 Re: Avatar (INTL.)
$100m would be awesome, but I'm still cautious at the moment, at least until more numbers are released. Mainly because of big Hollywood film openings the past few years which all failed to get to $100m (Spider-Man 3 got the biggest 5-day ever with 26.6m, but only finished in the mid 60's. Indy IV brings in 13.4m over the 2-day, finishes in the low 60's. Harry Potter 5 opened huge with 18.6m over 3-days, but didn't reach $90m. And one of the last $100m Hollywood films, ROTK, opened to almost $15m over 2-days and just barely got there.) Avatar will be better received than most recent big Hollywood films, and while the opening day is great (don't know if holiday hurt, helped, or did nothing to it), I don't think it's high enough to guarantee $100m without knowing more numbers. I'd rather play it safe right now and be surprised. And if it would fail to reach $100m, a total of 70, 80, 90 is certainly nothing to be disappointed about, it'd still be astounding.
If it does do $100m though, that is going to give Japan two $100m films this year. I t hink Rookies is going to be counted. Variety had it at $99m a few weeks back, but a recent Variety article talking about Hollywood films still struggling mentioned local films are doing better each year, and that Rookies raked in $100m.

The yen is at 91.6 US dollar rate. In May, 2008, it was at 104. Don't discount the steep rise in the yen's value against the dollar. This will help Avatar in dollar terms big time.

3 Idiots has started on a historic note in India. early 6 AM shows were 80-90% packed. Overall day will be 90-100% sold out shows.
With this start I fully expect Avatar to crash this weekend in India unfortunately. No chance of recovering.

That is true, though it hasn't helped Hollywood films much this year (only HP6 and This Is It being in the Top 10 of the year), in fact, they are down sharply in yen once again this year, and probably in USD overall too. Potter 6 did beat Potter 5 by a few $million, but also lost over 1 billion in yen to it. And after you look at HP6's $93m and This Is It's $49m totals this year, the third biggest Hollywood film was Angels and Demons which grossed a mediocre $34m (good for the film, but very poor for it's ranking). There is still Up with plenty left in the tank, and of course Avatar. I just don't want people to be disappointed if Avatar "only" finishes with 80m or something. Ice Age 3 lost something like 80% of Ice Age 2's audience. Transformers 2 lost no less than 25% of Transformers audience. Terminator 4 lost well over 50% of Terminator 3's audience. There's also Night at the Museum and others who didn't come close to matching what their predecessors brought in.

 Re: Avatar (INTL.)
Here's some food for thought while we await Thursdays numbers. Combining the 37 million OS and 16.4 million domestically, AVATAR made 53.4 million Worldwide on Wednesday.
Considering that the next week until January 3rd is holidays in most countries, plus the open of the film in china still to come, it wouldn't be unthinkable that AVATAR could average 45 million over the course of the next 11 days. For all those of you not mathematically inclined, that's 495 million WW in just 11 days.
Add that to the 381 it already has, and it could be at 876 by Jan. 3rd. Awesome!!
