Post Star Wars: Episode III to Open the Cannes Film Festival
From IGNFilmForce --

Quote:
February 18, 2005 - Star Wars: Episode III – Revenge of the Sith will open the 58th Cannes Film Festival. According to This Is London, a deal was recently struck after months of negotiations between Star Wars creator George Lucas and festival coordinators.

Festival De Cannes takes place May 11th-22nd in the south of France.

The UK-based website is also reporting that Ewan McGregor may be in attendance. McGregor is preparing to star in Michael Grandage's new London stage version of Guys and Dolls at the Piccadilly Theatre.

If you're not on the Cannes guest list then you'll have to wait until May 19th (in most countries) to see Revenge of the Sith.

The final chapter of the Star Wars prequels takes place three years after the events of Attack of the Clones. The Clone Wars are nearly at an end as the Jedi Council dispatches Obi-Wan (McGregor) to bring General Grevious, the deadly leader of the Separatist droid army, to justice. Meanwhile, back on Coruscant, Chancellor Palpatine has grown in power. His sweeping political changes transform the war-weary Republic into the mighty Galactic Empire. To his closest ally, Anakin Skywalker (Hayden Christensen), he reveals the true nature of power and the promised secrets of the Force in an attempt to lure him to the dark side.

I was very glad to hear about ROTS opening cannes this year. Wish I was there for it.

So do I. But I'm taking this as a really good sign that Lucas is confident in the film.

Me too. He knows more than anybody how that could kill his box office potential if negative word got out. I wonder if they went to him, or he came to them.

I'd already posted this in the award forum last week but this forum is more popular anyway.

In any case, Godzilla closed Cannes one year. Granted the closing film isn't as important as the opening film.

I'm looking forward to Sith. For those who can't afford the airfare to France, you could also go to one of the charity premieres in LA, Seattle, Chicago, Washington D.C., Boston, Denver, Atlanta, San Fran, Miami, or Manhattan on May 12.

If I can't get into a press screening, I'm seriously considering forking over the cash and going to Chicago.

Yes, I'm a geek.

I don't think it's geeky.

For only a couple hundred bucks that go to a good cause, you get the see Sith a week early.

Exactly. At least the money's going to a good cause.

But man, a week early? It'll be tough waiting for opening night. I saw Return of the King a week and a half before it opened, and almost went crazy waiting for the midnight screening.

I know what you mean. But I'm willing to pack in as much SW action as possible. I saw Clones twice within a few hours. First at the midnight premiere, then in the morning at a DLP theater.

If you're interested in tickets for Chicago, phone or email Molly Keating at 773-880-3913 or Mkeating@childrensmemorial.org.

Oh, I did the same thing. I was waiting in line for the midnight screening of AOTC when some radio folks came by offering passes to an early 7 p.m. screening. I *immediately* swiped one for myself and a friend, and then had another friend hold our places in line. We went in, saw the film, cheered our asses off, came back, and went back in line. We were treated like rock stars -- everyone asking how the film was, or what it was like to see Yoda fight, etc.

Good times. And thanks for the contact info -- I'm just about to send along an e-mail.
