 Re: Avatar (INTL.)
That would make it the first film since Titanic and only the second one overall to gross $100m in both markets. Actually, I can't think of any other $100m+ release in Germany since Titanic.
I have no words, really. But this is thrilling. And I'm happy it's an original film, and a great one at that, this time. And no fucking chipmunks in sight...

 Re: Avatar (INTL.)
Yeah, the German box office this decade has been shit, just like Japan's. France and the UK have been troopers. Unfortunately, for the wrong films (Mamma Mia, URGH).
Where is Avatar headed in the UK?

 Re: Avatar (INTL.)
Japan seems will give Avatar 100 million if Hp6 got 93 million and Avatar opened bigger than Hp6.

 Re: Avatar (INTL.)
I'd still be cautious about calling 100m+ for Avatar right now. It did indeed beat Potter's Wednesday with $4.38m, but there's still this: Quote: TOKYO — "Harry Potter and the Half-Blood Prince" bowed in Japan on Wednesday with $3.57 million on 840 screens — besting "War of the Worlds" for the biggest-ever Wednesday opening.
This number was particularly impressive since Wednesday was Ladies' Day at Japanese theaters, meaning women pay 1,000 yen ($10.69) for an adult admission, compared with the standard price of $19.24. Women account for the bulk of the "Potter" aud in Japan. Say 60% of Potter's opening day audience were women, that's 60% of the tickets sold at half-price for the opening day, a very significant amount. Someone can try to do the math if 60% paid half-price, what would that have been at full price. I wish I could find admissions. Just trying to keep expectations down a little if it would fail to hit $100m. Let's hope it does.

$19.24 for a ticket, yikes. Japan's mad-expensive.

Whoops, when I say let's hope it does, I mean let's hope it does hit 100m, not fail to hit 100m.

Just trying to keep expectations down a little if it would fail to hit $100m. Let's hope it does. If they'd paid full price the opening day would have been roughly $5.7m. Thanks. But then we have to ask, "how much smaller would the female audience have been opening day if they had to pay full price?" I'd assume most would have shown up anyway, but there could have been some who wouldn't. But it seemed to be quite frontloaded either way because screendaily, while just a single source, were expecting a $27m 5-day after the first day, which it didn't come close to. And in Avatar's case, it opened on a holiday, but I'm not sure if that's a good or bad thing. I don't really notice it helping much in the years the 23rd was on a saturday or sunday at BOM, so perhaps Avatar's opening day isn't inflated.. maybe it's the opposite. Who knows. Just gotta wait for more numbers. And when they do come in, we can compare: HP6 (5-day) - Japan – $18.1m (¥1.7bn) and 1.4m admissions from 843 screens, beating HP5 by 8%.

this was posted in bom. Quote: AVATAR RECORDS 7TH BIGGEST OPENING WEEK OF ALL-TIME IN AUSTRALIA !
AVATAR grossed a massive $19,302,196 in its opening week (17 - 23) @ 588 screens which is an amazing $32,827 PSA !
Combining this impressive number with its Wed 16th previews gross of $931,125, AVATAR has a total box office cume of $20,233,321 in Australia.
This opening week is more than two million higher than that of The Dark Knight in July 08. However, this number is a mere $300K below LOTR: TTT & HP: OOTP & $400K below that of TF: ROTF earlier this year.

I gotta feeling this one will easily hit $50m, it may even challenge Titanic actually for the all-time record at this rate. It still has 1 monster week of holiday fueled grosses to come with Boxing Day just around the corner.

 Re: Avatar (INTL.)
Just saw Avatar in cinemas today, Chirstmas Eve. 6:20pm session - 2nd last session at the theatre. Was about 40-50% full.
Thoroughly enjoyed the movie. Thank god really because it's so much better than what the trailers made it out to be.
The visuals were awesome and the key pulling power of this movie. I've never been blown away by visuals to this degree, this is a totally new experience and definately the way cinema is heading.
The story itself while charming was quite cliched, though expected. It did have some emotional elements but did not have the weight of a true epic movie i felt.
The score while touching was quite dissapointing. There is not one thematic piece that is memorable, no true defining score. It's solid nonetheless, but you can't remember it.
I was a tad dissapointed in the final battle scene. It had the drama, but lacked the spectacle. I'm sure they'll bring it in the next installment (they normally do) with bigger and better gunships.
Throughout the movie i kept thinking to myself, what if LOTR was in 3D, it would be my dream come true. LOL, fingers cross that day may now come.
Avatar on 3D will surely pull in 2nd viewings, you can't experience it at home so you would have to see it in cinemas if you want the same mind-blowing experience.
Overall:
Visuals = 10/10 Story = 7.5/10 Emotional Impact = 7.5/10 Overall = 8.5/10
Definately one of this years best and truely deserves to live among the highest grossing pics.
