I still remember reading Curse of the Golden Flower (love Zhang Yimou) breaking the record. :p

And good grief, just noticed Avatar's screen count is more than double Transformers 2.

Yeah i know, that was only like 4-5 years ago. This market has grown so much in a matter of just 3 years, big grosses now just like Russia.

Give it another 5 years and the standard would be $50m for any blockbuster with the uber ones like Transformers grossing in excess of $75m.

Here's some food for thought.....Avatar opens in Italy this coming weekend, it's last market.

Warner Bros Entertainment Italia’s Io Loro E Lara scored a number one launch in Italy, grossing a worthy $5.8m from 662 to stand at $11m following its mid-week launch.

Spiderman 3's opening record of $15.1m looks shaky indeed.

When will someone provide the analysis of how its killing in every country?
This doesn't make any sense considering the movie isn't that great either.
What does it have? I have no words for it.
What the fuck, seriously.
How is it that everyone wants to see it????
100m in France ? WTF?!

Well, 3D and Imax is playing a major role. Up and Ice Age 3's overseas gross in 3D was 40-45%, whereas Avatar's is 65% or so. So that's the biggest factor, but it's certainly not the only reason. Guess away at the other reasons.

It's pretty simple: Most people who have seen AVATAR like it and recommend others to watch it...

But many movies have been liked before and most are stronger than Pocahontas 2: Special Effects

LOL, this movie is definately not as good as the gross suggests, I think Titanic is more deserving of beating Avatar.

What a clown. Can't you not fathom that other people might feel differently? The movie is well loved around the world. Deal with it.

Despite heavy snowstorms (some areas in Germany were declared disaster areas) AVATAR dropped just 16 %

All estimates in admissions:

625,000 4th weekend (-16 %)
5,085,000 25 day total (=93 % of TITANIC's 25 day total)

Looks to me like by next Sunday the total will be around 5.9m admissions (more than 4 out of 6 STAR WARS films) which translates into the same b.o. as IA3 (in Euros)...

Post Re: Avatar (INTL.) - $1.335bn Worldwide (#2)
Faced with direct competition from Sherlock Holmes' solid €642,210 ($933,748) opening weekend, Avatar dropped a whopping 12.7% this weekend in Holland, earning a mere €1,120,522 (approx. $1,628,827), and raising its total to a so-so €8.140.139 ($11,765,888).

...

:funny:

Yeah, I can't really speak negatively about that at all. That's a great hold.

Comparing it to Harry Potter and the Half Blood Prince: HP6 had $12,398,911 throughout the same point, coming off a $866,682 weekend (and a 37% drop). Considering HP6 opened to €2,538,000 compared to Avatar's € 1,151,965 it's safe to say Avatar's been catching up FAST.

On the all-time chart, Avatar is about to devour its first Harry Potter film, with at least two more (Goblet of Fire at #14 and Order of the Phoenix at #13) in its sights, but not before it takes down Ice Age 3 to become #2 of 2009 here.

17 FINDING NEMO € 8.761.527,00
18 HARRY POTTER A/T PRISONER OF AZKABAN € 8.344.969,00
19 FLODDER IN AMERIKA € 8.305.214,00
20 AVATAR € 8.140.139,00
21 DA VINCI CODE, THE € 8.089.460,00
22 CASINO ROYALE € 8.005.821,00
23 SCHINDLER'S LIST € 7.749.828,00

Considering how well it held against Sherlock, and how weak the coming months look, this has a really solid chance of surpassing HP6 to take the 2009 crown. Considering this is neither a local film, Harry Potter or Lord of the Rings, I find that pretty impressive.
