Golden Globes will be announced on Dec 15th, prior to Avatar's release. It could very well be nominated for Best Picture, which adds an entire new dimension to the type of people seeing it opening weekend.
Short of a meteorite crashing into North America or swine flu decimating parts of the country, there's very little chance of Avatar not surpassing Star Trek. You can talk all you want about how it wont cross the truly epic box office benchmarks. But 250 million, that's really funny. Just saw the online trailer. Gonna see the specials scenes in IMAX tomorrow night. Avatar's trailer reminds me of an Outer Limits episode that's crossed with Lost and Night Elves from World of Warcraft. The CGI is obvious. Of course it is good enough that with a decent story it could be entertaining. So I still have hope it will be good. However it appears far from groundbreaking. The preview tomorrow night may change my mind but I would predict 220-320 depending on length. enough to be Star Trek but nothing superb.

James Cameron is creating a new world fantasy and that's extremely tough to break into mainstream audiences with no previous source material or reason to be excited. The teaser didn't lower my concerns much, it seems more confusion will come out of it. I don't think it's going to have a huge opening; it's going to more legs-centric because people will need some convincing. I have no doubt that it will be amazing.

I really don't see Avatar making more than $330 million, so it won't even be close to another Titanic but beating Star Trek's $256 million isn't THAT difficult. It'll make it.
