Hypocrasy that I haven't admitted to already? I've been in arguments? Yes. Who hasn't. I'm a bastard sometimes! Yes!

I do not go around baiting people into arguments intentionally (although sometimes I misread something or take something too far, like everybody). I do not hold up Lord of the Rings to some epic standard, dragging Lord of the Rings into topics which have nothing to do with topics. Bringing fanboy wars between Star Wars and The Matrix and Lord of the Rings into topics about Natalie Portman and Cate Blanchett? It maybe would have been one thing had they both been nominated for those respective movies and said "Wow, Cate Blanchett excels in beauty and grace as Galadriel and Natalie Portman is just pointless in Star Wars" (not my actual opinion, just an example!)

If you call saying "Natalie Portman's cardboard acting in Star Wars" intitiating a personal attack against all Star Wars lovers on the site then I don't know what else to say to you or them. The comment was completely fair, and I'm not the only one who thinks so. The fact that you came up with a way to drag the franchise wars and your ego into this thread exposes everything that needs to be said. You are completely, utterly obsessed with whoever you precieve to be fanboys, and your perceptions of people which are COMPLETELY misguided.

Mav, you need to step back and take a breather.

You have said FAR more about Lord of the Rings in your posting career than I will even attempt to emulate. If anybody is obsessed with it, it is you.

Excuse me, but did I mention any franchises in this thread first, or did you? Before you try to accuse somebody of dragging franchise wars into something, you better reread the thread, and you'll see that I didn't mention anything, you did. I definitely took it as a baiting comment, and fully expected the innocent act, as if you really didn't say it with the knowledge that it was an unnecessary jab. Now, I'm giving you credit enough for being a smart guy by saying that I think you were well aware that your comment was the exact type of comment that you have complained about. You definitely weren't too dumb to realize that such a comment wouldn't be popular with me, especially since you have grandstanded about me making negative LOTR comments in the same vain.

I'm done. This is definitely not worth the time to discuss any further. No offense.

I mentioned Star Wars in the context to how it compares to OTHER Natalie Portman performances. Not how Star Wars compares to Cate Blanchett performances. How can I not discuss or compare movies if I'm not allowed to compare and contrast in a semi-thoughtful manner (if we want talking points about why I think that, then I can provide them)? Mav, I expect you to recognize that my comments were in SUPPORT of Natalie Portman finding what I feel are better avenues of expression than what I feel her Star Wars performances have been. Nowhere in my thoughts on the Supporting Actresses were ANY thoughts given to the conflict between Lord of the Rings and Star Was franchises. That is completely a fiction brought to this topic by yourself and by you pointing it out by pointing it out to me in your topic (and STILL at that time I had no idea how I ruffled your feathers).

Unless something like Lecter and I going on about Master & Commander (and I did personally attack him in that thread, even though it was disguised as a joke, and it mostly was), I do not sit there in my free time before work and say "I wonder how some misc. Star Wars fan will feel about this opinion on her performance, and how that might irritate and annoy anybody who might have a grudge against any misc. actor in any misc. franchise which might be "competative" to Star Wars". I expect everyone to be adult enough to think that if I say that "the special effects are bad in the Spider-man pizza scene" I am not saying "...because Harry Potter is the best franchise in the world, and nothing could be better than Potter." Perhaps that is too ambitious. Perhaps we are so programed now we are starting to think that we can't like Superman if we like Batman. I can't like Lord of the Rings if I like Star Wars.

The ONLY reason I even addressed your opinion on Cate Blachett was that you purposely felt the need to call me out in the topic and start this between us. I am completely offended that you take a stupid mediocre opinion and then drag the history of the website and egos into the mix.

There is no reason why you needed to call me out. That was wayyyyyy crossing the line. If you take these comments about Star Wars too seriously, then I'm sorry, I'm not going to stop expressing my opinions about the movies. And I'm not going to be afraid to say that I really like Lord of the Rings and much of the Star Wars saga. I mean, come on, if anybody, I was the one who wrote the big article on Box Office Mojo which said that Hayden did a really great job in Episode II even though I thought Natalie was the weakest link.

If you prevent me from having the freedom to express these opinions, then the board should close up now. Because it's pointless to express any opinions that don't perscribe to a certain viewpoint.

wow.
ridiculous.

anyway, back to the topic.
Actor, Supporting:

kypade prefers:
1 Clive Owen, Closer. He was one of the highlights of the film and that's saying something, as l loved the film.
2 Thomas Haden Church, Sideways. All four performances in the film were above average, and his was second only to Giamatti.
3 Morgan Freeman, Million Dollar Baby. Definitely not his best ever, but he still shone. (Wait, shone? Shined? Shound? huh? *head explodes*)
4 Alan Alda, The Aviator. He was great, but far underused.
5 Jamie Foxx, Collateral. How he even go in, l've no idea. l didn't particularly think he was that great, period. Then again, it's been about what...6, 7 months since l've seen the film. meh.

kypade predicts:
1 Freeman. (duh.)
2 Church. (would be great)
3 Owen. (l hope)
4 Foxx. (could happen)
5 Alda (l have no idea if he has any chance, but l'm leaning towards no)

Actress, Supporting

kypade prefers:
1. Natalie Portman, Closer. BTW, l really liked Closer. Another highlight, and probably THE best part of the film. She was fantastic. Definitely my choice for sup. actrss of the yr.
2 Virginia Madsen, Sideways. l didn't especially love the character, but Madsen played her excellently. Amazing chemistry with Giamatti, and overall great performance.
3 Sophie Okonedo, Hotel Rwanda. By far one of the most powerful performances (in the sup actrs anyway). Really felt for her character. l thought she was great.
4 Cate Blanchett, The Aviator. l was hardly enamored with her performance at all, but she was still better than:
5 Laura Linney, Kinsey. If you'd like to type about "cardboard performances" see her. Very flat. Not necessarily bad, per se, just...not good.

kypade predicts:
1 Blanchette. (duh)
2 Madsen. (would be great)
3 Portman. (l hope)
4 Okonedo (l'd approve. doubt it)
5 Linney. (um. no)

I'm picking Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind. A win for The Aviator could signal a sweep. The Incredibles is the dark horse.

I pick Eternal Sunshine of the spotless Mind and strongly hope for The Aviator not to win here.

Screenplay is always a pity Oscar (or to say it more gently the award for deserving movies that don't get much else), so Eternal and Sideways will win here...
If either M$B or Aviator pullsoff an upset and wins screenplay, we'll know very early who wins best Picture

Original: Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind
Adapted: Sideways

Both seem like foregone conclusions.

Concur with general consensus, with Eternal Sunshine being more of a lock than Sideways. Million Dollar Baby could upset Sideways, while there is no way The Aviator could upset Eternal Sunshine.

DiCaprio
Eastwood
Foxx

Cheadle's performance > Foxx's, by a lil bit, but both were outstanding...Leo was quite good as well. Same with Eastwood, but he'd be last in my preferences...well, after Depp, since l haven't seen NEverland.

Foxx'll win.
