatively going to say it will open with $800,000 OW because of the sheer competition that it has. I think the total will be much better and it should be able to garner great legs possibly even getting a 5x multiplier depending on how low it opens.

Prediction:

Who will claim #1 this weekend? - Aftershock
Inception OW - $800,000 (although it could go over $1m)
Inception total - $3m

5Shrek: Forever After (3D English)172113938-77.1%

Surprising for Predators. I didn't expect it would open with that many admissions. La Comédie Humaine played like any standard Hong Kong flick. As for the holdovers, the drops don't tell us anything since last Thursday was a holiday. Eclipse having a better hold than Shrek is because Shrek opened on the holiday while Eclipse was cushioned with its Wednesday opening.

5La Comédie Humaine--2033--

Typical performance for Predators. Good hold by Shrek. Eclipse had a terrible hold considering last Friday was deflated. Meh for La Comédie Humaine.

Notes:

- 200 lucky Hong Kong Disneyland Annual Pass Holders won the opportunity to see Toy Story 3 in special screenings this weekend. The special screenings are divided into the dubbed and original English version with half going to one or the other.

Better than expected hold for Predators. Very good drop for Shrek. Iffy drop for Eclipse. Even though it is a frondloaded franchise, the lack of competition should have helped it get under a 50% drop. Ordinary for La Comédie Humaine.

And do you know what happened to, ihope?

OW2nd weekend
Shrek 3$1,049,526$576,981
Shrek 4$1,555,601$777,800.50
% change from Shrek 3+48.2%+34.8%

Shrek 4 is ahead of Shrek 3 on opening weekend and if it falls 50% with the holiday taken into account, it will still be ahead of Shrek 3 in its second weekend. That second weekend figure for Shrek 4 is just my estimate given the trends for Shrek 4 so far. Shrek 4 will definitely pass Shrek 3's total. It is just a matter of how much. Toy Story 3 will affect it a lot but scrounging up a few hundred thousand with big competition is not impossible.

I don't know what happened to ihope.

Weekend of July 1-4, 2010:

1 N Shrek Forever After Intercontinental $1,555,601 - 64 - $24,306 $1,555,601 1
2 N The Twilight Saga: Eclipse Golden Scene $815,355 - 55 - $14,825 $1,069,819 1
3 1 Knight & Day Fox $285,114 -62.9% 39 -21 $7,311 $1,328,067 2
4 2 The Legend Is Born: Ip Man Newport $154,021 -61.2% 27 -8 $5,704 $713,788 2
5 5 Ocean Heaven EDKO $75,222 -22.8% 12 - $6,269 $227,328 2
6 3 Fun sau suet oi nei (Breakup Club) Gala $58,633 -80.9% 12 -19 $4,886 $1,208,300 3
7 8 Chloe Golden Scene $10,439 -64.0% 4 -1 $2,610 $52,264 2
8 6 Sex and the City 2 WB $6,281 -93.2% 2 -22 $3,141 $1,365,033 4
9 4 The A-Team Fox $6,213 -94.7% 3 -31 $2,071 $1,478,346 4
10 9 Exam Lark $4,670 -81.3% 1 -9 $4,670 $151,418 3

Excellent for Shrek and Eclipse. The rest of the top 10 with the exception of Ocean Heaven suffered huge declines because of the new releases. Ocean Heaven increased screens this week. I don't know why it is not reflected in its screen count but that is a good hold for it.

Fantastic number for Predators. I didn't expect this to win Saturday at all! It is bucking the trend of a typical frontloaded movie. Very good drop for Shrek 4. Not a great hold for Eclipse. At least it will pass New Moon's number. It may even pass Twilight's number. Nice bounce for Humaine.

After this weekend, Shrek 4 should be near $2.5m depending on the weekdays. It might not have enough juice to get it past $3m with Toy Story 3 on the horizon. Very good increase for it from Saturday though. Yikes for Eclipse and good bump for La Comédie Humaine.

Excellent for Predators. It should be able to muster over $800,000 with these admission numbers. Still very good for Shrek 4. Decent for Humaine. Eclipse is running out of gas.

Shrek 4 admissions:

Opening weekend - 188,600
2nd weekend - 96,200 (-49.0%)

Using last week's Shrek multiplier, I get a $790,615 figure for Shrek 4's second weekend.

Eclipse admissions:

Opening weekend - 122,157 (4-day)
2nd weekend - 46,338 (-62.1%)

Using last week's Eclipse multiplier, I get a $309,290 figure for Eclipse's second weekend.

The week ahead:

Toy Story 3 is set to storm multiplexes and bring in boatloads of cash in. With all the pre-sales going in, it looks like 40,000-50,000 admissions is achievable for opening day. I wouldn't put it past it if Toy Story 3 manages to score 60,000 admissions although it will be very difficult. Opening day morning shows are about 70-95% full but weaker middays won't lead to a huge opening day. Weekend admissions will be much stronger. IMAX is doing brisk business as well.

But the Predators number is below AVP and AVP2 OW. Both of them did total 1.4 and 1.9 million respectively in Hong Kong.

This one might not do more than 1-1.2 million

When you think of the competition it has just in terms of screens, it wasn't going to open as big as the other two films. Shrek 4 and Eclipse are dominating the screens right now. AvP: Requiem and AvP had no competition.

LOL. This one will make $1m before Toy Story 3 opens. It won't fall off the face of this planet. Instead, it will probably finish with around $1.4-$1.6m. This is a good number in terms of how much competition it faced for screens.
