4th weekend was weaker than Rookies ($6.4m), but it's managed to pull ahead after 4 weeks ($62.6m vs $65.4m). I would say they are roughly the same since Avatar's total includes 3 extra days (including the $4m opening day).
Avatar is officially a 2010 film, so it won't be included in any 2009 charts (including it's Dec. gross), but it's certainly giving 2010 a very strong start and should give 2010 two $100m+ hits, or possibly even three if HP7 can manage it. so will Avatar be likely to hit $100m? I heard that some Japanese take it for granted and are expecting nearly $200m reservedly with low drops because of the popularity of it in Japan. Is that possible? If that's going to happen, wow!

Anyone expecting 200m is silly. Avatar's 4th weekend drop is 6x worse than Ponyo's 4th weekend drop, and Ponyo didn't exactly come close to 200m (172m). A 17% drop, while very good, doesn't suggest a gross way over $100m. A good goal is to beat Pirate 3's $102m (which Avatar is tracking slightly ahead off right now), and if it does that, then the next goal should be to enter the top 10 in USD (though it would need nearly double it's current total to do that).

Re: Japan Box Office (2010), Yearly Results
Eiga's Most Popular Films going into the week.
1. Sayonara itsuka, opens on Jan. 23rd 2. Avatar 3. Where the Wild Things Are 4. A Good Husband 5. The Lovely Bones, opens Jan. 29th 6. The Imaginarium of Doctor Parnassus, opens Jan. 23rd 7. Bandage 8. Oceans, opens Jan. 22nd 9. Up 10. Rambling Hearts
Several openers this week, including these: Surrogates, The Haunting in Connecticut on the 22nd.
Oceans looks awesome, much better than Earth. I think it has a spring release in the states.

Re: Japan Box Office (2010), Yearly Results; Jan. 16-17
The first full-length film adaptation of The Melancholy of Haruhi Suzumiya series suddenly topped Eiga's Most Searched for film chart today. Some might actually know about it here, I noticed a member here had a Hare Hare Yukai dance signature. News of the album was released today, but I don't think that alone would have caused such a spike (noticed the film was up 400% on imdb this week, too) Anyway, the anime is very popular, so there may be a great deal of buzz surrounding this one that hit late. It has been out for like... 5 years without a single film, so. The film opens on Feb. 6th. I don't expect more than 200 screens (if that) tops, but with it's popularity, it might be perform, on a smaller scale I'd think, to Evangelion 2.0 last summer (120 screens, Y4b or $43m) or One Piece this Dec. (190 screens, Y5b+ or mid $50m total).

I think it is very unlikely at this point that Avatar won't pass $100 million.

Re: Japan Box Office (2010), Yearly Results; Jan. 16-17
[Jan. 16-17, 2010
1. Avatar Fox Int'l $5,606,688 4 815 $6,879 -19 $65,211,354 2. Nodame Cantabile: The Final Score - Part I Toho $1,543,953 5 409 $3,775 -38 $35,895,411 3. Where The Wild Things Are Warner Bros Int'l $1,540,086 1 537 $2,868 0 $1,819,542 4. Bandage Toho $1,474,565 1 214 $6,890 0 $1,474,565 5. Up Walt Disney Int'l $1,350,917 7 582 $2,321 -37 $50,595,986 6. One Piece Film: Strong World TOEI $1,063,584 6 193 $5,511 -39 $47,918,186 7. Good husband, A TOEI $887,227 1 241 $3,681 0 $887,227 8. Michael Jackson's This Is It Sony Int'l $512,086 12 247 $2,073 -31 $55,491,011 9. Free and Easy 20: Final Shochiku $421,732 4 176 $2,396 -46 $7,273,894 10. Kamen Rider × Kamen Rider Double & Decade: Movie War2010 TOEI $323,888 6 266 $1,218 -52 $16,395,843
Avatar is still doing very, very well and is targeting $100m.
Nodame Cantabile Part 1 continues it's strong run (the film has been No.2 for 5 straight weeks now), and will clear $40m. Part II will be released on April 17th just in time for Golden Week, about a 10 day frame with many holidays when most have no work or school which begins near the end of April. Alice in Wonderland also opens on the same date.
Decent start for Where The Wild Things Are, it should reach Y1b (success mark).
Good start for Bandage in medium release. Not sure if Toho has any plans on going wider with it or not yet.
Up and One Piece are still doing their thing. Up should finish around $56/57m, but $60m isn't out of the question. And One Piece should finish around $55m.
This Is It also continues it's huge run. An official number (not "exceeding" X yen like usually reported) has been given this week (Y5,048,790,040), and Y5b was the target. I think it's run might be over due to that though, with the re-release, and all five DVD editions placing 1-5th on last week's DVD sales chart.
This week we see several openers: Sayonara itsuka, The Imaginarium of Doctor Parnassu, Oceans, Surrogates, and Haunting in Connecticut.
The latter two likely won't make the top 10 however.

