Generally speaking, I thought Avatar was a fantastic experience. With that being said, it's clearly yet another example of the white guilt fantasy, and I couldn't be more disappointed in that respect. This bugged me several times throughout the film. A few cringe worthy scenes when looking at it this way. However, I'm torn, because I love the "one with nature" message the film heavily portrays. The whole idea of there being a planet out there in which the beings connect to nature not just figuratively, but literally, is just so cool to me. (Although, again, the whole "you must dominate a beast to become a man" thing is cringe worthy. When Jake is connecting to that creature, it's really done in an awkward, domineering way - not a "we are one" kind of thing.)

Moreover, there are numerous riveting shots in this film for me. The shot in which Netyri is holding the human form of Jake gave me goosebumps each time (saw the film twice). I just want to take a picture of that shot and frame it. At that point in the film, that single shot says quite a bit about the human race.

(I really need to get to writing a review... I have a lot to say about the film.)

Ultimately, I think Titanic is miles better, and I would much rather still see Titanic at the top. But as others have said, Titanic had to fall eventually, and I'm so glad it's Avatar doing it and not Transformers 2 or some other piece of junk.

Peace,
Mike

I have to agree that the single most beautiful shot is when she is holding the human Jake Sully in her arms. That scene is just amazing. The way they look at one another, her realisation that this is actually the person that she has fallen in love with, just in a different form... they way they look at one another.. amazing...

"Buoyed by its nine Oscar nominations, "Avatar" reigned as boxoffice champ in its eighth round on the foreign circuit, grossing $76 million on the weekend from 10,523 screens in 120 markets.

Its record-setting overseas gross now stands at $1.580 billion, the polar opposite of the anemic foreign tally (less than $3.5 million) amassed to date by "Avatar's" chief Academy Award competitor, director Kathryn Bigelow's "The Hurt Locker."

Record global tally for director James Cameron's blockbuster spectacle in 3D released by 20th Century Fox now stands at $2.210 billion.

Top market on the weekend was Italy where "Avatar" generated $8.6 million from 829 screens for a market cume of $69.8 million. Top territories in terms of market cumes are: China (total, $144.4 million), France ($141.4 million), Germany ($117.3 million), the U.K. ($114.7 million, making "Avatar" the biggest grosser ever to play the market), Russia ($105.9 million) and Japan ($107 million).

In other weekend action, the Warner Bros. pic "Sherlock Holmes" with Robert Downey Jr. and Jude Law held on to its No. 2 position overall, grossing on the weekend $16.6 million from 5,230 screens in 57 markets. A No. 1 France opening, as per Warners, generated $5.8 million from 719 screens.

No. 3 was Disney's return to hand-drawn animation, "The Princess and the Frog," which opened in seven territories and which in total provided 60% of the overall weekend gross of $15.3 million from 3,225 screens in 32 markets.

Top openers were Spain ($4 million from 400 screens, ranking No. 2 in the market) and the U.K., where the market ranking was No. 2 with $3.2 million from 456 sites. "Princess'" second France round boosted the market cume to $12.6 million in 11 days. Foreign cume stands at $95 million.

Tied for the fourth spot was "Up in the Air," which, propelled by its six Academy Award nominations plus openings in nine territories, touched down to $10.5 million from 2,619 screens in 46 markets for a foreign cume to date of $48.5 million. Director Jason Reitman's comedy-drama starring George Clooney premiered at No. 4 in Germany with $1.8 million from 242 spots.

Also grossing $10.5 million on the weekend was Clint Eastwood-directed "Invictus" from Warners, which played 2,400 screens in 28 markets for a foreign cume to date of $43.4 million. A U.K. bow generated $1.75 million from 275 sites, sufficient for a No. 3 market ranking. A Japan opener came up with $1.8 million from 320 screens.

Finishing No. 5 was Fox's "Alvin and the Chipmunks: The Squeakquel," now in its 7th round on the international circuit, which collected $7.1 million from 4,002 situations in 41 territories. Overseas total so far has surpassed the $200-million mark ($200.7 million).

Universal's "It's Complicated" drew $6 million on the weekend from 2,600 locations in 40 territories, raising its overseas cume to $73.6 million. The Nancy Meyers' romantic comedy starring Meryl Streep took the No. 6 Germany spot with $1.4 million from 512 sites for an 18-day market total of $7.3 million.

Fox's "Tooth Fairy," a comic fantasy starring Dwayne Johnson came up with $3.8 million on the weekend from 2,119 screens in 21 territories for an early foreign cume of $31.8 million.

