I heard that some Japanese take it for granted and are expecting nearly $200m reservedly with low drops because of the popularity of it in Japan. Is that possible? If that's going to happen, wow!

Anyone expecting 200m is silly. Avatar's 4th weekend drop is 6x worse than Ponyo's 4th weekend drop, and Ponyo didn't exactly come close to 200m (172m). A 17% drop, while very good, doesn't suggest a gross way over $100m. Re: Japan Box Office (2010), Yearly Results; Jan. 16-17  The first full-length film adaptation of The Melancholy of Haruhi Suzumiya series suddenly topped Eiga's Most Searched for film chart today. Some might actually know about it here, I noticed a member here had a Hare Hare Yukai dance signature. News of the album was released today, but I don't think that alone would have caused such a spike (noticed the film was up 400% on imdb this week, too) Anyway, the anime is very popular, so there may be a great deal of buzz surrounding this one that hit late. It has been out for like... 5 years without a single film, so. The film opens on Feb. 6th. I don't expect more than 200 screens (if that) tops, but with it's popularity, it might be perform, on a smaller scale I'd think, to Evangelion 2.0 last summer (120 screens, Y4b or $43m) or One Piece this Dec. Avatar is still doing very, very well and is targeting $100m.
Nodame Cantabile Part 1 continues it's strong run (the film has been No.2 for 5 straight weeks now), and will clear $40m. Part II will be released on April 17th just in time for Golden Week, about a 10 day frame with many holidays when most have no work or school which begins near the end of April. Alice in Wonderland also opens on the same date.
Decent start for Where The Wild Things Are, it should reach Y1b (success mark).
Good start for Bandage in medium release. Not sure if Toho has any plans on going wider with it or not yet.
Up and One Piece are still doing their thing. Up should finish around $56/57m, but $60m isn't out of the question. And One Piece should finish around $55m.
This Is It also continues it's huge run. An official number (not "exceeding" X yen like usually reported) has been given this week (Y5,048,790,040), and Y5b was the target. I think it's run might be over due to that though, with the re-release, and all five DVD editions placing 1-5th on last week's DVD sales chart.
This week we see several openers: Sayonara itsuka, The Imaginarium of Doctor Parnassu, Oceans, Surrogates, and Haunting in Connecticut.
The latter two likely won't make the top 10 however.

Re: Japan Box Office (2010), Yearly Results; Jan. 16-17 As of 1/21, Avatar has "exceeded" Y6.3b yen (about $69m) with one day to go before heading into the 2-day. So that's roughly a $1m avg. per day this week so far. If Avatar experiences a similar drop as this past weekend, it's total after Sunday should be around $75m. Competition is beginning to appear however, with three films opening on the 22nd, but the only one providing any sort of competition would be Disney's Oceans. Earth actually opened at No.1 back in Jan. 2008 with just over $3m and went on to finish near $25m. So it's probably safe to assume Oceans will do pretty well. Then on the 23rd, Sayonara Itsuka and The Imaginarium of Doctor Parnassus open. Itsuka is receiving some strong buzz, so it should do well this weekend. Doctor Parnassus is difficult to predict because it'll depend on the screen count which I have no clue on.

If it behaves the same this coming week, it'll be around $86/87m. Hm, using similar drops for the next several weeks, it seems headed for about $110/115m. A total around there would put it a bit below the Top 10 All Time in USD, and probably Top 20 in Yen

Avatar is heading for $120 million, I'd say. The buzz still remains pretty big and the WoM is great too.

Very impressive for Avatar, it should hit $100m during the weekdays leading into it's 8th weekend.
Oceans opens higher than Earth, and despite being a 3day opener too. It should be able to surpass Earth's $25m without much trouble.
Asmik Ace handled Sayonara Itsuka well with a medium release. With the hype surrounding Miho Nakayam's return to feature film in over 12 years, and good reviews, it should have a leggy run.
Nodame Cantabile Part I continues to hold well, and should finish in the mid 40's. Part II will be released on April 17th ahead of Golden Week.
Decent for Yu-Gi-Oh's 10th Anniversary film, having the second best PTA in the Top 10.
Up has begun to lose some of it's theaters after 8 weeks, but is still doing great. Should finish with 57m or so.
One Piece: Strong World was 11th according to yahoo. I'd assume it's around $50/51m after 7 weeks.

