Hmm...are there any big local productions coming up until the end of the year?

I'd imagine Iron Man 2 will be pretty huge in China next year.

Here is the current schedule:

11/27: Mulan (a lot of local stars)
12/9: The Treasure Hunter (Jay Chou and Chiling Lin)
12/10: Fung wan II (the sequel of the blockbuster 10 years ago)
12/11: Amazing Tales: Three Guns (Zhang Yimou's new film, a remake of Coen Brothers' Blood Simple)
12/18: Bodyguards and Assassins

But look like the buzz around Avatar's release on Jan 1 is dwarfing them all.

"While not quite matching its blazing opening pace domestically, "The Twilight Saga: New Moon" nonetheless topped the foreign circuit on the weekend, finishing at No. 1 with an estimated $118.1 million from 6,681 screens in a relatively contained opening break comprising 25 territories.

The girl-meets-vampire sequel notched an astronomical $17,677 per-screen average overall.

Ranking No. 2 was the prior weekend's No. 1 title, director Roland Emmerich's disaster epic "2012," which dropped nearly 40% from its mighty $165.2 million opening frame to finish with $100.5 million from 13,487 screens in 107 markets. Its 12-day overseas gross totals $341.1 million.

"New Moon," the second film version of Stephenie Meyer's teen-favorite novels starring Robert Pattinson and Kristen Stewart, set opening records in Australia ($13.3 million from 268 sites or a nearly $50,000 average per screen) and in New Zealand ($1.9 million from 90 sites), according to distributor Summit International.

"New Moon" dominated the U.K. ($18.7 million from 499 locations, or nearly $37,500 per screen), Italy ($13 million from 770 sites), France ($17 million from 751 situations) and in Spain ($13.7 million from 652 sites). The film's opening weekend gross worldwide came to $258.8 million.

"New Moon's" predecessor, 2008's "Twilight," grossed $384 million worldwide over the course of its entire run, of which $192 million came from outside the U.S. and Canada.

"2012" finished No. 3 on the weekend domestically, but its overseas total so far is more than three times its domestic cume. A No. 1 Japan opening, the biggest weekend bow of 2009 in the market, generated $7 million from 627 screens. Worldwide cume stands at $449.3 million.

"2012's" No. 1 second China frame came up with $9.7 million from 1,988 sites for a market cume of $30.5 million. In all, the disaster epic took the top weekend spots in at least 13 territories. Top five markets for the film so far: China, France (cume $28.6 million), Russia ($27 million), Germany ($24 million) and the U.K. ($21.3 million)

Opening in Italy was "Planet 51," a family-oriented animation title about an American astronaut confronting little green people on an alien planet, which grossed an estimated $600,000 from 242 screens. The HandMade Films/Ilion Animation outing features the voices of Dwayne Johnson, Jessica Biel, Gary Oldman and John Cleese.

Third on the weekend "Disney's A Christmas Carol," which continues to draw strongly in Russia ($3.5 million from 350 sites) and the U.K. ($3.3 million from 650 locations for a market cume of $13.9 million). The weekend overall for the director Robert Zemeckis' 3D performance-capture version of Charles Dickens' 1843 novella, starring Jim Carrey as Scrooge, provided $18.5 million from 4,434 screens in 41 markets for an overseas cume of $60 million.

No. 4 was "This Is It," which captured $5.8 million from 3,490 screens in 75 markets. Since its Oct. 28 overseas bow, the Michael Jackson concert-preparation docu has an accumulated boxoffice of $168.5 million. It ranked No. 2 in its fourth Japan round on the weekend with $2.9 million from 309 screens for a market cume of $39.7 million.

Fifth was the Pixar/Disney animation title "Up," which boosted its offshore cume to $379 million thanks to a $3 million weekend from 3,015 situations in 25 territories. A Japan opening is due Dec. 5.

Universal's "Couples Retreat" pushed its international cume to $37.7 million thanks to a $2.5 million weekend at 1,100 playdates in 23 territories. The Vince Vaughn comedy opened No. 4 in the Netherlands, held at No. 4 in Germany and was No. 2 in Austria. It has 38 more territories to play with openings in Bulgaria, Egypt and Finland due this week.

Making its Japan debut was the Weinstein Co./Universal's "Inglourious Basterds," which fought its way to $2.2 million overall on the weekend from 1,300 sites in 30 markets. Its No. 4 Japan bow generated $1.6 million from 315 screens.

The World War II drama from director Quentin Tarantino is winding down its overseas run and has accumulated $190.6 million overseas to date. The title has two more territories to play: Ecuador and the Philippines.

In the U.K., Lionsgate's release of "Harry Brown," a crime drama starring Michael Caine as avenger of a friend's murder, finished No. 4 in its second round with an estimated $1.3 million from 357 screens. Market cume is about $4 million.

Universal opened "A Serious Man" in the U.K. (finishing at No. 9 with $525,000 from 50 locations), Australia and New Zealand for an overall total of $770,000 from 93 sites. Focus Features is also releasing overseas the Coen brothers' look at the Jewish community circa 1967 in a Midwestern suburb.

