 Re: Best Actor 2009
My personal view: Frontrunners 1. George Clooney- Up In the Air 2. Morgan Freeman- Invictus Likely Candidates 3. Daniel Day Lewis- Nine 4. Colin firth- A Single Man
Just don't know much after that. I think those four are very likely at this point though.

 Re: Best Actor 2009
idk, from all the talk I'm hearing about single man, it seems the overall cast is great but there is no real stand-out. I haven't heard any buzz to implicate that his role is really grabbing eyes, but maybe it won't really need to.

Bridges is definitely picking up a lot of steam for Crazy Heart. I think Clooney, Firth, and him are locks at this point.

Right now I'm thinking it's Freeman, Clooney, Firth, Renner and Bridges. Daniel Day Lewis being the 6th-spot candidate right now.

 Re: Best Actor 2009
Yeah, Bridges has a good shot for CRAZY HEART. There is buzz about his performance, and it's from Fox Searchlight. Last year they scored Mickey Rourke a nomination for THE WRESTLER, which this kind of reminds me of. It would be cool if Maggie could get a nomination too. http://content.foxsearchlight.com/inside/node/4133

 Re: Best Actor 2009
Not sure if I'm confident in Freeman. I think 10 years ago he runs away with the Oscar, but the academy in general has been wise towards these obviously baity attempts in the acting categories and elsewhere. My shit detector is going off for Invictus in general. Definitely seems like the Memoirs, Australia, Flags of Our Fathers, etc. as one of the earliest names we knew and one of the biggest misfires. And after his streak, I think Clint has deservingly gone cold for a while

 Re: Best Actor 2009
Poor Morgan Freeman, everyone knew he had one shot at an Oscar dominating Nelson Mandela role and he waited ample time for it, except he picked a crappy script and senile director. Oh well he already has an Oscar anyways

 Re: Best Actor 2009
I would never rule out Eastwood this much in advance. Had Gran Torino been released three weeks earlier it'd have been a bigger figure in the Oscar race last time.

It seems like its going to be these 5, I just don't see anyone else breaking that.

 Re: Best Actor 2009
Clooney, Bridges, Firth, and Freeman are all pretty much locked in at this point; the last spot is between Renner, Mortenson, Day-Lewis, and Stuhlbarg. It'd be cool if something more surprising snuck in.

I don't think DDL has any chance whatsoever.

 Re: Best Actor 2009
I think Bridges has this one. Critics are praising the performance as his career best, so it's not as if being overdue is the principle reason for consideration here like O'Toole several years ago.

Viggo Mortensen, however, is AMAZING in The Road--on both emotional and physical levels. Damn it, Academy, nominate it!
