2012 is a huge hit no doubt about it.
I think domestically people don't like these kinds of films anymore, not because it sucked. A lot of crappy films over perform in the US...

In France, the latest round realized $11.7 million from 1,111 sites, with the market cume topping the $100 million mark ($110.5 million), the first offshore territory to do so. Germany generated $9.9 million from 994 screens for a cume of $73.4 million. The U.K. cume stands at $66.8 million thanks to a $7.5 million weekend from 470 locations. (Severe winter weather in the U.K. inhibited boxoffice generally in the market.) Other big market cumes include Australia ($57.8 million), Russia ($69.5 million), Spain ($60 million), South Korea ($54.5 million) and Japan ($50.8 million). http://www.hollywoodreporter.com/hr/con ... 2a2c62665b

Quite a sizeable drop in France (wasn't it around $20m last weekend?).

No. The total after last weekend was $35m, so it added roughly $15m over the past week. It's a very good hold considering the week before it added about $21m, so it's only about a 30% week to week drop. Avatar broke the 4b mark heading into the weekend. Now, no idea how much over 4b it was, so that could mean as low as 43 or as high as I'd say 46. I'm sure it was closer to the high end though because I can't see the weekend staying flat.

It'll be around $100-$150 million short of Titanic's OS total by next weekend. That's fuckin' insane.

Holy Crap, this is going to slaughter Titanic, who ever thought this could happen. I certainly didn't. The international grosses are amazing. With Italy still to come.

Corpse wrote: If the extraordinary heights of Titanic’s final box office once seemed unattainable, Avatar proved it is more than up for the challenge internationally at least as it climbed 4.5% in its fourth weekend to gross a further $143m and raise the tally to an estimated $906.2m. Active on 14,839 screens in 111 countries, the Fox International juggernaut easily secured its place in history as the second biggest international launch behind James Cameron’s legendary romance from 1997. Titanic amassed $1.24bn overseas and at this rate Avatar has a real shot at overtaking it. Combined with $429m in North America, where it also stayed top for the fourth weekend, Avatar’s global tally stands at $1.331bn. Weekend business was powered by a truly astonishing result from China, which delivered the biggest opening week in history on $40.2m from 2,474 screens and the biggest single day at the Chinese box office of $8.3m recorded on Saturday January 9. France must also take the plaudits as the country became the first outside of North America to cross $100m and currently stands at $100.5m following an $11.7m weekend haul. Avatar ranks as the fifth biggest release behind Bienvenue Chez Les Ch’tis, Titanic, Asterix: Cleopatra and Les Visiteurs. IMAX screens generated a further $4.6m and combined with the North American cumulative total to propel Avatar to $91m worldwide, easily passing The Polar Express’ $71m final total to become the biggest grossing global IMAX release. IMAX Filmed Entertained president and CEO Greg Foster said he expected to cross $100m this week. Sony Pictures Releasing International’s disaster movie 2012 crossed $600m thanks to a $1.9m session that raised the cumulative gross to $600.7m and $40.5m in Japan. The romantic comedy Did You Hear About The Morgans? grossed $8.4m from 1,885 in 18 markets to boost the early tally to $15.6m. It opened in Germany on $2.3m from 500 screens. Universal/UPI’s It’s Complicated grossed $8m from 1,700 venues in 17 territories to raise the romantic comedy’s early number to $23.4m and the result was driven by a strong $3.3m launch in second place in Australia from 240 sites. The Prince And The Frog added $5.5m from 3,187 screens in 25 territories for $56m through Walt Disney Studios Motion Pictures International. Old Dogs grossed $2.5m from 952 in 15 for $30m, while the sci-fi thriller Surrogates was back in action in Italy and Chile, adding a combined $1.5m for $73m. A Christmas Carol added $1.2m from 1,250 in 40 for $185.7m, and Up stands at $430m and is the second biggest Pixar performer overseas. Full report to follow. http://www.screendaily.com/news/distrib ... 04.articleMassive, and well done to 2012 for crossing $600m. Last year was amazing for international grosses. Really a major improvement and huge growth.

An evolution - Some thoughts from the beginning of the thread:Box wrote: Arch, I doubt this will crack $500m worldwide. I hope I'm wrong though. Archangel wrote: $500m is at the very low end I think. Many theater owners reported to me that WOM is excellent and people are already buying tickets for their second viewing. I wouldn't rule it out that it comes close to IA3... Yes, I have, I loved it and WoM will be very good (I went with four people and three of them loved it). I am also going to see it again and maybe even a third time (maybe). But it is opening with 800,000 or so...so just excellent WoM isn't going to cut it. I mean many films have great WoM but ti approach even 7 million admissions (which I suppose what it'll roughly need to pass IA3 in gross) is quite a stretch. In admissions it's not passing it either. mark66 wrote: Just two years ago KEINOHRHASEN opened with 451,058 tickets on its way to 6.3m the week before xmas. I'm pretty sure that AVATAR will do more than $700m internationally... and I'm pretty confident that AVATAR will become the No. 2 grosser worldwide... mark66 wrote: Archangel wrote: Mark, what do you think it'll end up grossing in Germany? over 5m adms. now? What do you see until January 10th and altogether? Opening week was 1.5m admissions after a 0.9m opening weekend... Hmm, around 3.8-3.9 million until January 10th and probably around 5.5 million overall, depending on Cloudy's exposure. I don't think this film will benefit that much from the Oscars unless it actually wins BP.

I don't believe this performance. It's seriously mind-boggling. Why it's succeeding on such levels we'll never know for sure... James Cameron's name? Most likely explanation although weakest beforehand.

Despite heavy snowstorms (some areas in Germany were declared disaster areas) AVATAR dropped just 16 %
All estimates in admissions:
625,000 4th weekend (-16 %) 5,085,000 25 day total (=93 % of TITANIC's 25 day total)
