Boogie Nights is a 1997 drama film written and directed by Paul Thomas Anderson. Set in Los Angeles's San Fernando Valley, the script focuses on a young nightclub dishwasher who becomes a popular star of pornographic films, and chronicles his rise and fall from the Golden Age of Porn of the 1970s through the excess of the 1980s.

Great movie. Fine performances from the cast. Magnolia was a much better film though IMO.

Great movie

Dirk -- "Are you gonna take the skates off?"

Rollergirl -- "I never take the skates off....and don't fuckin' cum in me!"

Jack -- "Aim it at her tits Eddie!"

'nuff said.

Great film, not as good as Magnolia but miles ahead of Punch-Drunk Love, I mean it has Don Cheadle and Philip Seymour Hoffman...it rocks.

Just watching this movie wants to make me change my name to Dirk Diggler and enying having a prostatic 12" large penis.
Joking aside, I found the movie very compelling and emotional. Paul Thomas Anderson knows what type of music to use to set the tone for Boogie Nights and the characters are at least likable unlike Traffic. The main theme of the movie isnt so much about the XXX world but the companionship and family bond that Dirk Diggler formed when he came from a broken family himself. He looks up to Burt Reynold's character as a father figure and Amber Waves as his mother, and I think thats how most of the characters in the movie see that. During the last half of the scene it shows the fall of Dirk Diggler and the many other characters, at this point it tries to convey the message that a friendship bond should never be broken as they shown with Burt and Mark Walberg's character. Burt Reynold's definately deserved his best supporting nod for this picture

Awesome movie. I just watched this movie tonight, and it is an amazing film. The story is so great, and the actors are all at top form here. I also really liked how 3 different situations all occur around the same area, that was so ingenous. It's entertaining, and a very good film with great performances. Even the typically bland and wooden Mark Whalberg is surprisingly very impressive in his role.

Oh and the fake penis looked, um fake.

But I did have this one friend who had one close to that size. Rather distubring.

One of my favorite movies ever, seriously I can watch this movie everyday and I wouldnt get tired of it, just so many fantastic scenes and the cast is amazing. Above and beyond Anderson's Magnolia imo, just such a fun movie. I'll write a review tomorrow, its way too late.

This one is a bit better than Magnolia. Quality-wise, they are about equal, but this one is just funnier and simply more fun. Mark Wahlberg is a bit bland, but I think he's actually supposed to be. HeatherbGraham is a blast and Burt Reynolds does his job well too. I was a bit disappointed by Julianne Moore. She didn't seem to have been given a lot to work with. Overall it is still a very well-writtten and directed movie with good performances.

I agree with Arthur. Although it drags, this one manages to be incredibly interesting, well acted, and - most importantly - controversial.

I like how Paul Thomas Anderson is able to incorporate the american dream with falling from grace too. He also has a knack for great 70s rock as montages for each of his characters. Boogie Nights is a classic in a way because it has made the name Dirk Diggler famous. Just by cinematography like the beginning shot of the diner shows how you can use old disco classics to amke a montage effective

Excellent film. While the beginning is great and provacitive and all, the dark twisted road that he takes these characters down is what really pushes it to brilliance. Wahlberg's character jerking for someone in his car, combined with the sequence of Heather Graham ripping apart someone's face with her rollerskates, is one incredibly fucked up and disturbing scene. The backdrop music is great, the cast and performances are amazing, the direction is great, what more can you ask for. Love it.

Terrifically acted, with a stellar ensemble cast, and Anderson shows shades of Scorsese in his directing, but I felt like the story never really took off until near the end. For much of the film, it's just entertaining fun: people swearing, having sex, doing drugs, etc. But from the scene where Dirk and Reed get denied access to their demo tapes to nearly the end, it becomes truly dark and haunting and it's really the strong point of the film. The bit where they're trying to steal money from Alfred Molina is nerve-wracking and suspenseful and exceptionally well-executed. Ditto the scene where Don Cheadle gets stuck in the robbery. It was the scenes like that that really made me like the film a lot more than I did at the beginning, which was pretty shallow. All in all, a pretty good film with some great moments within it.

I think it goes off the tracks a little at the end, but otherwise, I love it. It's one of my favorites.

Post Re: Boogie Nights
Just saw this for the first time tonight and was completely blown away. This is an AMAZING movie. I loved everything about it, from the fascinating storyline to the interesting "family" dynamic that was set in place as well. It's hilarious at times, often quite dark and surprisingly emotional as well. And the acting was just beyond phenomenal. Mark Wahlberg, Burt Reynolds and Julianne Moore all take characters that could potentially be completely unlikable and make them compassionate and multi-layered. Their portrayals are definitely award-worthy and some of the best of their careers. Supporting turns from Heather Graham, John C. Reilly and the rest of the ensemble are also great. The direction from P.T. Anderson is fantastic. The attention to detail is hard to ignore, and most of the film feels very realistic and accurate. His fluid long takes and the great cinematography add a lot to the film and make it quite a visual spectacle. And the screenplay is just perfect. I really don't know whether I prefer Magnolia, There Will Be Blood or this film in Anderson's filmography, but all three are classics - and this is a new all-time favorite of mine. A+

i have rarely been this blown away by a film. I knew Paul Thomas Anderson was brilliant ever since I first saw one of his films (Magnolia), and each film I have seen since (Punch-Drunk Love, There Will Be Blood) has only made it more apparent; but this film has officially made the guy one of my all-time favorite directors. He takes a very awkward subject (porn) and turns it into something that is all at once entertaining, disturbing, hilarious, and touching. Amazing performances, incredible use of long tracking shots, and a plot that goes in a completely different direction than you're expecting. A classic, for sure.

A+
