My opinion only! This was difficult. In some years there were more than one film that really deserved it, and in others I had trouble even coming up with one I thought was worthy.

Thanks! I'm particularly glad to see you agree with my Edward Scissorhands suggestion.
The only years I'm a bit iffy on are 2000 and 1999. 1999 because it was such a stellar year in terms of films (the final choice was between Ripley and The Iron Giant), and 2000 because it was so bobbins comparatively speaking (the final choice was between Almost Famous and Requiem for a Dream).

Why not? Toy Story was perfect. Just because it was animated doesn't mean it wasn't the best picture of the year.

I'm sure there were better films released in 1993 than the Piano (I had a bit of trouble finding a full list), but of the nominees for BP that year The Piano was easily the best film.
