 Re: Toy Story 2
9/10 -> A-
Better than the first movie. It's funnier, better animated, with a more emotional story and the characters are still great - the new ones also. I love it. Even though it's a bit longer than TS it always goes by much faster than RS. It feels like it's half as long as TS. It's very engaging.

 Re: Toy Story 2
That's one of my problems with the film, it is sort of short, but because it is so fun along the way, I don't really mind

 Re: Toy Story 2
So, Toy Story was great in 3D, but Toy Story 2.... was MAGNIFICENT in 3D. I felt like the $2.50 upcharge was worth it solely for the opening sequence.
BRILLIANT.
I've seen the first movie more times than the second, but I've always preferred the second. I feel like there's a bit... *more* to the story.
And I never really paid attention to it 'til watching it in digital 3D today, but TS2's visuals were LIGHTYEARS beyond TS1's. There was so much more texture, and the grass looked so real... Everything was just so... lush.
And I swear to god in the scene when Al is sleeping on the couch and Woody is climbing up to get to his arm... Al looked almost photo-realistic there. Very weird.
I think I noticed partly due to seeing the films back-to-back, but also from getting to see them in digital, 3D clarity.
BEAUTIFUL. I can't WAIT for Toy Story 3 (which, BTW, I was quite disappointed to find that they only played the teaser trailer and not the one with footage that those reviews of this double-feature mentioned...).

My showing had the actual trailer attached to it.

 Re: Toy Story 2
Did you guys get the Toy Story trivia stuff during intermission that the reviews talked about? Because we didn't get that, either. They just replayed the NCM Play "pre-show" thing that played before TS1.
We got the trailers for Alice in Wonderland (OMG @ it in digital 3D.... WOWOWOW) and... Nightmare Before Christmas before TS 1 (can't recall any other trailers). Before TS 2, we got the teaser trailer for TS3 (which I'd already seen ages ago) and for A Christmas Carol (which actually does look rather fun in 3D).
And that's it.

 Re: Toy Story 2
I have no idea because due to some circumstances, I had to leave the theater about 30 minutes into the film and get my money back. I plan on going again during the week.

 Re: Toy Story 2
Ah. Well, at least you were able to get your money back.
I look forward to hearing what you think about this.
I just can't believe how utterly perfect TS is for 3D. TS2 especially felt as though it has always been intended to be in 3D.
I just wish they had better glasses. The earpieces kinda dug into my head, and the frames just don't lend themselves well to people like me who are stuck wearing glasses. I wish they'd make 3D glasses in the style of the wrap-around style sunglasses they make to go over your prescription glasses.
I also had a bit of difficulty with glare; my glasses were reflecting off the lenses of the 3D glasses... Never had that problem before with the larger pairs like the ones I got with Nightmare Before Christmas and Meet the Robinsons.

 Re: Toy Story 2
One thing I noticed about going is this; I usually sit in the back of the theater when I go to the movie and always assumed the 3D would look better from the back. But by the time I go into the theater for this, it was pretty much full and I had to sit near the front and the seats were perfect. The 3D seemed much better from the front than in the back.

 Re: Toy Story 2
Yeah, 3D doesn't pay off in the very back. I think in the middle is probably the best placing, but being close to the screen doesn't hurt much either (unless it is IMAX).

 Re: Toy Story 2
I sat center row, center seat (my favorite spot), and it worked fine right there. Of course, I went to a 12:55pm showing, so there were very few people there (kids not out of school yet, etc).
IMAX, I've found the back is the best (in a real IMAX, that is). We sat center row, center seat for Attack of the Clones in IMAX, and we really regretted it.

Well, maybe less center row, more like 60% away from the screen in terms of rows (yes, I am very specific about this). My only IMAX movie experience was Charlie and the Chocolate Factory. We sat about six rows away from the very back (out of around 20 rows)...seemed like a terrific spot.

BTW, Toy Story/Toy Story 2 3D won't be released in Germany until MAY NEXT YEAR. No kiddin' They want them to be close to Toy Story 3's release. Argh.

It's absolutely ridiculous how much I liked this more than TS1. So so so brilliant. And my first 3D movie experience! Everything looked amazing.

 Re: Toy Story 2
B, saw this again last night for first time since 1999. Better than the first one, but not quite the depth or fun of the other Pixar films Monsters Inc, Up, Nemo, Wall-E, or Incredibles. Also kind of a distraction that I keep on thinking Sideshow Bob whenever the Prospector speaks

 Re: Toy Story 2
This is one of Pixar's weaker ones IMO. The weakest in the trilogy easily, and the Prospector is not as good of a villain as Lotso. Veru funny and some cool new characters, but it doesn't have the emotional pull of the third aside from the Jesse plot and it isn't as fresh as the first. Still a great film though.
A+

 Re: Toy Story 2
All three are As, but the second and third are too littered with pop cultural jokes for me to push it over to A+, and the first does not have the gut punch enough to lift it higher and sadly the animation is dated and lacks for true artistic beauty

And there is a tasteful way to do pop culture jokes, they are not all lazy. Your beloved Birdman is one big pop culture reference.

 Re: Toy Story 2
You're right there is tasteful ways to delve into pop-culture. Tarantino is a master at this. Not sure how Birdman uses pop-culture jokes outside of a few tie-ins to the real world, but I guess I can see that as pop-cultural.
I guess what I am saying is there are jokes in Toy Story 2 and 3 that distract with the more rich storyline. One of the most gag worthy moments in Pixar history is the Spanish buzz. As a throwaway joke it might have work, instead they do an entire portion of the film dedicated to this joke! There's even a goddamn slow-motion scene that felt so out of place that I thought I was watching a Dreamworks movie.
That's not to say they weren't still great films so you don't need to get so defensive Zack

 Re: Toy Story 2
I think this is overall a better film than the first in terms of story and character, but it doesn't have the first's creativity, which is what bumped it over this one for me.
A+ still.

 Re: Toy Story 2
Its much better than the original in scope, emotional heft and growing characters. The only bits I don't like is again about Toys driving cars (would no one notice them?). Its great in it own right but I think TS3 is the best of the trilogy, one of the rare trilogy where it gets better every sequel specially when the original in itself is that great to begin with.
