Even if it makes $800m domestically, it'd still need $700m overseas from a $75m weekend. I'd never say never with this movie, but without the cushion of new markets it seems like a rather steep challenge.

On its own maybe not. But if it makes, say, $2.9 billion...wouldn't Fox try to rerelease it, oush it, invent something...whatever to break $3 billion? Because that sounds much more impressive than $2.9 billion...

Avatar will end up $1B ahead of #2, just like Titanic did. That's great enough. Edit: Well, Titanic was like $900m ahead, Avatar will be over $1B. But who cares, it's the same sum

This is under the assumption that Avatar will get closer to $3 billion than Titanic got to $2 billion...

 Re: Avatar (INTL.)
Screendaily: Avatar maintained its iron grip on the international box office for an eighth consecutive weekend as it extended its run into the history books through Fox International.
James Cameron’s space opera added an estimated $76m from 10,523 screens in 120 countries, dropping merely 20% to raise the tally to $1.58bn.
Combined with the $630.1m North American cumulative total, Avatar’s global take now stands at $2.21bn.
China overtook France to become the biggest overseas market for the film thus far as it grossed $7.6m from 1,328 screens in the fifth weekend for $144.4m. France has generated $141.4m after eight.
Avatar is now the highest grossing release of all time in the UK as $5.2m from 702 boosted the tally to $114.7m and overtook Mamma Mia’s £69.2m local currency record.
The film crossed $100m in its seventh weekend in Japan thanks to $6.3m from 577 that elevated the running total to $106.9m. Italy was the top grossing market of the session and generated a further $8.6m from 829 screens for $69.8m after four weekends.
In several crucial eighth weekend results, Avatar added $7.8m from 707 in Germany after a 3% drop for $117.3m, and is the biggest film of all time in Brazil after $1.6m from 461 boosted the tally to $46.4m. It is now also the biggest industry release in Taiwan, where $449,344 from 89 resulted in $24.6m.
Avatarhas now crossed $100m in six markets: China, France, the UK, Germany, Russia and Japan.

 Re: Avatar (INTL.)
Hmm, at its current rate Japan could be a dark horse for biggest OS market! Its just not letting up, there.
And I'm guessing they're going by local currency to say Avatar is #1 in Brazil.

Dr. Lecter wrote: Hmm, so it'll definitely be at $2.2+ billion worldwide by the end of the weekend. It is actually looking to increase in Germany this weekend despite some potent competition. It'll have broken 8 million admissions by the end of the weekend and will pass Ice Age 3 within the next two weeks (admissions-wise).
Before the end of February, Avatar should be at over $2.5 billion. Do you think Avatar can beat HP1 to claim the largest gross in admissions in Germany the past decade? HP1 is at 12.556.748 followed by FOTR 11.833.420

 Re: Avatar (INTL.)
Can't believe it's going to blow past $200m in China. That's like huge and the first time we've had a $200m grosser in any market overseas since Spirited Away in Japan. That was 2001.

It is amazing though it is expected to cross that mark. I would say what is more impressive is that there are 6 markets already with 100M and some have the contention to go till 150M. That would be a great achievement

 Re: Avatar (INTL.) - $2,105,517,744 Worldwide (#1)
Archangel wrote: HONG KONG - Weekend 6
Avatar already surpassed Titanic's lifetime gross of $14.8m after 5 weekends. Interesting though because the articles are all saying Avatar is the new record holder when according to my charts, i've got Armageddon at #1 with $20.84m. Not sure if mine is right or they're right (i can't remember where i got the charts from).
Anyhow at this rate, it will blow past Armageddon's supposed $20.84m gross anyway. It's got Chinese New Year coming up and it's normally a very good period for BO....though the on the flipside, their will surely be huge competition from local films. It's not just local films that Avatar will have to contend with though, the lack of screens and other new Hollywood releases are other factors. Here, one cinema usually has 6-7 screens and with 8 movies (Yes, 8...9 if you count the 2 versions of The Princess And The Frog) coming out, each cinema simply doesn't have the capacity nor the excuse that there's no competition to show Avatar on its biggest screens. Here are the movies that are coming out this week...I'll break it down by local and Hollywood films. Local: True Legend (promoted to death over here - will occupy the biggest screens) All's Well End's Well Too 2010 72 Tenants of Prosperity 14 Blades Pleasant Goat and Big Bad Wolf (Saturday release) Hollywood: Valentine's Day Percy Jackson The Princess And The Frog (2 versions) Already looking at a couple of theaters that have Thursday and Friday advanced ticket showings out, Avatar has seen its showings drop from 6 (on Tuesday) to 1 or 2 (on Thursday). Not to mention the fact that Avatar went from being shown on the biggest screens to the smallest screens in the biggest theaters. I wouldn't even be surprised if Avatar is completely pulled from some theaters this week as demand has steadily burned off in some areas. Last week, Avatar dropped 32%. This week, I wouldn't be surprised if it fell by over 50% even with the holiday and IMAX factored in.
