I would say thanks to its less than stellar box office thus far, 500 Days is in the 2nd tier of 10 possible BP nominees. Trek is probably in the 2nd or 3rd tier.

Trek has better reviews, an amazing box-office and will show up in some tech categories. So what really places (500) above it?

Fox Searchlight, another big Sci-fi film on the horizon, and the fact that Trek is the 11th film in a very tired franchise.

Well, it is a restart of a franchise and judging by the reviews it got, it is anything, but tired.

Also, Star Trek is the better film : )

ST would have to not only be the better film but the best sci-fi film of the year and one of the best films of 2009 come the end of the year, to end up ahead of 500 Days on a chart.

As much as I loved Trek (its in my top 4), I doubt the above is going to happen.

I'll be in. With 10 nominations I am currently predicting it to get in. I would love to see that happen. Fox Searchlight needs to get behind it. They can do wonders when they throw their support behind one of their movies, and SUMMER is beloved.

Exactly. If they don't know how to behave, and feel OK offending others, they get their ass kicked, so they'll think next time before opening their rotten mouths.

Having now seen the film, I would like to reiterate that this would never ever ever in a million years ever happen.

This statement has nothing to do with my percieved notions about the quality of the film. This simply isn't Oscar, not for a moment.

Why are we so quick to throw logic to the wind every year when we find something we like?

The Hurt Locker getting an Oscar nomination is hopeful and optimistic. This was a foolish venture based mostly on the studio releasing it.

I refuse your offer.

As much as I understand the concept and draw of cynicism, and I actually am a rather cynical person in real life, I cling desperately to my vague sense of optimism in this dark, post-apocalyptic society.
