It'll do well in Japan. On Eiga (popular entertainment site) it's the 3rd most popular film at the moment and has a front page article. It's going to be a 5-day opening, so I'd expect something around $5 for the 3-day.

The most popular films are on the right, under the most popular celebs.

what's the number one. one piece is just number 5 and up is 4.

I dunno, it looks like it might be a tv drama brought to the big screen (they are always popular) judging from the picture that either opened this past weekend or is being released this week coming up.

Only number 3 on the popularity list? What is number 1 & 2? Sorry, i can't see anything on the right...

Local films. Not sure what No.1 is, I think it's a tv drama that is opening this week or opened this past weekend, and No.2 is the new Kamen Rider (superhero show) that opened last week.

Here is the direct link: http://eiga.com/movie/ranking/

Edit - This Is It is so high because it's dominating the DVD charts ( http://kakaku.com/dvd/dvd-movie/ranking_4910/ ) , taking the top 3 spots with each version.

I hope Fox is milking the shit out of the "From the Director of TITANIC" tag line in Japan. Titanic made $215m or so in Japan. That's like the best marketing bit for Avatar ever.

It's been a while since we had a $100m grosser in Japan. China is catching up fast.

Though I think Avatar has better chances than most to break this drought.

 . Though i'm sure they can co-exist in some way, there's no way Avatar will drop harder than 2012. which makes $600m almost a lock now.

China is growing quickly.

Hollywood films in Japan have seen big drops over the years. Only Pirates 3 has grossed $100 million in the past 6 years (I think ROTK and Nemo were the last). Local films are still doing well though, and have actually been on a slight increase yearly (the reason the yearly box office has been mostly flat each year). Ponyo broke $100 million easily, and if you count Rookies ($99 million according to Variety) did this year. Potter 6 came fairly close this year as well ($93 million) on the Hollywood front. Next year should see Bayside Shakedown 3 do $100 million, and the newest Ghibli film has a shot for the biggies I'm aware of. Potter 7 could also do $100 million.

Avatar could do $100 million, it's not impossible. I'd probably expect a gross somewhere around $50/$60 million (which would be great, Transformers 2 didn't even hit $30 million this year for example) though before thinking $100 million is likely.

Yep - ROTK, Last Samurai and Nemo were the last ones to hit $100m in Japan for foreign pics. Ponyo the last one for local pics at $160m+.

Bakeside Shakedown 2 was huge ($155m back in 2003), so yeah, no question that the next one would be huge as well.

I wonder if The Hobitt can make $100m+, in a way it's more innocent and targeted at younger audiences which might work better than LOTR.

Actually, we forgot Potter 3. It broke $100m pretty easy in 2004.

Oh yes indeed. Potter 1-3 was huge, then the next 3 dropped to around the $90m range.

I wonder where the final 2 will go. Hopefully back to $100m+ days.

Japan delivered the biggest gross for Titanic, so yeaj, there's going to be love for Avatar alright. Opening weekend is going to be huge, I see upwards of $10m.

Japan is responsible for the only two $200m+ grossing films in any territory outside North America. And the fun part? They made that money with less than 1/8th of Japan's population watching. Titanic drew at least 1/3rd of North America's population.

So the potential is always huge.

Some larger European countries.

RUSSIA - Opening Weekend

First movie ever to gross $20m outright in Russia. Ice Age 3 currently holds the record across Russian and neighbouring states at around $45m. It's almost half-way there already.

Avatar - $21m (1300 or 353 3D Screens)

Hancock - $11.7m (589)
Shrek 3 - $11,657,486 (4-Day - 600)
Pirates Of The Caribbean 2: Dead Man’s Chest - $10.4m (530)
The Very Best Film 2 (2009) - $9.3m

FRANCE - Opening Weekend

3rd largest for 2009 behind Harry Potter 6 and on par with New Moon. It's a smidgen above 2012. This has been one huge year for openings, with 4 movies breaking the Top 10 All-Time openers list in USD.

Bienvenue Chez Les Ch’tis (Welcome To The Sticks) (2008) - $36,579,354 (4,378,720 adms. 6-Day or $31,674,375 5-Day - 793 TC)
Les Bronzes 3: Amis Pour La Vie - $24.2m (€20.06m/ 3,234,559 adms. - 950 TC)
Astérix At The Olympic Games (2008) - $23,354,658 (2,711,869 adms. 5-Day - 1078 TC)

Spiderman 3 - $22,528,436 (6-Day - 967 TC)
Harry Potter 6: HBP - $20,541,239 (€14.4m/ 2.4m adms. 5-Day - 949 TC)
Harry Potter 4: GOF - $19.9m (2,802,259 adms. adms. - 950 TC)
The Twilight Saga: New Moon - $19,148,300 (2,112,654 adms. - 755 TC)
Avatar - $19m (€12.7m - 1083 TC or 450 3D)
2012 - $17,932,762 (1,973,280 adms. - 716 TC)

Taxi 2 - $17.5m+ (2,951,255 adms. - 831 TC)
Harry Potter 3: POA - $17,070,745 (€13,905,745/ 2,503,699 adms. 7-Day - 907 TC)

GERMANY - Opening Weekend

Managed to beat 2012 here and is the 4th largest opening of the year. The opening record was taken down by HP6 and both Ice Age 3 and Twilight were above $15m. 2012 after 5 weeks was sitting just above $35m. Avatar shouldn't have any problems grossing that much in 3 weeks considering the holidays.

Harry Potter 6: HBP - $23,845,427 (€16.4m/ 2.1m adms. 4-Day - 831 TC)
Lord Of The Rings: ROTK - $23,248,457 (€18,819,626/ 2.666.776 adms. 5-Day or $17,750,498/ 2.050.776 adms. 4-Day - 1337 TC) or $22,565,499 Actuals

UK - Opening Weekend

It has been quite a boring year in UK box office. Only 1 movie has managed to crack the Top 20 on the all-time openers list. HP6 is the current standard for the year at $85m. Avatar with

1) Harry Potter 3: POA - $43,749,885 (£23,882,688/ €34,629,898 7-Day* or $17,478,583/ £9,346,002/ €13,787,106 3-Day - 535 TC)

AUSTRALIA (AUD$) - Opening Weekend

These are actuals.

Avatar scored the 13th largest opening weekend (4-Day) in history and the 3rd largest for the year behind the two record breakers, HP6 and New Moon.

This is also the 3rd widest release in history, behind only last year's Australia (643 screens) and Pirates 3 (606 screens).

You will now need at least AUD$10m to crack the Top 20, with Avatar's entry signally the exit of FOTR (a previous record holder in 2001). How times flies.

Including previews, Avatar's opening including previews would be good enough for #9 on the charts.

This year's current champion is HP6 at around $40.6m, followed by Transformers 2 at $40.3m. New Moon's tally after 5 weeks is at $35.3m, though it'll top out at around $38m-$40m.

Avatar is a contender for the yearly crown if the next 4 weeks are strong enough. We're in school holiday mode now so it'll have huge weekdays and weekends all the way up to the last week in Jan.

165 million
should pass 325-350 million by next Sunday and then it has another week of Holidays...

I see a 650 million finish considering it opened higher than 2012 and has Holidays and WOM on its side.
