I honestly don't know who Gabby Sibide is, let alone what role she has that is locked up for the oscar race.

Exactly. If they don't know how to behave, and feel OK offending others, they get their ass kicked, so they'll think next time before opening their rotten mouths.

I actually feel remarkably confident about the potential lineup considering how early we are. From either the reviews we already know or early WOM, Streep, Sidibe, Mulligan, and Cornish all look very likely at the moment. With three relatively unknown, I think the fifth spot will go to a star, someone like Bening, Swank, and Swinton.

Come on, Xiayun. You know these two will get nominated and you know what will happen.

Hopefully it finds a distributor ASAP. It won two awards at Venice, no?

I think Sidibe is the official frontrunner now, although Mulligan continued to gain steam at Toronto as well.

When will Meryl win another one? They can keep snubbing her only for this long.

she can't win for J&J. So she'll have to wait another year or two I guess.

Current five I'm predicting:

1. Gabourey Sidibe
2. Carey Mulligan
3. Meryl Streep
4. Abbie Cornish
5. Annette Bening

Those five all already have significant buzz now, and we still have a slew of other possible contenders in the next several months. Looking to be a strong year for the category.

The thing that still bothers me with Amelia is the rating. It's PG right? Where's the meat in that. I'm curious who was the last actress to win for a PG performance.

Eeew, it's PG? That honestly makes me not ever want to watch it :P. It's not like I don't watch anything that's PG, but this didn't look very exciting to begin with. The PG rating makes it even less so.

I could certainly see a nomination. I believe she'd be supporting though.

A win is doubtful, but she has the glowing reviews on her side. She only needs a bigger push later to be among the final 5, and then, who knows? Streep is not gonna win it, Bening is the only one "overdue" actually, and she's still not a lock for now either.

Btw, you should make a short and spoileress (though in this case, it doesn't really matter) comment about the movie in the reviews section, which is completely empty for this film. You're actually one of the people here I care about reading. :)

Hmm, Bright Star won't set the box-office on fire (the distributor is kinda not handling it well...I suppose they lack experience), but it should make $5-7 million or so which is enough in an acting category with such reviews. Away from Her and Half-Nelson made less if I remember correctly.

I don't think they're doing too bad a job with the movie myself. It's doing pretty good at the Box Office. I didn't even really expect it to do this well. Hopefully they expand The Young Victoria at least this well. Though I obviously hope for it to go wider. Wide enough for it to play at my theater.

So right now we have two locks:
Streep
Sidibe

one near lock:
Mulligan

With Cornish looking better each day. The question is who will fill that fifth spot now Amelia is out completely. I have always put my bet on Bening, but her film still doesn't have a U.S. distributor even when the buzz was the biggest post TIFF. So Mirren, Ronan, or Swinton?

Yep, here comes Mirren:

Quote:
Lively, engaging than (mostly) potent. Oscar bound.

(alternate 7 word review)
Mirren’s nomination chances? Golden.
McAvoy’s deflowering? Priceless.

(38 word gripe)
Christopher Plummer, Helen Mirren and James McAvoy all have lead roles in this film. Paul Giamatti, Anne Marie Duff, Patrick Kennedy and Kerry Condon are the supporting players of note... but Oscar campaigns will do what they will.

Post Re: Best Actress 2009
By the way...

Dare I say it, but one Miss Sandra Bullock with a nomination for The Blind Side? I know everyone here is extremely quick to write the movie off but if reviews are halfway decent, she could pull a Will Smith in Pursuit of Happyness. Especially since the field is weak this year.

Kevin Thomas of the LA Times loved her in the film:
Quote:
Could this suddenly become the year of Sandra Bullock?

A little less than a month ago I traveled to the Warner Bros. lot in Burbank to see a film called "The Blind Side" starring Bullock that, frankly, I wasn't expecting much from. Sometimes nice surprises happen.

This is the kind of inspiring and solid upbeat studio release (directed by John Lee Hancock) that could, and should, put Bullock firmly in the race for best actress. This could be her "Erin Brockovich." Just like the film that earned Julia Roberts her Oscar, this is a true life story about Leigh Anne Tuohy, an unstoppable force of nature who persuades her very white Southern family to take in a virtually homeless African American teen named Michael Oher (played by newcomer Quinton Aaron). This unusual "adoption" leads to a brand-new life for the boy and sends him on his way to eventually becoming an All-American football star.

Like the far more visible (at least media-wise) "Precious," it's a story of a person lifted out of his or her own personal ghetto, who uses hope and an indomitable spirit to prevail against all odds.

Aaron and the rest of the cast, which includes Tim McGraw and Kathy Bates, are just fine. But it's Bullock, burning up the screen as an upscale Southern woman who finds her heart and soul, who should finally earn some awards attention. It's easily her best screen work since her underrated supporting turn in "Crash," but she has yet to appear on anybody's short list of best actress candidates. (This writer excluded.)

"The Blind Side," together with her romantic comedy box-office smash "The Proposal," should make 2009 this star's most memorable year ever. (The less said about "All About Steve" the better.)

In fact, I've been told by sources at last week's ShowEast exhibitors convention that the movie played like gangbusters there. One top distribution exec for a rival studio actually told me that it could be classified as a great film if it were only about 10 to 15 minutes shorter. It does run long and could lose some of the football footage, but it never loses its grip on the audience thanks largely to Bullock.

Playing a real-life person is always helpful in awards season, particularly when that person can run around to media to say how authentic the portrayal is. It certainly worked with Brockovich's praise of Roberts, and I imagine Tuohy will do the same thing for Bullock.

It's entirely possible Bullock could even end up with two Golden Globe nominations this year if all the cards line up, one for actress in a comedy or musical for "The Proposal" and one for actress in a drama for "The Blind Side." And in the ever-fluid lineup of best actress Oscar candidates this year she has a real shot if Warners gets it out there to the acting community.

The major negative in this scenario is the film's Nov. 20 opening, directly against Summit's expected blockbuster "New Moon." It could get buried in the rubble that juggernaut leaves behind. Still, underdogs, which "Blind Side" undoubtedly is in this case, sometimes find a way to rise to the top.

It's called word of mouth.

Early, early picks but fuck I would love Meryl to win this.

Helen Mirren, "The Last Station"
Carey Mulligan "An Education"
Gabourey Sidibe "Precious"
Meryl Streep "Julie and Julia"
Tilda Swinton, "Julia"

There's not a chance in hell Swinton gets in. Nobody saw Julia and reviews were not very good. I personally shut it off before I was halfway through (it doesn't help that the movie is pretty long and I just didn't want to watch THAT much more of it). It was just not very good.