Sony's "Did You hear About The Morgans?," the romantic comedy costarring Hugh Grant and Sarah Jessica Parker, grabbed $3.7 million on the weekend from 2,000 screens in 49 markets, pushing its foreign cume to $41.8 million. A Russia bow at 314 spots generated $1.4 million.

In the U.K., Paramount opened "Youth In Revolt," Dimension Films' romantic comedy starring Michael Cera, in the No. 6 market spot. The weekend produced $1.2 million from 282 locales.

In Germany, top local language newcomer was "Zeiten Andern Dich," director of Uli Edel's biopic of Tunisian-German gangsta rapper Bushido (nee Anis Ferchichi). The Constantin release opened No. 3 in the market, garnering an estimated $2.5 million from 425 locations.

Opening in France was Pathe's "Proteger et servir" ("Protect and Serve"), director and co-scripter Eric Lavaine's comedy about a pair of policemen costarring Kad Merad, Clovis Cornillac and Carol Bouquet. Its debut weekend at 300 sites produced $1.5 million and a No. 6 market ranking.

Other international cumes: DreamWorks/Paramount's "The Lovely Bones," $12.6 million; Sony's "Cloudy With a Chance of Meatballs," $98.3 million (thanks to a $3 million weekend at 1,288 screens in 21 markets); The Weinstein Co.'s "Nine," estimated $20 million; Sony's "Legion," $9.8 million; Universal's "Serge Gainsbourg, vie heroique," $7.7 million over 19 days in France only; IM Global's "Paranormal Activity," estimated $75 million; Sony's "Friendship," $12.5 million from Germany and Austria; and Universal's "Couples Retreat," $59.6 million. Hm, Princess and the Frog could pass $250 million WW despite a very American subject. And Invictus looks set for at least $100 million WW.

France is helping Invictus enormously. As of last weekend it made $17,775,074 there - after three weeks only. Which is more than films like Alvin 2, The Proposal or District 9 did there in total.

And the film sitll has Netherlands, Italy, Germany, Russia and about 8-10 smaller markets ahead.

Doesn't mean sh.. for domestic, but in France PERCY JACKSON sold almost three times as many tickets opening day than WOLFMAN (VALENTINE didn't open)

Fox International is much better at promoting and marketing then domestic division, so I expect PJ to crack atleast 100M overseas. But I fully expect PJ to loose in all the territories where VSDAY releases this weekend. It can handle Wolfman though.

Some poster on BOM said this -

Quote:
If this is any indication of the future of Avatar, here's what happened in Belgium this week (10 days ago it was still number 1 since the first day).

1 - Percy Jackson
2 - Valentine's Day
3 - The Wolfman
4 - The Princess and the Frog
5 - The Lovely Bones
6 - Avatar

I guess it's enough with the Sci-fi now. Even if we still have to call to get a ticket for a 3D projection (that will stay full a long time). Yes, it's still full on week-end, but we don't have a lot of screens.

So we need to base our international numbers for Avatar on Belgium because it fell to number 6 there?

No, but the competition is strong.

Worldwide, star appeal is still strong and V-Day basically screams that, not to mention the title itself.

Percy Jackson is fantasy and fantasy always does well.

The other 3 movies well, I'm not really commenting, but, Avatar has dominated for so long, it is possible (obviously) that people want something new. This weekend is the best in a long while especially for OS audiences.

Princess + the Frog is Disney + animation so that should do well too. Whatever it is, who cares? Avatar has done what nothing has done before and will be hard pressed to do again. Domestic, I believe it'll be taken down really soon, but international, wow, no words.

Actually what I think is Avatar will hold better most of the markets where Percy and VD will be fighting for the top spot. In this they will fall somewhere to Avatar and they may rise to Avatar most of the places.

There is still a chance for Avatar to make it bigger than any of the two overall for the weekend. But I still see Percy first, VD second and Avatar third as of now for the weekend which is definitely a good sign :)

PJ is a major flop overseas for an action/adventure, fx heavy fantasy film. Wolfman opening is great. Valentine's Day opening is good.

"20th Century Fox's "Avatar" in its ninth round on the foreign circuit defiantly stared down overseas openings of three big major studio films over the weekend, emerging No. 1 with $59 million drawn from 8,453 screens in 71 markets.

Director James Cameron's blockbuster epic in 3D pushed its record-setting overseas gross total to $1.690 billion, and its unprecedented worldwide cume to $2.350 billion. The 20th Century Fox release was the sole holdover in the weekend's top five titles.

