no, but films that have widely watched and widely praised should be recognized, and not ignored so some film that really isn't that good be praised because it has George Clonney in it.

Like it made no sense why TDK was subbed last year for what the Reader and Milk, no one could care less for the latter films, while TDK is to critics and to audiences one the best blockbuster of the decade.

I think Avatar has the Oscars lined up for sure, I can't think of a year where a major film wins best picture and directors and gets sunbed at the Oscars.

I HATE this attitude. Why is money so important to you? None of Avatar's gross is going into your account.

The Reader was actually much less acclaimed and liked than TDK so yeah I would agree there.

But The Hurt Locker, for instance, has been much more praised than Avatar. Why should it be ignored just because it is a harder sell?

It just shows the power of box office in swaying the winners.

Avatar - Best Director
Avatar - Best Picture (Drama)
Sandra Bullock - Best actress (Drama)
The Hangover - Best Picture (Comedy)

etc.

As I've been saying for quite a long time now, Sandra Bullock will win the best actress Oscar. It is very hard to ignore a film which is headed for $250 m +.

Just like it will be very hard for the Academy to ignore a film that will make $2 billion + and $650 m + domestically.

Then they should change the award titles to Most Watched Picture, Most Popular Actor, Most Read Screenplay, etc.

I am still rooting for Carey Mulligan. :P She's -so- talented. I hate the fact genuine acclaim for her performance is being drowned out by The Blind Side's money.

Well I hate your attitude that stupid films like Milk and the Reader get praised over TDK and Wall-E...

Suck on that... :funny:

Well, Mulligan's not happening.

Best she can hope for is a BAFTA win.

Avatar winning looks likely for the Oscar's.

The other winners this years are not as widely liked as lets say Slumdog Millionaire.

Up In The Air and the Hurt Locker the only other real choices are not as well liked as Slumdog.

Slumdog was an okay film but very heartwarming so it won. Those two films are really good but nothing special. With Avatar winning, this has really destroyed their momentum.

Currently we're looking at:

Picture: Avatar, with The Hurt Locker being the only possible spoiler
Director: Kathryn Bigelow, with Cameron the only alternate
Actor: Jeff Bridges (almost locked I'd say)
Actress: tie between Bullock and Streep; SAG will tell us
Supporting Actor: Christopher Waltz
Supporting Actress: Mo'Nique
Original Screenplay: Inglourious Basterds (The Hurt Locker could upset and Avatar if it really sweeps ROTK style)
Adapted Screenplay: Up in the Air

I think Best Director is unlikely for Cameron but picture looks about certain.

I am concern why A GG win means Avatar has a good shot at Oscar? Aren't they entirely different group of voters..?

Director and Actress will be a huge battle...

Between the People's choice and the Hollywood Elite's Choice.

I think Cameron only wants Best Picture really now and I think he has it, the Oscars have never sunbed a huge massive blockbuster that has already won BP awards.

I hope the Academy won't let the sloppy Globes influence their voting decisions. The Globes is a joke.

Yeah but Avatar momentum will be so huge by Oscar time...

You think the Oscar's would pull such a upset.

I actually want to see a tie between Cameron and Bigelow for Best Director. Ex-husband and wife reunion, so sweet!

Momentum is key here. You have an Academy which is desperate to appeal to the mainstream that they'll go to great lengths such as 10 nominees, and other changes over the last few years.

When you have a $2 billion + film, or a performance that has driven a film to a likely $250 m + gross, its very difficult to ignore.

Usually these types of wins help raise awareness. Raising awareness on Avatar at this point is pretty unnecessary. It's been playing well everywhere more or less.

For other films with more niche audiences, it could certainly help. Precious could get a slight bump. I'm thinking The Blind Side, as huge as it is, will get a slight bump as well. It played very well in the middle of the country and there might be people who otherwise would not have wanted to see a football related movie, who will see it now that the role is getting so much awards attention.

Smaller films it will help for sure.
