•In second weekend holdovers, Avatar grossed a further $18.5m (€12.4m) from 1,114 in France after 5% slip for $48.4m (€32.4m), $12.1m (€8.1m) from 790 in Spain after an 11% climb for $29.9m (€20m), $11.8m (€7.9m) from 1,495 in Germany after a 20% fall for $32.3m (€21.7m), $7.6m (AUD8.4m) in Australia after a 30% fall for $26m (AUD28.5m), and $7.2m (SKW 8.4bn) from 735 in South Korea after a 5% climb for $29.5m (KRW 34.4bn). It is Fox’s highest and the industry’s fourth highest Hollywood release in South Korea after ten days.
•The film added $6m (£3.6m) from 496 sites in the UK after a 45% tumble for $29.6m (£18.2m) and it should be noted some theatres were closed on Christmas Eve and Christmas Day. Mexico generated a further $6m from 1,478 after a 17% climb for $15.5m and Avataris now the second highest industry release of 2009 behind Ice Age 3.
•Elsewhere Avatar added $5.3m from 648 in Brazil after a 5% climb to stand at $12.6m following the highest second weekend in industry history, and added $2.8m from 68 in Hong Kong following a 44% rise to stand at $6.2m. It is the third highest Fox release ever and the seventh highest industry release after 11 days.
•Latest figures put Taiwan at $8.7m, Holland at $4.9m, India at $7.9m, Sweden at $5.2m, Switzerland at $4.2m, Singapore at $3.8m, where Avatar is the second highest Fox release ever behind Titanic on SGD 5.3m.
•In other records, Avatar overtook Titanic in Malaysia to become the highest Fox release in history on $3.19m (MYR 10.8m), and scored the industry and Fox’s second biggest weekend in Chile on $1.2m from 125 screens for a $2.7m running total. It overtook Ice Age 3 in Indonesia to become Fox biggest release ever on $2.4m (IDR 22.9bn).
The film grossed $3.367m on IMAX screens in a new IMAX record. So far Avatar has amassed $11.3m internationally and should overtake the $15m record within two or three days. The global IMAX take for Avatarstands at $35m.

I don't understand, almost every market shows a slight increase except for the UK, so how come it fell 12% this weekend, especially with China opening...

Some awesome numbers (vive la France!!!!!) but what's with the Brits? Aren't UK numbers pretty bad despite some theaters not playing on the 24th & 25th? The total there is less than Germany's and movies generally do less in Germany (bar Ice Age). If it doesn't increase like 50% at least next weekend UK may turn into a disappointment... :(

I just noticed $6.0m in GB would be less than ALVIN ($8.7m)...

UK is very disappointing.

India is also disappointing. I thought it did $8.6M in first week based on the article that I read. That means it should be at 10.5-11M including the weekend.

Japan's opening isn't anything special as well.

:tears:

I think both Alvin and Sherlock hurt it really bad. Sherlock did like 5M in two days

Maybe Britishers didn't like Avatar that much

May I remind you that most openings last week were nothing special (including the U.S.A.) and it's all about LEGS, LEGS, LEGS...

umm the Legs aren't good in UK and if that total for India is right then that means it completely collapsed this weekend but it still doesn't make sense because based on that article that I posted it should be at 8.6M for first week. This 7.9M including second weekend is crap.

I think actuals will be higher no doubt

It says SOME theaters were closed. And anyway, Alvin beating Avatar there is a disgrace! :disgust:

UK had so much potential, it's the 2nd biggest OS market behind Japan... :tears:

Come on Brits, show me next weekend you can do better!

Don't worry about that drop in the UK, there are barely any theatres open on Christmas day here. It's just not a done thing to go see a film, everyone is with family etc.

I remember in 2005 Kong's second weekend, christmas eve was saturday, christmas day sunday and it dropped something rediculous like 80% that weekend, people wrote it off. Opening weekend was £6,944,740, second weekend £1,928,032. It went on to finish with about £30million.

Dailies will be very strong for Avatar from here on.

KK and Avatar shouldn't be brought up in the same sentence. KK was a major BO disappointment. Avatar has already beaten KK in North America and overseas i.e. worldwide
