Hmm that would be 220k admissions. Not bad but expected more. It's a lock for big jump next weekend. It will do Passion of the Christ run, which is okay with me.

Doing those numbers would equate to Titanic type grosses.

I remember Titanic so well.

Here, the local theatre gets one film at a time, and will keeo it for one or two weeks (3-4 if the film is a big blockbuster), I can't recall any film staying here for more than a month. Anyway, we had Titanic for two weeks before dropping it, but then the next month we actually got it back, and didn't drop it until 4 MONTHS later. It was the only movie in town for 1/3 of 1998. The theatre became sort of a hang out spot for everyone. I know I had to see it close to 10x, if not more, and I was 10. I even wore the necklace around wherever I went that year. ^___^ It became like, "Hey, wanna go see Titanic again tonight?" for everyone.

The only other movie experiences that came close happened the following year. Pokemon the 1st Movie and Star Wars. I went to watch Pokemon every day it was here so I could keep getting the cards, and I did the same with Star Wars for a week.

Now I don't even go to the theatre more than maybe 7 or 8 times a year.

some comparisons to RT's report....one thing though, the current 2nd weekend record is held by Shrek at just over AUD$8.5m. ScreenDaily is reporting $8.4m for Avatar.

I see $50m being locked.

In terms of most memorable movies experiences for me....

1) Lord of the Rings: ROTK (massive crowds, they were even showing in a smallish size cinema, tears all around)

2) Lord of the Rings: TTT (absolute huge crowds and they rolled out the red carpet for this even when it's not a Gold Class/Director's Suite cinema, clapping at the end)

3) The Matrix: Reloaded (massive crowds stretching around the block, huge buzz and excitement. I enjoyed the movie)

4) Lord of the Rings: FOTR (little did i know that this was going to turn into the phenom that it would be. I was just expecting a movie better than HP1. FOTR didn't blow me away at first, but then something happened afterwards. I can't stop thinking about the movie, I started to read more into this and the more I did the more i was immersed and there's no turning back)

5) Titanic - I could remember crying to this and then can't stop thinking about Leo (ahem, I mean the movie).

6) The Dark Knight - One of those movies where you felt everything was done so well it's almost like perfect

7) Avatar - The first time i saw a movie in 3D, it was awesome. Movie was very good and had some excellent momments. 3D is the future.

8) The Phantom of the Opera - This is the movie i saw the most in cinemas, something like 6x (even more than any of the individual LOTR pics which i saw 5x). I love the songs, I love the romantic escapism. You could remember the little thread i created to devote my love for this movie. Some 170 pages of pure obsession).

9) Batman Forever - The first real blockbuster i enjoyed. I saw it twice with my cousins because we enjoyed it so much. I was very young and the whole merchandise thing was mega. I really loved Jim Carey's performance in this, still to this day as well.

10) Transformers - All around romp. I'm a huge Transformers fan and the awesomenss and fun of the first installment made me salivate more. The same feeling could be said for the original X-Men, though i would say Transformers was better than X1.

THE JUNGLE BOOK grossed 88m Euros over five different releases, so it's next to impossible to determine the exchange rate into US-$... But b.o. wise it is still No. 2 after all those years...

I'm not discounting it's achievements but it's really not comparable, 5 different releases and was so far back there's no relevance anymore. We're in a different age now. The same way these crop of Top 10 will not compare to the Top 10 in 2050.

I wouldn't compare OW of 2012 to OW of Avatar. 2012 had 5 Day opening in November with first day being an Independence Day, which help it a lot, while Avatar opened on Christmas Day ( second worse weekend of the year after Easter weekend ). OW above 200k admission in December in Poland is very impressive. Biggest OW in December has made 150k adm. and it was after Christmas.

So around $50m seem possible. At the rate it is going it could outdo TF2.
