 70. THE HUNT FOR RED OCTOBER (John McTiernan, 1990)"My Morse is so rusty, I could be sending him dimensions on playmate of the month."The best Tom Clancy adaptation. Absolutely riveting from start to finish. Baldwin is a superb Jack Ryan and Connery is great as his counterpart. It's got a great rewatchability factor, and it's never boring.

69. THE FUGITIVE (Andrew Davis, 1993)"If they can dye the river green today, why can't they dye it blue the other 364 days of the year?"Another great thriller. Jones definitely earned his Oscar, but Ford is just as good. Another film that's always entertaining and one that I can watch over and over again.

68. SNATCH. (Guy Ritchie, 2000)"Why are we stopped here? What's wrong with that spot?" "It's too tight." "Too tight? You could land a jumbo fucking jet in there."Fantastically stylish and utterly hilarious. It's very British, but I happen to love my British humour, and this is about as good as it gets. The multiple storylines interweave perfectly, and the colourful cast of characters make it that much more entertaining. Brad Pitt is terrific.

67. APOLLO 13 (Ron Howard, 1995)"I don't care about what anything was DESIGNED to do, I care about what it CAN do."One of the greatest historical dramas ever made, it's gripping and tense and yet mostly factual. The cast is terrific and the look of the film is incredibly authentic. I'm a fan of the Apollo missions and space travel, and this is my favourite film in that genre.

Re: KJ User's Top 100 Lists: trixster!
66. INDIANA JONES AND THE LAST CRUSADE (Steven Spielberg, 1989)"Germany has declared war on the Jones boys."After the dark and depressing second film, this was a welcome return to comic adventure and good ol' fashioned fun. The banter between Ford and Connery is terrific, and the cartoonish Nazi villains suit the light tone perfectly. Though it rips off the first one much of the time, it's got a lot more humour, and it might be even more entertaining than the original. Might.

Re: KJ User's Top 100 Lists: trixster!
65. MISSION: IMPOSSIBLE (Brian de Palma, 1996)"Hasta lasagna, don't get any on ya."Sure it's confusing the first time around. But by the third or fourth viewing, once you've got the plot all figured out, you can appreciate the stylized action sequences, the brilliance of the vault scene, and the sheer entertainment value. It's a popcorn film, sure, but it's not stupid or silly and every scene in the movie has a purpose other than to look cool. Another film I can watch over and over again and never grow tired of.

Re: KJ User's Top 100 Lists: trixster!
64. AMERICAN BEAUTY (Sam Mendes, 1999)"It's a great thing when you realize you still have the ability to surprise yourself."Some may call it pretentious, and I suppose I agree with that regarding certain aspects of the film (the floating bag), but it's also quite moving. The characters are incredibly well-developed and the changes they go through throughout the movie is the key. They're not static individuals; they're fluid and dynamic and feel like real people. The story is simplistic but told very well, and the direction is immaculate. Another great choice by the Academy.

Re: KJ User's Top 100 Lists: trixster!
63. MINORITY REPORT (Steven Spielberg, 2002)"The Pre-Cogs are never wrong. But, occasionally... they do disagree."Overtly happy ending aside, this is one of the great sci-fi films of the past few years. Visually, it's astounding, of course, but the depths the story goes to and the messages it relates are just as impressive. The action scenes are exciting, the occasional dose of comedy helps lighten the mood, and the acting is great. As crazy as Cruise is in real life, he is a pretty good actor.

62. DOUBLE INDEMNITY (Billy Wilder, 1944)"Yes, I killed him. I killed him for money - and a woman - and I didn't get the money and I didn't get the woman. Pretty, isn't it?"Classic noir. The dialogue - specifically eloquent to get around the censors - is terrific and makes up one of the best screenplays ever written. The traditional elements of film-noir are all present, and in top form, and the acting from the three leads is terrific. A rather underrated classic.

61. FERRIS BUELLER'S DAY OFF (John Hughes, 1986)"Oh, he's very popular Ed. The sportos, the motorheads, geeks, sluts, bloods, waistoids, dweebies, dickheads - they all adore him. They think he's a righteous dude."The pinnacle of teen comedies. Not only is it hilarious - and it is, still making me laugh after the tenth or so viewing - but it's got a great message as well. Instantly memorable characters - especially Rooney, the principal, who's one of the great comic characters in recent memory - and loads of quotable lines. Matthew Broderick's best role and the one he'll be remembered for.

 60. A FEW GOOD MEN (Rob Reiner, 1992)"I run my unit how I run my unit. You want to investigate me, roll the dice and take your chances. I eat breakfast 300 yards from 4000 Cubans who are trained to kill me, so don't think for one second that you can come down here, flash a badge, and make me nervous."Absolutely riveting and terrifically scripted. As procedural as the courtroom scenes can be, the way they are written and the actors' interactions with each other make it incredibly powerful. The fireworks between Cruise and Nicholson at the climax are fantastic. I never grow tired of watching this one.

59. THE GODFATHER (Francis Ford Coppola, 1972)"Leave the gun. Take the cannolis."Simply iconic. Some may think the sequel is even better, but it can't match the number of famous scenes and lines present in this one. Brando's performance is superb, but Pacino's low-key one is even better. A definite masterpiece.

58. THE SILENCE OF THE LAMBS (Jonathan Demme, 1991)"A census taker once tried to test me. I ate his liver with some fava beans and a nice chianti."The second of back-to-back Best Picture winners on my list. A chilling and terrifying look into the mind of a psychopath. Foster is impressive, but Hopkins is simply astounding in one of the all-time great movie villains. The scene where he escapes is one of my favourites in cinema history.

57. THE LORD OF THE RINGS: THE TWO TOWERS (Peter Jackson, 2002)"Be silent. Keep your forked tongue behind your teeth. I did not pass through fire and death to bandy crooked words with a witless worm."The weakest of the trilogy, but it's still fantastic. It suffers most from the multiple storylines and cross-cutting, but the last hour is simply breathtaking. The Battle of Helm's Deep is terrific, but it's the March of the Ents that I love the most. The swelling music in that scene... beautiful. Andy Serkis should have received an Oscar nomination.

Re: KJ User's Top 100 Lists: trixster!
56. X2 (Bryan Singer, 2003)"You are a god among insects. Never let anyone tell you different."One of the very few sequels that improves upon its predecessor. The action scenes are much more impressive - the opening Nightcrawler attack, Wolverine in the mansion, Pyro against the cops - but it's the added story and character depth that truly makes it better. The themes of race and prejudice are perfectly fleshed out in this one. Hugh Jackman owns his character and Ian McKellan is fantastic.
