Re: Worldwide Top 10 of 2010 Predictions Thread
Here's my predicted/projected Top 10:
1. Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows: Part I - $1.120 billion
The Harry Potter franchise has been on a constant rise domestically ever since the fourth film. Harry Potter and the Half-Blood Prince became the first Harry Potter movie since the first one to break $300 million in North America. This time, however, the bump will be way bigger due to the 3D factor and the fact that we're entering the final chapter of the series. Also, I still think that the franchise is best left in the holiday season - it will rule November/December this year. Overseas it has been pretty stable with the last entries all making around $600-650 million. Add the 3D bonus and you'll get an easy $700+ million OS grosser. So, yes, I expect it to become the 3rd-biggest movie ever worldwide.
2. Alice in Wonderland - $1.050 billion
The movie is just a phenomenon, 3D or not! It has finished its run in most territories, but in Brazil, Japan and Spain it is still doing terrific numbers, so that it'll easily pass $1 billion and has an outside shot at passing Dead Man Chest's worldwide total.
3. Toy Story 3 - $980 million
Up was the first Pixar 3D movie ad it made $438 million overseas. Pixar's most successful effort overseas to date is Finding Nemo with a $528 million total. Now Toy Story 2 made "only" $239 million back in 1999 and $485 million worldwide. However, Pixar has garnered A LOT of goodwill since then, including numerous Oscar wins for Best Animated Picture and the second ever nomination as Best Picture for an animated film (for last year's Up). Their films are beloved and if early word from Vega sis to be believed Toy Story 3 is as brilliant as most of their work. That means we're in for a huge performance domestically and a tremendous increase over the predecessor overseas (it could double its number).
4. Shrek Forever After - $835 million
Shrek the Third decreased a lot from Shrek 2 domestically, but barely so overseas. Shrek 2 finished with $919.8 million WW and Shrek the Third with $799 million. Shrek the Third's WoM hasn't ben very good as showcased by its legs and its DVD sales. However, the sequel's marketing is very strong. What will also help it immensly overseas is that it'll be the first 3D movie after a long long time since it is not released until July in most of Europe (because of the World Cup). The audiences won't have seen any big 3D movies since Clash of the Titans by the time Shrek Forever After arrives.
5. Iron Man 2 - $750 million
I expect a healthy increase over the original's $585 million and so far it is looking to happen.
6. The Twilight Saga: Eclipse - $725 million
New Moon made around $710 million, so I expect something similar here again.
7. Inception - $560 million
Being not a sequel or a remake or the adaptation of some popular material, it'll be a rather tough sell, but The Dark Knight had terrific WoM not just in the USA, so I expect it to do well overseas despite the complex subject matter. It won't make much more OS than domestically, though
8. The Chronicles of Narnia: The Voyage of the Dawn Treader - $520 million
The second film made $420 million worldwide, while the first one did $745 million. I don't think this would have broken $500 million WW without 3D, but now that it has been announced to go the three-dimensional route as well, it should see a good increase over the predecessor. I still, however, don't see it getting close to the first film's number (since the first one was also based on the by far more popular book).
9. Prince of Persia: The Sands of Time - $515 million
It'll suffer under the effect of the World Cup, but on the other hand it won't have much direct competition movie-wise. It's just the kind of a movie that international audiences usually eat up, so I think the turnout will be quite big.
10. Little Fockers/How to Train Your Dragon - $470 million
I couldn't decide between the two. I still think Fockers will decrease a bit from the second film, but it'll outgross the original by quite a bit. How to Train Your Dragon is still doing well and has South Korea, Japan and China ahead.
Other movies I see making $400+ million worldwide:
Clash of the Titans (d'uh) Knight and Day Sex and the City 2
The Last Airbender, Tangled, Robin Hood and A-Team also have a shot, I suppose.

I can't believe Alice in Wonderland will end up #2.
No, I really hope other movies beat it, but hell, how will they?

Re: Worldwide Top 10 of 2010 Predictions Thread
Yes, I could defintely see the Narnia franchise getting back on track with Dawn Treader. It's a more marketable, distinctive story than the generic-ness that Prince Caspian looked like (and was), it's got 3D and a return to the Christmas release date. Hopefully we get to see Silver Chair.

Re: Worldwide Top 10 of 2010 Predictions Thread
I agree with your placings Dr. Lecter, though have slightly different grosses. Also I think Inception will do better than you think. Well let's hope so anyway. I'm being cautious with that movie in particular because it could go both ways.
1) Harry Potter 7: DH Part 1 - $350m + $780m = $1.13bn 2) Alice In Wonderland - $335m + $720m = $1.055bn 3) Toy Story 3 - $430m + $520m = $950m 4) Shrek 4 - $290m + $510m = $800m 5) Iron Man 2 - $405m + $310m = $715m 6) The Twilight Saga: Eclipse - $300m + $400m = $700m 7) Inception - $280m + $350m = $630m 8) Narnia 3 - $220m + $390m = $610m 9) Prince Of Persia - $180m + $310m = $490m 10) Little Fockers - $210m + $240m = $450m

Not sure at all with Tron and Inception though.

It's still weird to see Alice on top by more than doubling the #2 movie.

Re: Worldwide Top 10 of 2010 Predictions Thread
I'd say that is the boon of being a world known story and of course 3D. Clash in 3D did not go that well.
Also the fact that 3 of the Top 5 movies were 3D movies just indicates what is going to be the future.
Add to the fact that other movies that might change this list are HP7, Shrek 4 and Toy Story 3 and guess what they are in 3D too. Which means we probably will have 4 of the Top 5 movies with 3D asterisk beside their name.
This with the fact that we have not even considered Avatar for this year's list which in turn would have made more than any of these movies this year even without a re-release and from what I remember it would have doubled Alice in WW total for this year so far and god knows what it might do with the re-release though I do not have real high hopes for it then

Re: Worldwide Top 10 of 2010 Predictions Thread
With six more contenders to come
Narnia Inception Eclipse Shrek Forever After Toy Story 3 Harry Potter and the Deathly Hollows - I
I think Clash can round up the Top 10 but then there is a chance that there is a surprise (like Tron Legacy or some animation movie for example) may cross that mark as well if they do better than Clash domestically.

Excellent for TS3 though IM2 is the bar after which it should stop. Eclipse should be #4 by this weekend and will definitely cross IM2 is WW gross. It has a good shot to beat IM2 both domestically and OS as well now. With Shrek4 not doing as great this has a very good shot at #4 of the year in WW total
