Bluebomb wrote: Archangel wrote: HONG KONG - Weekend 6
Avatar already surpassed Titanic's lifetime gross of $14.8m after 5 weekends. Interesting though because the articles are all saying Avatar is the new record holder when according to my charts, i've got Armageddon at #1 with $20.84m. Not sure if mine is right or they're right (i can't remember where i got the charts from).
Anyhow at this rate, it will blow past Armageddon's supposed $20.84m gross anyway. It's got Chinese New Year coming up and it's normally a very good period for BO....though the on the flipside, their will surely be huge competition from local films. It's not just local films that Avatar will have to contend with though, the lack of screens and other new Hollywood releases are other factors. Here, one cinema usually has 6-7 screens and with 8 movies (Yes, 8...9 if you count the 2 versions of The Princess And The Frog) coming out, each cinema simply doesn't have the capacity nor the excuse that there's no competition to show Avatar on its biggest screens. Here are the movies that are coming out this week...I'll break it down by local and Hollywood films. Local: True Legend (promoted to death over here - will occupy the biggest screens) All's Well End's Well Too 2010 72 Tenants of Prosperity 14 Blades Pleasant Goat and Big Bad Wolf (Saturday release) Hollywood: Valentine's Day Percy Jackson The Princess And The Frog (2 versions) Already looking at a couple of theaters that have Thursday and Friday advanced ticket showings out, Avatar has seen its showings drop from 6 (on Tuesday) to 1 or 2 (on Thursday). Not to mention the fact that Avatar went from being shown on the biggest screens to the smallest screens in the biggest theaters. I wouldn't even be surprised if Avatar is completely pulled from some theaters this week as demand has steadily burned off in some areas. Last week, Avatar dropped 32%. This week, I wouldn't be surprised if it fell by over 50% even with the holiday and IMAX factored in. Valentines Day would hardly be comp for its demographic,

I wouldn't be that sure. Valentine's Day hits over 20 markets this upcoming weekend and it's the perfect release date for it. It will open in Germany, UK, Australia, Japan, Netherlands, Spain, Russia, Scandinavia and a bunch of other markets. That can easily mean $60+ million.

If Avatar drops 16% like last week it will still be near 66 million.

Why is everyone so sure that PERCY JACKSON doesn't have a chance? It's opening almost everywhere, only big market to open (two weeks) later is Japan...

 Re: Avatar (INTL.)
Mesjarch thanks for the update. Just a question why is it that we have few movies performing well in PLN (in this case #2 and #3 in PLN ahead of Avatar) and not in USD? Is that because of $ value at those times? EDIT : Stupid Question got the answer. Admissions chart tells everything, just got confused for a second there

Hmm, so there's a chance of it actually passing Titanic even admissions-wise...

 Re: Avatar (INTL.)
Hmm, I did some calculations of the best case scenario and even then Avatar looks to miss $3 billion worldwide.
Then again, I did this sort of calculations a few weeks ago and Avatar kept passing my best case scenario all the time anyway, so I remain optimistic.

Avatar keeps on chugging...
So around 13.5 million per day overseas.
looks like Avatar will scream past 2 billion overseas.

should pass 1.7 billion by Sunday or at latest Monday...
so another 120+ million overseas in a week...
3 billion is not possible but 2 billion overseas looks certain, especially with some calling for close to another 100 million from Japan.

it will make 120 million overseas this weekend and will be close to 1.7 billion by Monday.
If it continues falling at such a rate 2 billion is near a lock.

i dont know what is more impressive
the fact that this movie had a 70% increase in its 8th week
or that its 8th week was 2nd biggest week of all time (behind new moon's ow)
