Biggest opening weekend in August: Expendables or Other Guys
The Expendables might not become $100+ million huge and all, but we all know that it is going to be quite frontloaded and thus make a big bulk of its money in its first weekend.
The Other Guys, on the other hand, is looking to clearly become the winner of the next month, but I am not sure how huge its opening will be.
The Other Guys clearly seems to have the upper hand in this and it is the one I would pick. It can manage a $50+ million opening, whereas I see The Expendables falling in the $30-40 million range. However it could surprise with its frontloading as it is basically the Freddy Vs. Jason of the action genre and that opened to $36+ million back in 2003!

Definitely The Other Guys. I think $50m is definitely possible.

Re: Biggest opening weekend in August: Expendables or Other Guys
I've seen a decent amount of marketing for The Other Guys. It could use a lot more, but I think it'll pick up really soon. Having the trailer with Inception would be gold.
My problem with The Expendables, despite the fact that it's gonna be AWESOME, is that I don't like all the marketing I'm seeing. Like the trailer was okay. The commercials are okay. None of it seems really bad ass.

I think that'll get it like 30/65. Which is still terrific. I just think it needs to be more cooler for it to open higher than $35m (not much of a stretch from what I'm predicting, I know, but I'm comparing it to District 9 and Inglourious Basterd's openings last year).

The Other Guys.
The Expendables marketing is crap. And the action looks meh and generic.

Despite the cast I don't see a movie of this type to beat Live Free or Die Hard, a very successful franchise that came back with a sequel after 12 years to surprisingly very good reviews and crowd reactions.

Other Guys, easily. I know it will end up bigger, but I'm still not that confident it's breaking 50m+ OW when Date Night (which had two major comedy stars) barely made 25m OW.
Maybe Expendables could underwhlem like A-Team and not get to 55m.

Re: Biggest opening weekend in August: Expendables or Other Guys
Obviously TOTG will win opening weekend and domestic, but I think it's seriously being overpredicted. Yes it's the next big comedy of the summer and I understand it has that prime Talladega Nights slot, but I don't see this movie having nearly as much appeal as that one. Still it should easily be a lock for $30M+ OW and over 100M domestic. TE on the otherhand should also do really well OW, but will be very frontloaded.
: My Predicitions: The Expendables - $27M OW/ $67M DOM The Other Guys - $33M OW/ $114M DOM

The Expendables by a landslide. Will Ferrell is a has-been.

Re: Biggest opening weekend in August: Expendables or Other Guys
40M is deffentially possible, but 50M is kind of a stretch if you ask me. That would be in Rush Hour territory and this movie won't nearly have as much crossover appeal as those movies. The combonation of Ferrel and Whalberg just doesn't strike me as being that huge eventhough Whalberg is a solid draw. Plus lets not forget after bombs like Semi Pro and Land Of The Lost which were also overpredicted Ferrel might have lost quite a bit of his appeal since Talladega.

Re: Biggest opening weekend in August: Expendables or Other Guys
I'd say The Other Guys is looking at $35-40 million. There's a solid chance for The Expendables to beat that.

Re: Biggest opening weekend in August: Expendables or Other Guys
I'm still going with The Other Guys. Sure TE could still end up beating it, but it will need a huge opening day around the $18 - $20M range and while that's possible I'm not too sure about it happening. I'm seeing it getting a VERY close weekend multiplier to the Saw movies which means a big opening day, but then a huge crash the next.

Re: Biggest opening weekend in August: Expendables or Other Guys
I'm feeling a 25 opening day for Expendables so Expendables. I think I have a group myself of 15 seeing it, that hasn't happened since Reloaded.

Expendables - $45 million. I think it could even clear $50 million.
