Post Re: Inglourious Basterds (2009)
From IMDB's goofs section. http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0361748/goofs I sent imdb a reason to correct these two, but the first is clearly not a goof.

Quote:
#1 Miscellaneous: During Chapter 1 when Hans is speaking French and the subtitling is in English, one of the subtitles reads "Merci" instead of "Thank You".

# 2 Factual errors: Col. Hans Landa claims the Bubonic Plague was caused by rats. However the plague was caused by fleas on the rats, not the rats themselves.

#1 was intentional. Many french words are not translated like Merci and Oui.

Inglourious Basterds..... What can I say? So great. Probably the best movie of the year for me. It was just so badass in the QT sense and the acting by Christoph Waltz was some of the best acting I have witnessed in a really long time. The inaccuracies that occurred in the film make it that much more great. Mélanie Laurent's performance as Shosanna was suburb. (Side note: she is gorgeous.) Eli Roth did an exceptional job and Brad Pitt did great as usual.

The last line sums up the entire film.

9.5/10

Post Re: Inglourious Basterds (2009)
Quentin Tarantino is one of the best directors out in Hollywood today. Whether it be his direction with John Travolta and Samuel L. Jackson in Pulp Fiction or his mesmering action piece with Uma Thurman in Kill Bill. Tarantino seems to never miss a beat and the same is seen here in Inglorious Basterds. The tv spots and trailers may be a bit misleading as promoting the entire film around Brad Pitt's charatcer Lt. Aldo Raine's group of Inglorious Basterds just killing off Nazis. While this is one of the main points in the film, the film also trusts in the strong side stories of Shosanna Dreyfus (played by Mélanie Laurent), Col. Hans Landa (played by Christopher Waltz), and others. All these wonderful stories are brought together in one of the greatest climaxes seen in the past few years. Pitt's potrayal of Lt. Raine is wonderful and while he potrays the true message of the character well, he also adds in wonderful comic relief which is presented wonderfully whenever brought up in the film. Waltz's villianous betrayal however deserves at least an Oscar nomination if not a win, as his character is one of the most chilling but one of the most human villians seen in a film over the past few years. Other notables performances would include Mélanie Laurent, Diane Kruger, B.J. Novak, and a wonderful guest appearance from Mike Myers. Overall this film is one of the best treats, in fact it is the best film of the year so far. Tarantino has done it again and this time it may just be his best work yet. A

The only thing notable about BJ Novak's performance was that his name was in the credits. He didn't do anything that any other actor couldn't have done. Waste of putting him in the film, I think.

B.J. Novak is a lesser character on a long-in-the-tooth tv show (plus a writer). It's not like he is Telly Savalas or Donald Pleasance or something.

B.J.'s dialog, although short, was very funny.

I am way too biased to give a critical analysis of this film and it would not be fair to any readers to hear me rant about how much I despise Tarantino in anything other than a column. Exactly. If they don't know how to behave, and feel OK offending others, they get their ass kicked, so they'll think next time before opening their rotten mouths.

Zzzzzzzzzzzzzzzz. I really found this a chore to slog through but props on Tarantino for channelling Sergio Leone in that first scene. Pure Spaghetti Western it was.

Still though if I want to watch a subversive WW2 film I'll just stick on Kelly's Heroes again.

Ever seen one of the 'inspirations' for this movie, Gulli? http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0076584/
Give it a try, you may enjoy this one more.

Also, for you, lover of apocalyptic movies, give this one a try: http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0085125/ and don't tell me that it doen't look like a very respected movie from 3 years ago tells basically the same story. :D

I have 2019 on DVD oddly, its reallllllllllly campy even by 1980s Mad Max knock off standards. Must look for the other title looks like shlocky fun.

If you haven't seen Basterd's yet Price It's worth a watch as a Leone fan, the film is pretty much a Western in France just with QT unable to pull off the tense build-up's of GDTBATU or Once Upon A Time. You might find it better then I did.

Quintessential Tarantino. Pulp Fiction will always be my favorite of his, but part of this came darn close. The dialogs are incredible, as I love how Tarantino could make any scenes intense yet entertaining simply with the dialogs. Waltz delivered as good a performance as everyone said. Some of the turnarounds at the end were certainly quite unbelievable, but not bothered much by it. On the down side, a few characters were a little too caricature-like and over the top, and the film could have used a tighter cut among a couple of segments (feel QT sometimes could become too indulged in his own language), but overall, another triumph. A-.

Well....
I liked it. A lot. However it's not as special as some here are saying (imo)

Tarintino and Richardson do beautiful work and the film is a delight to see. It's form and visual presentation, as always for tarintino, is quite a marvel, however his belated script and slow directing pace don't even provide much opportunity to showcase the visuals. I sound very overly critical here, I will say that it has great acting, and the set-up, while slow and overly drawn is quite engaging. The climax and conclusion (essentially the bar shootout and on) leave you right on the edge of the seat and are incredibly well down. It does drag, which can be irritating, and could and probably should have been a 2 hour film, but its so well constructed despite this, and moreover so interesting, I still loved it.

5/5
(but certainly not my #1, 2, or 3 of the year.)

I'm comparing the way that both of our written reviews pointed out many flaws in the film, yet how we both ended up giving it a high rating nonetheless...

I was generally blown away by this film, easily Tarantino's best movie since Pulp Fiction. The artistic flourishes are numerous and brilliant, and the film is audacious as a whole. Tarantino mixes his trademark dialogue-heavy sequences with stirring action scenes, and keeps the level of tension thick in the air for just about every moment of the film. Brad Pitt is clearly having fun in his role, and while I wouldn't call it a brilliant performance, it's definitely memorable. Melanie Laurent probably has equal screen time and shapes Shoshanna into a strong, deadly force of nature hidden beneath an unassuming demeanor, while Diane Kruger is good in the film's other significant female part. The acting standout of this film is undoubtedly Christoph Waltz, whose portrayal of Landa is chilling, twisted and unsettling. This is a long film but it moves at such a fast pace and with such fiery intensity that I never noticed. A

Better on a second view.

The first two chapters, and the final one, are even more awesome than I remembered them being. And that's pretty awesome.

The middle two chapters are just as boring as I remembered them being, but not more so, and they were at least well done despite being boring.

still 5/5 but probably moved up a spot or two in my rankings of the year.
