Well. It still has Chinese New Year just around the corner. It's a little further away this year, Valentine's Day to be exact. The move made it a couple of days closer to the release of Confucius, Chow Yun Fat's latest film, while creating a bigger vacuum for the period since Dec 18th, the day Bodyguards and Assassins opened. Doesn't make much sense. There is a poster over at BOM from China who is claiming that the government there is trying to bury the film with the date move. I have no clue how much veracity there is to that claim, though. lol what? you don't bury a film by moving it by two days. maybe cut its theatre count by 99% or something. I can't imagine what the authorities find threatening about the film. I mean, it's a pretty dumb movie. But then, they banned WALL-E Well if there was a conspiracy against the movie, then the easiest thing would be to ban the goddamn movie and come up with some excuse. Moving it 2 -days is not going to mean much in the bigger scheme of things. Be thankful it's even opening in China when Box said above, Wall-E didn't even get that chance.

He won't have 3D, though. Sherlock Holmes opens in Russia on December 31st, expect a massive opening if it turns out to be a blockbuster.

Keyser Söze wrote: Archangel wrote: Box wrote: Oh, yes, well #3 is obviously a given.
Is that the biggest gap between #1 and #2 and #2 and #3 in any market, anywhere? I guess except for Titanic in North America, before TDK... Good qestion, out of the major markets, the gap has really closed considerably on Titanic. In US$ terms LOTRs are the current record holders or #1-#3 in Scandinavia and most of the middle-Europe countries (especially ROTK in US$ and FOTR in local admissions). Avatar is just a small step below LOTR/HP/Pirates in these regions currently. Mamma Mia of course took down Titanic in the UK. Welcome to the Sticks took down Titanic in France. Gap is massive though. In Spain, ROTK got within $4m of Titanic's $44m, but Avatar is a lock to raise the record there to over $50m. In Australia, Titanic is #2 in US$ behind Crocodile Dundee anyway, with ROTK close behind. The gap between #1 and #3 in US$ terms currently is only $3m. Avatar should run away with the record and be the first movie ever to cross US$40m in Australia. Titanic's Australian total looks to be in jeopardy as well at $57m. Russian record as you know was gone ages ago, first by T3, then ROTK...until now where a local and Ice Age 3/Shrek 3 stakes claim. Avatar will beat all of them comfortably. Italy probably is the other country that has the largest gap. Titanic at $72.2m leads Life Is Beautiful at $56.3m. ROTK and Da Vinci code are the next best foreigners at around the $37m mark In South America, the Mexican record has fallen 3 times since Titanic. First by Spiderman 1, then Spiderman 3 and now by Ice Age 3 at just over $40m. Avatar is not tracking strong enough at this stage to beat Ice Age 3 but it could get very close i think in the end. Brazil is another market where the gap is massive. TItanic at $67m leads Ice Age 3 at around $45m. Avatar is tracking within $8m of Ice Age 3 after 2 weekends but Titanic's total is out of reach. In asia, China as you know already belongs to 2012 and Transformers. Avatar judging from the other markets like Taiwan and Hong Kong should challenge both of those sets of movies. Titanic still lords over Taiwan (almost doubling the next placegetters Jurassic Park 2 and ROTK in local dollars). In Hong Kong, Armageddon took down Titanic in 1998 $21m vs. $14.8m, however, since then, only the local pics by Stephen Chow got closest at $7.8m (both Kung Fu Hustle and Sholin Soccer). In Japan, Titanic had a 4 year reign at the top with a massive gap of $60m over the next best movie at the time Princess Monoke...until Spirited Away trumped Titanic $234m vs. $220m. Since then, only Harry Potter 1/2 managed to make any inroads at the upper echelon for foreign releases, while the locals faired much better with Howl's Moving Castle the closest at $188m, and Bayside Shakedown 2, Ponyo On The Cliff both at $165m. In the smaller Asian countries such as Malaysia, Singapore, Philippines...etc, it's mainly a split between Transformers 2 and Spiderman 3 for the US$ records. great write up. i hope avatar beats titanic in italy. that should be enough for 900m+ os. i am having a bad feeling about china. hope it is not a disaster bcos of nefarious reasons. Thanks

Don't see it being much of a threat only for a select few countries, Russia of course.

Sherlock might steal the 2D prints since they aren't selling and cinemas won't keep them long, but that shouldn't hurt Avatar that much since it's making most of it's money in 3D.

James Cameron’s sci-fi powerhouse played on 14,686 screens in 108 markets. Combined with the $212.7m North American take, Avatar has amassed $625.9m worldwide.
* International business was driven by impressive holds and Fox’s highest non-franchise launch in Japan on $14.5m (¥1.3bn) from 749 screens, which was also Fox’s fourth highest launch behind the Star Warsfranchise. The 283 3D screen count comprised 38% of the entire count and accounted for 75% of box office. * In second weekend holdovers, Avatar grossed a further $21.8m from 1,114 in France for $51.7m, $13.6m from 1,329 in Russia for $44.2m, $12.8m from 1,138 in Germany for $34.2m, $12.5m from 800 in Spain for $28.8m, and $6.5m from 735 in South Korea for $23.4m. It is Fox’s highest and the industry’s fourth highest Hollywood release in South Korea after ten days. * The film added $6.1m from 496 in the UK for $28.4m and $5.6m from 1,478 in Mexico for $15.1m and is now the second highest industry release of 2009 behind Ice Age 3. * Elsewhere Avatar added $5.3m from 654 in Brazil after a 5% climb to stand at $13.9m following the highest second weekend in industry history, and added $2.8m from 71 in Hong Kong following a 44% rise to stand at $6.9m. It is the third highest Fox release ever and the seventh highest industry release after 11 days. * Latest figures put Taiwan at $7.8m, Holland at $6m, India at $10.7m, Sweden at $5.3m, Switzerland at $4.4m, and Singapore at $4.2m, where Avatar is the second highest Fox release ever behind Titanic on SGD 5.3m. * In other records, Avatar overtook Titanic in Malaysia to become the highest Fox release in history on $3.5m, and overtook Ice Age 3 in Indonesia to become Fox’s biggest release ever on $2.9m..
The film grossed $3.367m on IMAX screens in a new IMAX record. So far Avatar has amassed $11.3m internationally and should overtake the $15m record within two or three days. The global IMAX take for Avatarstands at $35m. So it did only $1.4M this weekend in India. Yep it isn't beating 2012, Titanic and SM3 in India but some mega film killed it there. Looking at these numbers again, it had good increases over estimates in France, Netherlands, India..though was down in Spain by over $1m.

If only there were more 3D screens globally otherwise it would be pretty much the same. They will definately shed the 2D theatres first since Avatar plays better anyways on 3D

It's good that it's playing 73% of copies in 3D and 27% in 2D in Poland. Should allow the movie to have a very long run

Reading through all the new posts here is such a joy when most of them are by Archangel and his sexy skateboard avatar. Still no official weekend numbers from the Netherlands... As long as the Dutch Federation of Cinema ( http://www.nfcstatistiek.nl, http://www.nfcstatistiek.nl/top20weekend.pdf for the weekend chart) doesn't update, I'm skeptical. I'd like to believe it actually did increase over 50% this weekend, but it's just... SO much! I really wish I had another reliable source for the local Box Office. ¬_¬

UK will probably rebound. If theaters were closed it's obvious numbers weren't going to be the best ones.