Leaving for Ohayocon tomorrow night, friday, around 8pm and should arrive around 11pm to reg for the weekend, check into the hotel, all that good stuff. I'm hoping to find the 9-Disc Ponyo DVD Box Set that was only released in Japan last December while I'm there, as well as some other movies that will probably never be released here. Perhaps some films being released this year may be featured one some of the floors. I'll take plenty of pictures and perhaps some videos to share if they're related. Revenue from local films totaled $1.29bn (Y117.31bn); while imported titles rose to $981.1m (Y88.73b), up from last year when Hollywood recorded its lowest earnings this decade.
Warner Brothers’ Harry Potter And The Half Blood Prince easily took the top spot for foreign releases, contributing $88.46m (Y8b) to its $193.29 (Y17.48b) take as the territory’s second most successful Hollywood studio. Red Cliff Part 2 ($61.37m), co-distributed by Toho-Towa and Avex, nudged out the first film in the series to became the most successful Asian release ever in Japan.
Twentieth Century Fox’s December release of Avatar (not included in year-end rankings) is set to be the first Hollywood film to cross the $100m mark since Pirates Of The Caribbean: World’s End in 2007.
The number of films imported into the territory dropped drastically by 74 titles to 314, versus 448 local releases, an increase of 30. Last year, saw a number of local distributors go bankrupt leading to an overall decrease in acquisitions.
Toho was the territory’s highest grossing distributor for seventh consecutive year with earnings of $724.3m (Y65.5b), its second best year ever. It released eight of the year’s top ten releases, led by overall box office champion Rookies ($94.55m).
Meanwhile, Toei and Sony Pictures both recorded their best year in the territory. Toei’s strong performance was driven by hits The Summit: A Chronicle Of Stones and the lasted Kamen Rider film, while Sony had success with Michael Jackson’s This Is It and 2012. And I'm surprised 2009 beat 2008 ($2.28b vs $2.1b) by almost 6% without a film that came close to Ponyo. But, more local films are becoming mid size hits (6 more Y1b+ films than 08 had for instance), which is keeping the box office on the positive side of things. And with Avatar, One Piece, Up, and Nodame Cantabile being included in 2010 (they will total around $265m), a $150m+ film this summer (Bayside Shakedown 3), 2010 is going to be pretty huge. _________________Japan Box Office “Gods are great ... but the heart is greater. Re: Japan Box Office (2010); Year End Info As promised, some pictures from Ohayocon. Unfortunately I couldn't find any dealers with Ponyo, but I did find some nice anime/Japanese films there. In the registration line, which took a little over an hour (likely broke last year's attendence record of 8000) to get through even with pre reg, I saw some cool Links I had to get some pictures of:  Before heading into the Dealers room, I spotted a Sakura, Itachi, and Tamari trio in the Artist Alley: And as soon as I enter, I see a Luffy with someone I don't recognize The Dealer's Room was packed with very little room to move. Part of it is missing from the picture though: Really cool Organization (Kingdom Hearts) cosplayers: King Barragan overlooking the crowd. Very good outfit as I'm sure it's mostly custom made/  Rangiku and Kira from Bleach. The only Rangiku I could locate. Mr. 2 from One Piece. His outfit was perfect, as was his character portrayal: Orihime and Yoruichi, both excellent: The best Grimmjow within the Dealer's Room Zabuza of Naruto. He told me if it wasn't so crowded he'd swing his sword for me.   More Naruto characters (Sasuke with Karin), which was probably the fan favorite amongst cosplayers this year, imo.
[b]One of the few Dragonball characters I saw, but also one of the best overall: InyuYasha InyuYasha with Kagome (I think)  A guy playing one of the students (Nanahara?) from Battle Royale. I WANT THE COLLAR I managed to locate two Nels, pre-release and after release. Very cool. Re: Japan Box Office (2010); Year End Info I only saw one Alphonse, but I was in the Dealer's Room or Artist Alley 90% of the time (I had $400, and I wasn't saving any of it), so I didn't see over half the people (the hotel and convention center was 3 floors). I saw a couple Edwards though, which were pretty good.