Re: Japan Box Office (2010), Yearly Results; Jan. 16-17
As of 1/21, Avatar has "exceeded" Y6.3b yen (about $69m) with one day to go before heading into the 2-day. So that's roughly a $1m avg. per day this week so far. If Avatar experiences a similar drop as this past weekend, it's total after Sunday should be around $75m. Competition is beginning to appear however, with three films opening on the 22nd, but the only one providing any sort of competition would be Disney's Oceans. Earth actually opened at No.1 back in Jan. 2008 with just over $3m and went on to finish near $25m. So it's probably safe to assume Oceans will do pretty well. Then on the 23rd, Sayonara Itsuka and The Imaginarium of Doctor Parnassus open. Itsuka is receiving some strong buzz, so it should do well this weekend. Doctor Parnassus is difficult to predict because it'll depend on the screen count which I have no clue on.

Re: Japan Box Office (2010), Yearly Results; Jan. 16-17
So Avatar added about 12m for the week for a total of $77m. Down about 15% from last week, very impressive. If it behaves the same this coming week, it'll be around $86/87m. Hm, using similar drops for the next several weeks, it seems headed for about $110/115m. A total around there would put it a bit below the Top 10 All Time in USD, and probably Top 20 in Yen
Yen
1 Spirited Away ¥30.4b 2 Titanic ¥25.9b 3 Howl's Moving Castle ¥22b 4 Harry Potter and the Sorcerer's Stone ¥20.3b 5 Princess Mononoke ¥19.3b 6 Harry Potter and the Chamber of Secrets ¥18b 7 Bayside Shakedown 2 ¥17.35b 8 Ponyo ¥15.5b 9 The Last Samurai ¥13.7b 10 Armageddon ¥13.5b 11 Harry Potter and the Prisoner of Azkaban ¥13.5b 12 Jurassic Park ¥12.9b 13 Star Wars Episode I: The Phantom Menace ¥12.7b 14 Harry Potter and the Goblet of Fire ¥11.5 b 15 Independence Day ¥11.3b 16 Nankyoku Monogatari ¥11.0b 17 Matrix Reloaded ¥11.0b 18 Finding Nemo ¥11.0b 19 Pirates of the Caribbean: At World's End ¥10.9b 20 The Lord of the Rings: The Return of the King ¥10.3b
Avatar is a little over ¥7 right now.

It had to with 13.5b yen, which would suggest something around $110-120m, so almost famous is probably right. It's just difficult to find any numbers besides the yen total for it.

Re: Japan Box Office (2010), Avatar closing in on Top 20's
Quote: Here’s the first teaser trailer for Tetsuya Nakashima‘s Kokuhaku (Confession), which is based on an award-winning novel by written by rookie author and housewife Kanae Minato. Actress Takako Matsu (K-20, Villon’s Wife) plays a dedicated teacher at a junior high school who’s young daughter is found brutally murdered. Believing two of her own students are responsible, she decides to leave the school, but not before a final chilling confession to her class in which she informs them that she’s already enacted her plan for vengeance. A series of further confessions bring other incidents regarding students to light, leading up to a shocking plot twist. “Kokuhaku” will be released by Toho on June 5, 2010. Looks and sounds very goood.

