Alda was great, he had the best scenes in The Aviator with Leo, but his performance is not noteworthy enough to award.

Lets for this topic pretend that the whole conversation about category confusion is eliminated. It's not like Dreamworks is the first one (cough The Hours cough) to get a more leading contendor voted into supporting. Among those, Foxx really deserves the call out for Collateral for playing the cab driver who is just having a bad night. In that script, it would have been easy for both Cruise and Foxx to dip into melodrama and stereotype, but both avoid it wonderfully.

Thomas Hayden Church, of any character this year, took me on a rollercoaster of emotions, from thinking he is a dolt, to discovering his love and his humanity, then making me absolutely loathe him, then, in the end feeling a bit sorry for him. He definately deserves the recognition of the nomination, and in many years, the win. Like any great ensemble though, it's hard to pull him out of a movie that's so tightly wound around the characters that awarding one over the other becomes difficult.

Morgan
Freeman's performance isn't the biggest stretch of his career, but he still handles it like the old master he is. Regardless of what he has done in the past, I think he deserves this award not because of his lifetime achievement, just for this film, for the bridge he played in Million Dollar Baby. The unspoken concern and love he has for Maggie and most of the patrons of the boxing gym shines through and through. The heartbreaking moment where he gives Maggie one of the biggest choices of her lifetime. He was flawless, and he deserves it.

Madsen, though I'm a huge fan of Blanchett's performance.

01 Cate Blanchett - The Aviator won't win one of the big awards without an acting award win. That's my GUT feeling. And Cate is worthy, and she can be seen to be maybe a little "owed" for such a "vicious snub" for Elizabeth which a lot of people felt she deserved. I dunno.

02 Virgina Madsen - If Madsen ends up winning this on the night, start looking for Sideways to be a player in the Best Picture category.

03 Natalie Portman - A strong year for Natalie, and proof she can break out of the Star Wars cardboard roles. She's someone who I can see being nominated more than a few times before ever actually winning, or we may never hear from her at the Academy Awards again. I haven't seen Closer so this is only a theory of her placement.

04 Sophie Okonendo - She was good in Hotel Rwanda, and it wasn't hard to be a stand out in that film, but for whatever reason that film came up short. She was never a serious winner, but she cried in the film, and she was pretty good so I guess the nomination is earned. *shrug*.

05 Laura Linney - Poor Laura. Kinsey kinda got buried, didn't it? It will happen again, she isn't going anywhere.

Good points all around but I want to add something to what you said above. Everyone knows I'm picking Sideways to win BP. But I realize it needs to pick up at least 2, if not 3 other awards IMO to secure BP. That means, screenplay, supporting actress, and hopefully, supporting actor.

The supporting awards are usually given out first. Mark my words, if Sideways takes one or both of those, BP is secured.

I think that, frankly, The Aviator's one and only win in a major category will be here. I won't be surprised if Madsen upsets, though. Okonedo and Linney have no shot, and I have a feeling Portman will be nominated again many more times.

Since you do not make your logic clear, I must assume that you are just doing it out of spite because you seem to think that I will get all flamingly upset because you seem to be obsessed with taking Lord of the Rings down as many notches as possible, which isn't new or surprising coming from you so why bother getting in a fight about it or calling me out?
