Hmm, all movies pale compared to Avatar. Looks like it wasn't just the 3D effect as Alice and Clash both won't even pass $40 million it seems.

Very nice start for Ip Man 2. It almost made its predecessor's total in one weekend. It will get hit hard by Iron Man 2 but it should stabilize quickly after the upfront demand for Iron Man 2 is gone.

Ip Man 2 started on Tuesday, so the number was for the first 6 days.

Avatar is a big outlier. All other films are still basically performing to expectation. Only four films last year broke the $40m mark last year after all.

Nice hold by Iron Man 2 in China for the week. That number (167.1M) for Clash is also good.

I wonder why Ip Man 2 fell so harshly when it only dropped 26% last week when Iron Man 2 opened.

Loss of showings? The number of showings for Ip Man 2 dropped from 47734 to 28979 week-to-week.



The hold for Iron Man 2 was actually not that good. Like xiayun said in his blog, its week one had only 3 days while week two had 7 days. It would be a 50% drop if you compared the weekends only.

Since it opened on Friday, Iron Man 2 only affected three days of Ip Man 2's second week in term of taking screens away, but affected the whole week this time. Also people had May 3rd off for May Day holiday, so the drops last week became more severe.

That's kinda weak for Dragon, no?

Yeah, it's relatively weak, but animated films don't exactly perform well in China, especially when they have a lengthy delay like this. The legs should be good.

In HK, it comes out on July 22nd (same weekend as Inception, Salt, and 2nd weekend of Toy Story 3) and will be shown on IMAX (the first Chinese movie to do so).

How to Train Your Dragon is having quite solid legs. Maybe $15+ million will happen afterall.
