Here's the confirmation. http://www.variety.com/article/VR111801 ... id=13&cs=1The normally sluggish January box office came alive as 20th Century Fox's "Avatar" remained a powerhouse, grossing an estimated $48.5 million domestically and another $143 million overseas for a worldwide cume of $1.34 billion in only its fourth frame.

 Re: Avatar (INTL.) - $1,175,636,010 Worldwide (#2)
Avatar should easily be near 1.050 billion overseas next weekend
(70 million from weekdays + 75 million weekend)
$1,056,000,000 overseas 480 million domestic =$1,536,000,000 WW by next Sunday...
HOLY CRAP!
As crasy as it sounds it looks certain

No, i refuse to get all excited. This... this must be a mistake. I'll first wait for other sources to confirm that number. EDIT: Hmmm, Variety seems to run the same numbers. In that case: HOLY SHIT!!!

 Re: Avatar (INTL.) - $1,175,636,010 Worldwide (#2)
I think Italy will open next weekend and first reports look like it's going to be huge opening.
But something is wrong with the numbers. If it made $143M OS over the weekend that would mean 924M total. But 924M + 429M = $1,353B. We lost 13M somewhere.

With such epic grosses things will get confused.
I think now Avatar easily is the 2nd biggest film of all time overseas even with inflation and all that I would imagine.

I came up with a new word: avatacular. In the future when a movie exceeds all expectations one will say the movie is doing avatacular.

 Re: Avatar (INTL.) - $1,175,636,010 Worldwide (#2)
With its current ww total, and a $650 m domestic total, Avatar would be just $291 m away from Titanic's worldwide gross even if Avatar didn't make another dollar overseas. Considering Avatar's $143 m overseas weekend, it looks headed for $2 billion +, and perhaps $2.1 billion or so. Though too early to tell...

 Re: Avatar (INTL.) - $1,175,636,010 Worldwide (#2)
If the extraordinary heights of Titanic’s final box office once seemed unattainable, Avatar proved it is more than up for the challenge internationally at least as it climbed 4.5% in its fourth weekend to gross a further $143m and raise the tally to an estimated $906.2m. Active on 14,839 screens in 111 countries, the Fox International juggernaut easily secured its place in history as the second biggest international launch behind James Cameron’s legendary romance from 1997. Titanic amassed $1.24bn overseas and at this rate Avatar has a real shot at overtaking it. Combined with $429m in North America, where it also stayed top for the fourth weekend, Avatar’s global tally stands at $1.331bn. Weekend business was powered by a truly astonishing result from China, which delivered the biggest opening week in history on $40.2m from 2,474 screens and the biggest single day at the Chinese box office of $8.3m recorded on Saturday January 9. France must also take the plaudits as the country became the first outside of North America to cross $100m and currently stands at $100.5m following an $11.7m weekend haul. Avatar ranks as the fifth biggest release behind Bienvenue Chez Les Ch’tis, Titanic, Asterix: Cleopatra and Les Visiteurs. IMAX screens generated a further $4.6m and combined with the North American cumulative total to propel Avatar to $91m worldwide, easily passing The Polar Express’ $71m final total to become the biggest grossing global IMAX release. IMAX Filmed Entertained president and CEO Greg Foster said he expected to cross $100m this week. Sony Pictures Releasing International’s disaster movie 2012 crossed $600m thanks to a $1.9m session that raised the cumulative gross to $600.7m and $40.5m in Japan. The romantic comedy Did You Hear About The Morgans? grossed $8.4m from 1,885 in 18 markets to boost the early tally to $15.6m. It opened in Germany on $2.3m from 500 screens. Universal/UPI’s It’s Complicated grossed $8m from 1,700 venues in 17 territories to raise the romantic comedy’s early number to $23.4m and the result was driven by a strong $3.3m launch in second place in Australia from 240 sites. The Prince And The Frog added $5.5m from 3,187 screens in 25 territories for $56m through Walt Disney Studios Motion Pictures International. Old Dogs grossed $2.5m from 952 in 15 for $30m, while the sci-fi thriller Surrogates was back in action in Italy and Chile, adding a combined $1.5m for $73m. A Christmas Carol added $1.2m from 1,250 in 40 for $185.7m, and Up stands at $430m and is the second biggest Pixar performer overseas. Full report to follow. http://www.screendaily.com/news/distrib ... 04.article

China's opening week is incredible. Any idea how many of the 2474 screens are IMAX/3D?

Crazy! Goes to show you what happens when you put a love story and action scenes in the same movie.
Plus, I do have to give Cameron credit for really taking the time to build a convincing space - an entire world. Even with all the Pocahontas plot-line knock-offs.

 Re: Avatar (INTL.) - $1,175,636,010 Worldwide (#2)
Great opening in China! Huge huge total is in store for Avatar there!
Also congrats to 2012 on passing $600 m overseas! Funny that a $600 m gross is only good enough for #4 this year. Last year the #1 overseas gross was $469.5 m from IJ4. I think if 2012 were released in 2011, probably could have done $750 m overseas with inflation, and being closer to the year 2012...Domestically as well would have been huge being that close to 2012...
