As a drama, this film is an abject failure, but it works wonderfully as a comedy. You can tell it was based on a play, because it simply does not translate well to the screen. What damns it, though, is the writing, which is terrible. Just terrible.

It's not really worth analyzing in depth.

You blew out Meryl's light.

Since all seem to disagree with you, seems like you are going to have to analyze in depth. And PS. It is far from a comedy.

What grade would you give this film?

A 35% [ 5 ]
B 57% [ 8 ]
C 7% [ 1 ]
D 0% [ 0 ]
F 0% [ 0 ]

You may select 1 option

Post Re: Doubt [2008]
I wasn't really impressed.

It's neither subtle or smart enough to work as a straight-forward drama, nor ridiculous or over-the-top enough to work as a black comedy, and so it's stuck in the no man's land of filmed stage plays. Its baroque look and feel never comply with its weighty themes, and so the whole thing seems like a wash. Far too brief and flighty for something so (apparently) important.

Luckily, Meryl seems to rise above the limited material, though none of the other actors really do. Maybe PSH, but he's always good. The four acting nominations is kind of a joke.

Meh.

After seeing the film, I read the play this is based off, and there almost exactly identical....maybe because the director and screenwriter for the film happened to be the playwright...I don't know. :)

Anyway, this film is brilliant. It's subtle yet says a lot at the same time, if that makes any sense. Davis, Adams, Hoffman, and Streep are all phenomenal, and they ALL should've received Oscars, especially Davis....wow, just wow. She's absolutely incredible in that role.

Anyway, after seeing the film once, nearly two months later, I saw it again, and the film had the same effect on me at the end: the same uneasy feeling that nobody knows what to think anymore, and the fact that the film didn't have a definite ending. Just brilliant.

Grade: A (I MIGHT change it to an A+).

This was #2 favorite film of 2008, just behind Speed Racer, and tied with Slumdog Millionaire, just above The Wrestler. :)

I was pretty impressed by the main four actors, particularly Amy Adams growing up from an innocent nun. The ambiguity in the movie made it so much more interesting, bur like others, I was a bit disappointed with the ending. I guess she might have doubts because she's just gone through this terrible ordeal and feels totally alone from God, but it was just a bit sudden. Everything before that though is fantastic.

A couple of things...

A) This is a great fucking thread

B) This movie is still the best comedy of 2008, and still a fucking delirious treat of trash. A+++++

...except that exact phrase was used in about a zillion corporate media articles in a three month period amping up the 2008 Oscar race - - who wasn't sick of it by the Spring of 2009?