Top "Avatar" on the weekend was Japan, which generated $5.8 million from 569 spots for a market cume of $121.9 million. Other big markets in order of market cumes are France ($156.4 million), China ($155.5 million), Germany ($125.3 million), the U.K. (124.4 million) and Russia ($108.5 million.)

No. 2 on the weekend was Warner Bros.' "Valentine's Day," which kicked off its foreign run at 4,562 venues in 52 markets for a weekend tally of $30.4 million for a $6,664 per-screen average.

The Garry Marshall romantic comedy with Ashton Kutcher and Jennifer Garner leading a multi-name cast opened strongest in Australia (No. 1 with $6.4 million from 373 sites), the U.K. (No. 2 with $4.7 million from 432 spots) and Germany ($2.5 million from 410 sites). Domestically, it grossed $52.3 million on the weekend.

No. 3 was Fox's adventure fantasy, "Percy Jackson & the Olympians: The Lightning Thief," director Chris Columbus' adaptation of the popular book series by Rick Riordan. Opening round produced $28 million from 5,800 venues in 40 territories with No. 1 market finishes recorded in South Korea, Brazil, Thailand, the Philippines, Indonesia and Venezuela.

Finishing fourth was Universal's "The Wolfman," which collected an estimated $21 million from 4,222 situations – for a $4,974 per-screen average – in 37 territories. Domestically on the weekend it premiered No. 3 with a weekend tally of $31.1 million.

Director Joe Johnston's update (costarring Benicio De Toro, Anthony Hopkins and Emily Blunt) of the classic 1941 Universal horror title (costarring Lon Chaney Jr., Bela Lagosi and Maria Ouspenskaya) drew $3.4 million from 404 screens in the U.K., finishing No. 3 in the market.

"The Wolfman" opened No. 1 in Mexico with $3.2 million from 486 sites and placed No. 2 in Spain with $2.4 million from 426 locales. Its France debut produced $1.7 million from 388 screens. The horror title has 25 overseas territories yet to play with Italy on tap this Friday (Feb. 1).

No. 5 was Fox's "My Name Is Khan," a 9/11-related drama about a Mumbai Muslim (played by Bollywood's Shah Rukh Khan) with asperger's detained at LAX airport after action suspiciously. The Fox International local production opened No. 1 in India ($9.2 million from 1,450 screens) and generated an overall weekend tally of $14.2 million from 1,572 screens in seven markets. Pound for pound, a strong opening splash generating more than $9,000 per screen.

Disney's "The Princes and the Frog" grossed an animated $11.3 million from 3,643 locations in 39 markets, hoisting its overseas cume past the $100 million mark ($109 million) with the prospect of various holiday playtimes ahead in active territories. Top markets were France ($3.9 million in its third round from 674 screens for a market cume of $17.6 million), the U.K. ($2.4 million from 460 sites, cume $6 million) and Spain ($2.2 million from 375 venues for a $6.2 million cume).

Finishing No. 1 in the Paris area was Warner's "Sherlock Homes," which detected $9.6 million overall on the weekend from 4,224 screens in 53 territories. Foreign gross total for the drama-comedy starring George Clooney stands at $58 million.

After five months on the foreign circuit (it began its run on Sept. 16), Sony's family-oriented animation title, "Cloudy With A Chance Of Meatballs," still is racking up boxoffice mileage with openings in Korea and Portugal, and grossing $3.3 million on the weekend overall at 1,455 sites 22 markets. Actually I was not expecting a blockbuster opening overseas this weekend considering this weekend is a Valentine heavy weekend and couples win in every aspect rather than action seekers. From what I can say is that next weekend will decide whether PJ will be flop overseas or not. If it makes about 100M-150M overseas I think so it is not a flop.

PJ wasn't released in every market and I guess it could do well in the coming weekends. It did fend off Avatar and VD's competition in the smaller markets though :)

I wouldn't count out a Percy Jackson sequel yet. It might have somewhat underperformed overseas so far, but it overperformed domestically, I'd say.

"Showing modest boxoffice fatigue after more than two months dominating the foreign circuit, 20th Century Fox's "Avatar" landed in its 10th consecutive round the No. 1 film overseas, generating $48.5 million -- down 18% from the prior weekend -- from 7,247 screens in 71 markets.

Overseas gross total for director James Cameron's record-setting blockbuster was $1.780 billion with its worldwide tally weighing in at $2.468 billion. In addition to its worldwide record in current dollars, "Avatar" has now beaten 1997's "Titanic's" global boxoffice milestone on an inflation-adjusted basis as well.

