 Re: Titanic Discussion Thread
Very true. One of those rare times where the film lives up to the hype both in quality and box office.

And yet Titanic had a more impressive run, even without the whole 3D discussion.
Unless Avatar actually hits $1 billion domestically...

I doubt anything can ever outimpress Titanic.

Unless Avatar actually hits $1 billion domestically... Titanic outgrossed E.T. by 50%. Avatar would need 900m to do the same. And, if we count Star Wars SE, which Titanic outgrossed only by around 30%, Avatar would need "just" 780m.

 Re: Titanic Discussion Thread
I go back and forth on whether I think GWTW, E.T., or Titanic is the most impressive run ever.
I think in light of population growth you still have to give it to GWTW.

Was anyone else watching it today on TNT and remembering exactly why it made what it did. It's just a great movie.

 Re: Titanic Discussion Thread
3D impact is a huge for the grosses. I think Titanic on that level cannot be beaten. But then again the 3D runs for Avatar is also great which might take some time to beat

There are other movies being played at a 2D-prices. Yet people still choose to see Avatar. Also, 3d-prices most likely affect repeat business in a negative way. I'll agree about 3d itself having an effect as it is new experience and everything, but not just because of the prices.

 Re: Titanic Discussion Thread
I say that with recent surge of 3D movies (though not being at this bigger scale) like Ice Age 3 and Up doing great business Overseas and Domestically 3D overall is not a new experience for audience. It is the repeat viewing that has been the reason. I see that there is 3D impact but still it is not very huge FACTOR for grosses but it did make a huge difference in breaking the records and earning quick money. If the movie is not good you don't see it again only for the experience specially for a 3 hour long movie

 Re: Titanic Discussion Thread
Offcourse Titanic had a more impressive run than Avatar and even MBFGW (IMO) but we'll leave that discussion for another day.
But you cant deny - no matter what you want to say about Avatar's total (ie. 3D ticket prices) - its week to week holds have been incredible. People are wanting to see the film in 3D and word of mouth is very good, atleast for the visuals.
I recall back in early 1998, the internet discussion and media reports were all about which film would beat Titanic...Spiceworld? No way. Blues Bros 2000. haha. Sphere. No it tanked. The Wedding Singer? Close but not really. Ok Surely US Marshalls. Yes definitely US Marshalls the sequel to the Fugitive. Uhm no. Ok - The Man in the Iron Mask. Leo will take down Leo.... no 300k short. Primary Colors. Again no. Grease Reissue...nope. Lost in Space?? FINALLY YES! Mat Le Blanc sinks Titanic.
Good Times.
I suspect Avatar may survive Edge and the week after. Has no hope for the Valentine's Day weekend though.

 Re: Titanic Discussion Thread
If Avatar manages $30+ million next weekend...it could pass $850 million in total, I'd say.

 Re: Titanic Discussion Thread
$30M+ would mean 15% drop, I doubt that it is gonna happen but then again this is Avatar and it always surprises with Weekend holds