Finishing at No. 4 in France was Pathe's release of director Claude Berri's final film, "Tresor" (Treasure), which in its second round garnered $1.4 million from 473 screens for a market cume of $4.5 million. Finishing fifth in the market was Diaphana Films' release of "Rapt," a drama from director/co-writer Lucas Balvaux about the kidnapping of a billionaire in the 1970s. Opening gross was $1.3 million from 230 locations.

Other international cumes: Disney's "G-Force," $159.1 million; Fox's "Amelia," $1.7 million; Mandate International's "Saw VI," $26.6 million; Fox's "Fantastic Mr. Fox," $13.4 million (U.K. and Singapore only); Universal's "Public Enemies," $107.7 million; Fox's Wild Bunch Distribution's "Le petit Nicolas," $46.4 million (from eight frames in France only); Universal's "Away We Go," $150,000 (Universal territories only); Disney's "Surrogates," $69.2 million; and Fox's "(500) Days of Summer," $22.9 million."

Obviously quite great for New Moon. It does have a lot of markets left but not many major ones. The most outstanding one will probably be Germany. I see around $740-760 million worldwide for it which will be an almost 100% increase over the original's WW take. That's amazing. I won't be surprised if Eclipse crosses $900 million worldwide next summer.

2012's second weekend is equally great, though. The only major new market it added is Japan and yet it delivered $100 million in its second weekend. After two weeks it has already almost topped The Day After Tomorrow's $357 million OS total and will do so during the upcoming days. I expect it to stand at $430 million overseas by the end of the next weekend and eventually pass $500 million. In fact I think $720-740 milion worldwide is happening for it and it'll become the 3rd-biggest movie of the year overseas (behind Ice Age 3 and Potter).

Saw VI is down overseas as well, though not as badly as in the US. With Germany and a few more markets ahead I see around $70 million worldwide which is still very good for a movie budgeted at $11 million.

Unlike many Christmas-themed films, A Christmas Carol turned out to be a very very solid overseas performer. In fact there's a chance it'll match its domestic performance. With France, South Korea and a few smaller markets ahead as well as with Cgristmas coming up this will top $250 million worldwide reaching as much as $270 million.

Inglourious Basterds' start in Japan is solid though it would have been smarter not to pit it against 2012...In any case it should crawl to $200 million overseas now and finish with $320 million worldwide.

Surrogates is looking good for $130-140 million WW, somewhat redeeming its bad domestic performance.

UK's box-office:

http://movies.nytimes.com/pages/movies/ ... index.html

£11,683,158 is an absolutely AMAZING opening for New Moon!! Because that's I think a tad more than Twilight made there in TOTAL! It's probably looking at around £35 million in total there which is more than three times as much as Twilight did.

Up's doing well too, though and should be able to pass Ice Age 3 soon. UK is one of the few countries in the world where it'll be able to do so.

Greta hold for A Christmas Carol too. Its third weekend is still well above its first and with Christmas ahead it'll likely get past £15 million.

New Moon breaks out BIG in Russia, as expected, making over $9 m in its opening weekend. 2012 held amazingly well ($7 m and -57%), considering its enormous o/w in the Top-4 and huge competition. Christmas Carol once again proves Carrey's popularity here, making $3.8 m.
I'm pretty sure this was the 2nd biggest weekend ever and the biggest non-holiday weekend ever.

Well thank God 2012 is at least bigger in Russia than New Moon (though I expect the same for Asian countries too).

New Moon made more OW than Twilight in total there right?

Waaay more. Twilight did almost $3.6 m total. New Moon's opening weekend was almost 10 times bigger than Twilight's.
With not that much competition in the next 3 weeks, I think 2012 has a good chance at $40+ m total. TDAT made $9.85 m total BTW.

It grossed $44,6 m and $2,8 m in Ukraine, but it faced HP in its 3rd weekend. 2012 doesn't have that problem.

But it won't top Ice Age 3. Hmm, I wonder what film will.

Maybe Avatar? Is there hype? Seems like a movie that'll do well in Russia.

I think IA3 is pretty much safe as the year's biggest grosser, unless 2012 holds extremely well, which I don't think will happen. Avatar does have a lot of anticipation - but I don't think its appeal is big enough for the general audience to make any kind of a mark here. The biggest hype is among the film geeks, and there's a lot of regular moviegoers who don't even care. It doesn't look like a breakout hit, and I have a slight premonition of a dissapointment. I really don't see more than $15-20 m, it just doesn't have that big event picture smell. Maybe I'm wrong, but something just doesn't work here. Women are a big factor for b/o, but they don't give a damn, and that worries me a lot.

I would say Sherlock Holmes that opens December 31st has much broader appeal and thus better chances to become a smashing hit than Avatar. Holmes has been always our thing, universally loved thanks to the great Soviet TV-series - so we have that as a candy for the general audience and we have Guy Ritchie as one of the country's most liked directors and his stable fanbase. Not to mention the year's best release date. Although it has a major competitor in the face of Black Lightning, the first local outing in the superhero genre, produced by Bekmambetov, but the movie looks and sounds like shit - I mean, the guy on flying "Volga" (that's the local car for those who don't know, and they use the model from the 50s)?