Top market remains France where "Avatar" claimed $5.1 million on the weekend from 529 locations, raising its market cume to $164 million. It became on the weekend the biggest-grossing title ever to play Mexico, where the market cume stands at $42.5 million.

Director Martin Scorsese's "Shutter Island," which opened No. 1 in the U.S. and Canada, premiered in nine overseas markets via Paramount and other distributors for an opening boxoffice gross of $9.1 million.

The seven "Island" markets Paramount handled (Australia, Denmark, Finland, the Netherlands, New Zealand, Norway and Sweden) generated $4.6 million of the weekend total from 478 locations.

Biggest foreign territories for the drama co-starring Leonardo DiCaprio and Mark Ruffalo as federal marshals investigating a prisoner disappearance on a remote island were Spain ($3.2 million on the weekend at 419 screens via local distributor Manga Films), Australia ($2.5 million from 250 screens) and Russia ($1.3 million on the weekend via Cascade Film).

Director Kathryn Bigelow's awards-laden "The Hurt Locker" (the film won six British Academy of Film and Television Arts citations last night, including best picture and best director) opened No. 8 in Australia via Village Roadshow for $354,939 from 46 locations for a per-screen average of $7,716. In Chile, "Locker" also opened at No. 8, drawing $32,158 from 16 screens.

"The Ghost Writer," which won for Roman Polanski a Silver Bear best director citation at the 60th Berlin International Film festival, opened commercially in Germany via Kinowelt in the No. 10 market spot with $870,960 drawn from 261 spots for a $3,337 per-screen average. Hanging on for what will be its farewell round atop of the foreign circuit, 20th Century Fox's "Avatar" on the weekend made it 11 straight stanzas in the No. 1 spot by grossing $36.1 million from 6,535 screens in 70 markets.

Total foreign take by director James Cameron's 3D blockbuster now stands at $1.844 billion -- thus surpassing the $1.843-billion worldwide boxoffice total rolled up by the director's 1997 former record holder, "Titanic." "Avatar's" worldwide cume is $2.550 billion. To date, its foreign gross is more than two-and-a-half times its domestic cume of $707 million.

The biggest "Avatar" market on the weekend was Japan, where the weekend take was $4 million from 514 locations for a Japan cume of $140 million. Top market overall remains France where the Cameron epic has grossed a total of $169 million thus far.

"Avatar's " foreign reign will be usurped by the opening this week of Disney's "Alice in Wonderland," director Tim Burton's 3D re-imagining of Lewis Carroll's classic, starring Johnny Depp, in 41 foreign markets representing about 60% of the total offshore marketplace.

Italy and Sweden kick off on Wednesday, followed by openings in 26 additional territories on Thursday including Australia, German-speaking Europe, Korea and Russia. On Friday, "Alice" will set down in 13 more markets including Mexico, Poland, Taiwan and the United Kingdom.

Handled overseas by Paramount in all markets except Spain, Italy, Germany, Austria and Russia, director Martin Scorsese's "Shutter Island" grossed $19 million from 20 territories on the weekend for an early foreign cume of $34 million. It is tied for the No. 2 spot on the weekend.

France led the way with No. 1 bow of $6.8 million from 522 venues, making "Shutter Island's" opening surge the biggest ever in the market for a Scorsese title. No. 1 openings were also recorded in Belgium, Portugal and Taiwan, plus a No. 1 second-weekend holdover in Spain. In Germany, the drama starring Leonardo DiCaprio about a prisoner disappearance at a remote insane asylum opened No. 2 via Concorde with $3.7 million drawn from 472 screens.

Also grossing $19 million on the weekend -- and also tied for No. 2 -- was Fox's adventure fantasy "Percy Jackson & the Olympians: The Lightning Thief," which played 6,350 screens in 65 territories for a foreign cume to date of $95.4 million. Japan led the way with a No. 2 opening with $4.1 million secured from 561 locations.

Garnering $3.4 million in its Russia opening at 440 screens was Universal's classic horror update "The Wolfman," which grabbed an estimated $10.8 million overall on the weekend from 5,302 venues in 57 territories. Foreign cume for the Benicio Del Toro-Anthony Hopkins-Emily Blunt vehicle stands at $63.3 million with five more markets to play including Japan on April 22. It ranks No. 3 on the weekend.

A close No. 4 is Warner Bros. romantic comedy "Valentine's Day," which seduced an estimated $10.4 million from about 4,400 screens in 58 markets. International cume stands at $87.4 million.
