Reports say that in Port o Prince every second building is destroyed or so heavely damaged that it has to be completely rebuild.

Post Re: Haiti
sad we have forgotten this disaster so soon.

Official proper death toll estimates are now 200,000

I don't know if I am certain but that is the worst Natural disaster to hit the Western World since 1755 Lisbon Earthquake.

I see no evidence that people have forgot unless your measure is posts at kj and then we must realize that some of our most compassionate posters, like Argos, are not allowed to post their heartfelt and humanist views on the matter.

I was watching oeta today and they a story of a man who's wife was working at her bank when the quake hit. There was no signs of anything but they eventually heard a woman's voice beneath the rock . She had been trapped there six days with no food or water but she was alive . It was a miracle . I was so happy . It's so sad that because Haiti lacks the technical means to conduct recovery operations that who knows how many people are just dying underneath all that rubble . That woman certainly had an extremely powerful will to live to last 6 days . Hopefully more have enough strength to hang on as she did .

We just see like nearly an entire country is destroyed. Towards the Dominican Republic reports are not so bad but the rest of the country seems also heavely damaged as Port au Prince is.

Well, its not like they have strong building codes there. Hopefully with all the internation support Port au Prince and environs will be rebuilt in a much safer fashion. Its only a shame that the support couldn't have come earlier, so that such a crisis could have been averted.

I know in a lot of these poorer countries people don't have much of a choice, but I don't think I could ever live anywhere near a fault line.

Just sad.

Its not that bad if you know how to build an earthquake resistant structure. No building in Anchorage is made out of stone, no building in Anchorage is made without being ridiculously earthquake resistant, every appliance ect. is bolted to the walls of 50%-90% of all structures in anchorage, the only way to die in a quake here is to fall into a crack if the ground breaks apart.