When I see all the hype surrounding Avatar I just can't help thinking of King Kong... It just screams to me.

"Girl-meets-vampire saga "The Twilight Saga: New Moon" easily took the No. 1 spot on the foreign circuit during the weekend, grossing an estimated $85.1 million from 8,476 sites in 56 markets.

Offshore boxoffice for the teen favorite based on Stephenie Meyer's novel and co-starring Robert Pattinson and Kristen Stewart held up surprisingly well from its No. 1 opening round, dropping a relatively benign 31%.

"New Moon's" total offshore gross is $243 million. Worldwide, the total is $473.7 million.
A first-place Germany bow garnered an estimated $18 million (including previews) from 719 locations. (Offshore distribution is supervised by Summit International, with Concorde Filmverleih handling in Germany.) The premiere included, said Summit, the second-best Germany opening day this year behind the sixth edition of Warner's Harry Potter series, "Harry Potter and the Half-Blood Prince."

"New Moon" also topped the charts in Paris, the U.K. and in Spain. Top market cumes include the U.K. ($31.5 million), France ($28 million), and Australia and Italy ($23 million each).

Boxoffice action for director Roland Emmerich's "2012," the weekend's No. 2 title, dropped by more than 40% from the prior weekend, tallying $61.6 million from 12,090 screens in 107 markets. Since it opened offshore on Nov. 11, the disaster epic has grossed a mighty $455.8 million on the foreign circuit and $594.6 million worldwide.

"2012" drew especially well in Asia, taking the No. 1 spots in such key markets as China (a whopping $8 million from 1,630 sites for a market cume of $51.3 million), Japan ($4.26 million from 612 screens, cume $18 million) and Korea ($4.18 million from 590 spots, cume $26.7 million.

No. 3 was "Disney's A Christmas Carol" with Jim Carrey as Scrooge, which opened in seven markets, grossing $20.4 million from 5,328 sites overall in 48 territories. Holdover markets proved strong, providing $15.3 million of the weekend total, down a mild-mannered 28% from the prior frame.

"Christmas Carol's" foreign cume stands at $90.8 million. Worldwide, it has grossed $196.2 million thus far.

Fourth was "Paranormal Activity," director Oren Peli's super-low-budget horror thriller and domestic boxoffice phenomenon, which opened in U.K. (finishing No. 2 in the market with an estimated $4 million from 395 sites) as well as in Spain and South Korea, and wound its second Germany round. Director Oren Peli's super-low-budget horror thriller and domestic boxoffice phenomenon, tallied estimated overall weekend boxoffice of $7 million from about 1,000 screens.

The weekend's No. 5 title was Warner Bros.' newcomer "Ninja Assassin." Directed by James McTeigue, the action crime drama opened to $6 million from about 920 locations. A No. 2 Korea bow generated $3.2 million from 243 screens.

Disney unveiled family comedy "Old Dogs" co-starring John Travolta and Robin Williams in Mexico and in South Africa day-and-date with its No. 4 domestic premiere. Opening tally from both markets was $1 million with Mexico providing $816,000 from 321 screens. Russia and Spain openings are on tap this week.

Paramount opened "Law Abiding Citizen," a thriller co-starring Jamie Foxx and Gerard Butler, in the U.K., where it finished No. 4 in the market with $2.4 million from 354 screens. Disney's "G-Force" opened in China ($1.5 million from 300 screens) and drew $2.3 million on the weekend overall. Cume for the animation title from producer Jerry Bruckheimer stands at $161.8 million.

In Spain, Paramount's local-language drama "Celda 211" (Cell 211) pushed its four-frame market cume to $8.1 million thanks to a $1.4 million weekend from 220 locations, a mere 15% drop from the prior weekend's tally.

Top newcomer in France was Studio Canal's release of director Albert Dupontel's No. 4 ranked "Le vilain" (The Villain). The comedy about a bank robber on the run drew $2.6 million from 340 dates. Clocking in at No. 7 was Mars Distribution's "Une affaire d'Etat" (An Affair of State), a hard-boiled political thriller from director Eric Valette. Opening weekend drew $900,000 from 180 situations.

Other international cumes: Pixar/Disney's Up," $380 million; Universal's "Couples Retreat," $39.6 million (after a $1.4 million weekend at 900 sites); Sony's "Cloudy With a Chance of Meatballs," $63.4 million (thanks to a $2.1 million weekend 1,030 sites in 36 markets); the Weinstein Co./Universal's "Inglourious Basterds," $194 million; Sony's "The Ugly Truth," $113.7 million; Pathe's "Tresor" (Treasure," $5.3 million (in France only); Universal's "The Invention of Lying," $11 million (from six territories); EuropaCorp. Distribution's "Le concert," $9.8 million (France only); Universal's "Public Enemies," $108.3 million; Focus Features/Universal's "A Serious Man," $1.9 million (from Universal territories only); and Diaphana Film's "Rapt," $2.2 million (France only).
