 Das Boot
Das Boot Quote: Das Boot ("The Boat"; German pronunciation: [das boːt]) is a 1981 feature film directed by Wolfgang Petersen, adapted from a novel of the same name by Lothar-Günther Buchheim. Hans-Joachim Krug, former first officer on U-219, served as a consultant, as did Heinrich Lehmann-Willenbrock, the captain of the real U-96.
The film is the story of a single patrol of one World War II U-boat, U-96, and its crew. It depicts both the excitement of battle and the tedium of the fruitless hunt, and shows the men serving aboard U-boats as ordinary individuals with a desire to do their best for their comrades and their country. The story is based on an amalgamation of the exploits of the real U-96, a Type VIIC-class U-boat commanded by Heinrich Lehmann-Willenbrock, one of Germany's top U-boat "tonnage aces" during the war.
One of Petersen's goals was to guide the audience through "a journey to the edge of the mind" (the film's German tagline Eine Reise ans Ende des Verstandes), showing "what war is all about."
The original 1981 version cost DM 32 million to make. The director's meticulous attention to detail resulted in a historically accurate film that was a critical and financial success, grossing over $80 million ($190.2 million in 2009 prices) worldwide between its two releases in 1981 and 1997. Its high production cost ranks it among the most expensive films in the history of German cinema. It was the second most expensive up until that time, after Metropolis.

 Re: Das Boot
The miniseries version is some of the most engrossing suspense ever created.

 Re: Das Boot
There's no denying Peterson's brilliance with the haunting psychological warfare in the sub, the attack sequences have to be some of the most harrowizing I've seen in a movie, using the waiting for hell game to perfection, and the general claustrophobia of the sub is there, but I can't lie and say I didn't feel all of the 208 minutes (I saw the director's cut). 3 and a half hours of constant depression and horror... it's just hard to take.
The acting and script is also very very good, you just get enough that watching these people in peril matters, but who they are outside the sub really doesn't matter much.
Oh, and most depressing. ending. ever. The fact that Peterson constructs a Hollywood-like conventional last act seemingly just to make the ending more bleak and nihilistic, is kind of harsh but brilliant at the same time.
It's hard to grade... I can without a doubt appreciate Peterson's work and balls making this, but I can't say I liked watching it or will be revisiting it later. But maybe that's the point.
4/5

It's great. I had sometimes a problem with it being monotone, but that's what makes it so authentic and really gives you the impression of the submarine life. The ending leaves you thinking.

I haven't seen this, but it surprises me that it is widely considered great. Perfect Storm and Troy and Air Force One are all so bad, it surprises me that Peterson would be capable of crafting a strong film.

I expect bad material from a director who has a slew of bad films on his career. This is not to say he is incapable of crafting a good film, nor that this movie is bad, simply that I would be surprised if it is good considering the directors track record.