Armageddon grossed around $130 million in Japan as far as I can remember.
Avatar is heading for $120 million, I'd say. The buzz still remains pretty big and the WoM is great too.

Re: Japan Box Office (2010), Jan. 23-24
Jan. 23-24, 2009
1. Avatar Fox Int'l $5,754,496 5 761 $7,562 3 $77,732,992 2. Oceans GAGA $3,756,389 1 302 $12,438 0 $4,356,393 3. Surrogates Walt Disney Int'l $1,515,739 1 319 $4,752 0 $1,935,408 4. Sayonara itsuka Asmik Ace $1,466,476 1 180 $8,147 0 $1,466,476 5. Imaginarium of Doctor Parnassus Showgate $1,455,492 1 233 $6,247 0 $1,455,492 6. Nodame Cantabile: The Final Score - Part I Toho $1,210,697 6 409 $2,960 -22 $38,915,917 7. Yu-Gi-Oh! Movie: Super Fusion! Bonds that Transcends Time Nas $1,152,259 1 124 $9,292 0 $1,152,259 8. Where The Wild Things Are Warner Bros Int'l $939,632 2 537 $1,750 -39 $3,785,947 9. Bandage Toho $786,907 2 214 $3,677 -47 $3,284,830 10. Up Walt Disney Int'l $779,732 8 469 $1,663 -42 $52,683,383
Very impressive for Avatar, it should hit $100m during the weekdays leading into it's 8th weekend.
Oceans opens higher than Earth, and despite being a 3day opener too. It should be able to surpass Earth's $25m without much trouble.
Asmik Ace handled Sayonara Itsuka well with a medium release. With the hype surrounding Miho Nakayam's return to feature film in over 12 years, and good reviews, it should have a leggy run.
Nodame Cantabile Part I continues to hold well, and should finish in the mid 40's. Part II will be released on April 17th ahead of Golden Week.
Decent for Yu-Gi-Oh's 10th Anniversary film, having the second best PTA in the Top 10.
Up has begun to lose some of it's theaters after 8 weeks, but is still doing great. Should finish with 57m or so.
One Piece: Strong World was 11th according to yahoo. I'd assume it's around $50/51m after 7 weeks.

Re: Japan Box Office (2010), Jan. 23-24
No updates this weekend. Leaving for Ohayocon tomorrow night, friday, around 8pm and should arrive around 11pm to reg for the weekend, check into the hotel, all that good stuff. I'm hoping to find the 9-Disc Ponyo DVD Box Set that was only released in Japan last December while I'm there, as well as some other movies that will probably never be released here. Perhaps some films being released this year may be featured one some of the floors. I'll take plenty of pictures and perhaps some videos to share if they're related. I hope I win the Mario Kart tournament. Guests to see:

