Holiday or not and weekdays aside, Avatar's second weekend definitely is impressive. I don't get the hype at all... but I'm loving the box office.

No one really has mentioned it but Alvin did pretty fantastic as well, especially considering how Xmas Day isn't usually as big for films like it and the following day historically sees a big bump. It has a great chance of clearing 75M for 5 days.

Re: Friday Numbers & Early Weekend Estimates
How do you get $82m off a $23.5m Friday? It seems like so many Saturdays have been weak after gargantuan Fridays during the holiday season the past decade, so I wouldn't be surprised if this weekend is not as strong as everyone thinks it will be 1998 pattern or not. Monday is not a holiday in the US, most got Thurs. and Fri off.
Avatar doesn't have much more room to increase in daily performance unless 2D screen attendance improves vastly. It won't get over $30m today unless, I am completely wrong about 3D/IMAX capicity for this film.

Last Saturday AVATAR did $25.5m with a snowstorm going on in the Northeast which cost a couple of millions according to the studio...

You get 82M when Avatar will increase 40% on Saturday and drop 20% on Sunday. That's what Fox is hoping for.

The Sunday drop makes sense; the Saturday increase, not so much.

I knew Sherlock would be $200M+ big. Avatar is even bigger than expected. It can go anywhere at this point. $500M+ is assured.

Re: Friday Numbers & Early Weekend Estimates
I want Avatar to win the weekend with $70+M and Sherlock to be #2 with $65+M. But if the sherlock sell outs are any indication it will win the weekend

Incredibly bad writing. 2 Hours of nothing happening. The second film was based on the least liked book of the series while the third film is based on the most popular book of the series. So don't count on the third film suffering.

First -- isn't Breaking Dawn the least liked book? Second -- what does this have to do with people who haven't read the books?

Is Sherlock Holmes a lock for $200+ million with a $65-70 million opening, though? WoM doesn't seem to be great

Re: Friday Numbers & Early Weekend Estimates
From Nafabio - wont be able to give numbers but AVATAR is enjoying a very healthy bump up today. Sherlock and Alvin are not as nutty at they were yesterday {nm}. Avatar will increase and Holmes may drop a little. (Sidenote) - I find it strange how Alvin isn't experiancing any increases today since it's selling out alot here than it was yesterday.

Assuming a 70 million opening, a multiplier under 2.86 would lead to a total under 200 million. For comparisons sake I Am Legend got a 3.32 multiplier but it had better WOM (B+ Yahoo) and the entire holiday season to make money. Granted there are less than 1500 reviews on Yahoo, but I think it's very possible that it misses 200 million unless that Yahoo grade starts increasing in a hurry.

Great for both Sherlock and Avatar
Pretty good bump for Alvin over the early numbers, it can do 50+. I know notfabio said it wasn't doing anything special today or whatever, but yesterday he also said Alvin wasn't far ahead of It's Complicated, yet it's Friday is 2x as much. It may just be a film that isn't doing well in his area.
Pretty blah for Nine.

I agree. Alvin didn't sellout a single theatre yesterday in my area, but has sold out quite a few today.

I don't know much about Indian movies, but is Friday's $550,000 in 120 theaters for 3 IDIOTS a record for an Indian movie?

fucking princess and the frog. shittiest performance this year. i'm done with it.
fantastic for sherlock and avatar, if it increases, holy shit, if it doesn't being above 70m is mind blowing. hopefully sherlock won't drop on saturday but it most likely will. damn great weekend wonder what New Year's will be like.

I found out that it did $ 2 million (Rs 10 crore) in overseas markets like the US, Canada, the UK and UAE on friday!! By sunday it most likely will be around $5M (20+ crores) for 3 day weekend which is definitely the biggest. This is breaking records in India as well. Infact, WOM is much better than Ghajini so it has very good chance of beating that movie. This weekend has been awesome for all movies except maybe nine and tpatf
