Post Re: The 3D thread
This was posted in the theater count thread, but it's probably worth posting here as well - a comprehensive 3D schedule.

Considering the amount of 3D screens currently available (4,300 and counting), the schedule for the rest of the year looks pretty well spread out, with a new release every 3-5 weeks...until the fall. There are seven releases planned over nine weeks, starting with Legend of the Guardians and going all the way to HP7. THEN the following month we officially have our first head-to-head 3D battle with Yogi Bear and Tron: Legacy, and four weeks later at MLK weekend we have THREE 3D movies going head-to-head-to-head. That's a bit...insane.

I'm pretty sure that by the time next year starts, there'll be 50+ 3D releases scheduled for it.

There's no live-action 3D film in the summer? WB should've released Clash of the Titans as a summer tentpole, it would probably get most of the 3D screens including maybe IMAX, plus it would've been a couple months since Alice in Wonderland so there will be more demand for another live action 3D film. Guarantee it would make a lot more money that way, plus they would have more time to make the 3D effects better.

Does anyone think that theaters will eventually cut-out non-3d showings for 3d films?

Smaller theatres (that have maybe only 4-6 screens) already do. They only show the 3D product.

Well, Step Up 3D and Cats & Dogs 2 is kinda live action too.

Sony Pushes Back 'Green Hornet' Release
Green Hornet is moving its release date from December 22nd to Martin Luther King Weekend, which is January 14, 2011 so it can be converted into 3D. (Sony is using the term "enhanced".)

Green Hornet reaks of being a major bomb. 3D will enhance its stink.

The Last Airbender is getting converted into 3D too: http://www.deadline.com/2010/04/airbender-goes-3d/. This is getting out of control.

The Green Hornet, at best, will do $75m or so even with 3D ticket prices.

As for Avatar, I'd prefer it not to be "converted". If it was filmed in 3D, for the purpose of 3D, fine, but the conversion is such an annoying way for studios to gain more money. It's making the experience feel, well, not like an experience at all anymore.

I still won't see it in theaters until I see someone smile in the trailers though.

unlike COTT this isn't a last minute conversion. They have been working on 3D for the past 2 months and they still have time. 6 months is enough for getting a good conversion BUT it depends on the actual movie. If your movie has a lot of CGI then u can definitely enhance them with 3D.

COTT had so much practical effects and the way it was shot simply wasn't fit for 3d cnversion. On top of that you give 3D studios only 2 months to convert, ofcourse you will get shitty results.

Meh. I really liked the look and the feeling of new Sherlock in 2D.

Is there actually ANY major blockbuster scheduled for next year that is not coming in 3D?

I mean Thor and Captain America are not confirmed yet for 3D, but who knows...

Fast Five, Mission Impossible, Transformers, and Cowboys & Aliens are all unconfirmed for 3D.

Transformers is almost certain to be in 3D. The other three I'm not quite so sure.

Hmm, I was quite certain Cowboys & Aliens will be in 3D...

So 3D will be the standard by next year. The way sheep seem to be embracing it means that its here to stay longer than it has in the past? Or will the bottom fall out?

As much as I dislike 3D, ive only seen films that were decent or good (visually) in 3D - Avatar, How to Train, Beowulf, Monster House - but how long before it becomes a major chore and irritation to watch every bloody film in 3D with those ridiculous and uncomfortable glasses which make you feel your in an amusement park and takes away from the cinema experience. The novelty has already worn off.

The argument people will always have is that the choice for 2D exists so you don't need to watch it in 3D.

Here's my issue with that: If 3D keeps expanding, there will end up being situations where your local theater will only be showing the film you want in 3D. You won't even have a chance to watch it in 2D

And perhaps my biggest issue with 3D is that it is going to change the actual screenplay of films. Screenwriters will now write in many "3D effects" into their scripts, not because it actually makes sense, but because it lets them sell the movie in 3D. If scripts started to get affected, then the films themselves, 2D or 3D, get affected. Movies are going to become more gimmicky and even less authentic (which is already at a low bar).

Thats true. Scenes built essentially for 3D only will certainly add more of a gimmick feel. It doesnt matter so much for kids/animated films - but is a worrying trend that every big film will be in 3D. Thank God we have the smaller indie/foreign/end of year type films in 2D.

What is also worrying is that now the studios have the backing (and indirectly funding) of the big electronics giants as they unleash "3D home tv/cinema" as they need more product available to make the 3D TVs viable. Looks like this will go on for some time.

Not really. In fact, I think more and more people have jumped on the anti-3D wagon in the past few months.

Its a novelty. It came and went before as well.

Nazgul - In my previous post I did not hide the fact that Ive been vocal about not liking the 3D trend. I did however present a balanced view in that my 3D experience so far hasn't been all that bad.

I'll try not be a downer on this 3D thread as people want to discuss what is coming out in 3D. But thats my view.