Re: Japan Box Office (2010), Jan. 23-24
Quote: Japanese box office revenue hit its second highest level in 2009 and passed the £2bn mark for the first time in three years.
Overall box office revenue for the year rose by 5.7% to $2.28bn from $2.1bn (Y194.84b) in 2008, according to new data from The Motion Picture Producers Association of Japan (Eiren). Admissions rose by 5.5% to 169.3 million compared to 160.5m in the previous year.
The average ticket price increased slightly to $13.46 (Y1217) from $13.42 (Y1214) in 2008. However, the standard walk-in price remains at $19.90 (Y1800) for adults, making Japan the most expensive country in the world to see a movie.
Local films still account for more than half of the market at 56.9%, although it has fallen back from 59.5% last year; while Hollywood films and other imported release increase their share by 2.9%. Revenue from local films totaled $1.29bn (Y117.31bn); while imported titles rose to $981.1m (Y88.73b), up from last year when Hollywood recorded its lowest earnings this decade.
Warner Brothers’ Harry Potter And The Half Blood Prince easily took the top spot for foreign releases, contributing $88.46m (Y8b) to its $193.29 (Y17.48b) take as the territory’s second most successful Hollywood studio. Red Cliff Part 2 ($61.37m), co-distributed by Toho-Towa and Avex, nudged out the first film in the series to became the most successful Asian release ever in Japan.
Twentieth Century Fox’s December release of Avatar (not included in year-end rankings) is set to be the first Hollywood film to cross the $100m mark since Pirates Of The Caribbean: World’s End in 2007.
The number of films imported into the territory dropped drastically by 74 titles to 314, versus 448 local releases, an increase of 30. Last year, saw a number of local distributors go bankrupt leading to an overall decrease in acquisitions.
Toho was the territory’s highest grossing distributor for seventh consecutive year with earnings of $724.3m (Y65.5b), its second best year ever. It released eight of the year’s top ten releases, led by overall box office champion Rookies ($94.55m).
Meanwhile, Toei and Sony Pictures both recorded their best year in the territory. Toei’s strong performance was driven by hits The Summit: A Chronicle Of Stones and the lasted Kamen Rider film, while Sony had success with Michael Jackson’s This Is It and 2012. Shochiku’s earnings remained relatively flat at $173.61m (Y15.7b), boosted by Departures’ post-Oscar extended run. http://www.screendaily.com/news/box-off ... 62.article

But, more local films are becoming mid size hits (6 more Y1b+ films than 08 had for instance), which is keeping the box office on the positive side of things. And with Avatar, One Piece, Up, and Nodame Cantabile being included in 2010 (they will total around $265m), a $150m+ film this summer (Bayside Shakedown 3), 2010 is going to be pretty huge.

Re: Japan Box Office (2010); Year End Info
As promised, some pictures from Ohayocon. Unfortunately I couldn't find any dealers with Ponyo, but I did find some nice anime/Japanese films there. In the registration line, which took a little over an hour (likely broke last year's attendence record of 8000) to get through even with pre reg, I saw some cool Links I had to get some pictures of: Before heading into the Dealers room, I spotted a Sakura, Itachi, and Tamari trio in the Artist Alley: And as soon as I enter, I see a Luffy with someone I don't recognize The Dealer's Room was packed with very little room to move. Part of it is missing from the picture though: Really cool Organization (Kingdom Hearts) cosplayers: King Barragan overlooking the crowd. Very good outfit as I'm sure it's mostly custom made/ Rangiku and Kira from Bleach. The only Rangiku I could locate. Mr. 2 from One Piece. His outfit was perfect, as was his character portrayal: Orihime and Yoruichi, both excellent: The best Grimmjow within the Dealer's Room Zabuza of Naruto. He told me if it wasn't so crowded he'd swing his sword for me. More Naruto characters (Sasuke with Karin), which was probably the fan favorite amongst cosplayers this year, imo.

[b]One of the few Dragonball characters I saw, but also one of the best overall: InyuYasha InyuYasha with Kagome (I think) A guy playing one of the students (Nanahara?) from Battle Royale. I WANT THE COLLAR I managed to locate two Nels, pre-release and after release. Very cool. And last, one of my favorites, Princess Mononoke:

nice outfits cool. The crowd really got into characters which is really cool. I hope I was one of them though I am not sure what I would have become. I love Full Metal Alchemist so maybe Alphonso or Edward

Re: Japan Box Office (2010); Year End Info
I only saw one Alphonse, but I was in the Dealer's Room or Artist Alley 90% of the time (I had $400, and I wasn't saving any of it), so I didn't see over half the people (the hotel and convention center was 3 floors). I saw a couple Edwards though, which were pretty good.
