Very nice, a lot of 350-400 million earners this year, with Japan and China left, Wolverine should pull 390 WW.

And Boom at T4, I said under 250 since its disappointing wide release.

According to Niki, District9 might top Russia with at least $4m.

While not a uber-blockbuster opening, is among this year's highest and on par with GI Joe which also opened to the low $4ms in Russia.

If so, it will be pulling close to $10K PTA, which is a blockbuster level by any means (GI Joe had $6,200). BTW, IA3 is showing some nice late legs even though there was a big 3D release this week.
P.S. Cloverfield opened with $1.85 m and made $5.7 m in total.

'G.I. Joe' continues overseas domination
Closing in on $100 mil in only 12 days on foreign run

By Frank Segers

Expanding its No. 1 foreign run by 14 new markets on the weekend, Paramount's "G.I. Joe: The Rise of Cobra's" overseas boxoffice tally nonetheless dropped nearly 40% from its opening round, registering $26.2 million overall from 7,039 screens in 49 territories.

Still, the live-action feature from director Stephen Sommers based on the Hasbro toy line is pressing the $100-million foreign gross mark (cume stands at $91.5 million) after only 12 days out on the international circuit. It remained in first place for the second consecutive weekend. Worldwide tally stands at $190.3 million.

The biggest of the openings in mostly medium-sized markets was Germany where "Cobra" finished No. 3 with $1.9 million from 474 locations. Major holdovers included Korea ($3.1 million from 377 sites for a cume of $10.4 million), Russia ($2.6 million from 510 situations, cume $9 million) and China ($2.2 million from 990 locales, cume $9.5 million).

Sony introduced "District 9," which finished No. 1 in North America, in nine foreign markets for a total of $7 million drawn from 750 screens. Directed by Neill Blomkamp, a protege of producer Peter Jackson, the sci-fi tale of aliens in South Africa opened No. 1 in Russia ($4.5 million from 453 sites), New Zealand and the Ukraine. A No. 2 Australia premiere produced $1.8 million from 178 screens.

Second on the weekend was Warner Bros.' "Harry Potter and the Half-Blood Prince," which registered $14.5 million from more than 8,000 screens in 64 markets, pushing its foreign gross total to $577.7 million. Worldwide, the sixth "Harry Potter" has grossed $861.7 million, pushing its rank on the industry's all-time boxoffice hit chart to No. 17 behind Disney's "Finding Nemo."

No. 3 was 20th Century Fox's "Ice Age: Dawn of the Dinosaurs," which bagged $11.2 million from 6,532 sites in 66 markets thanks to a $2.4 million opening in Korea at 350 screens. The threequel, with a foreign boxoffice total of $600.7 million, is now the first Fox film since 1997's "Titanic" (foreign gross total of $1.24 billion) to cross the $600-million mark overseas.

Fourth was Pixar/Disney's "Up," which continued its marathon foreign run with a $10.6 million weekend from 2,396 screens in 19 territories. Overseas cume is $128 million with a global boxoffice total of $415 million. A Portugal opening produced the biggest opening for a Disney animation title, $825,000 from 80 sites for a per-screen average of $10,313.

No. 5 for the second consecutive weekend was Universal's "Public Enemies." Propeled by six market openings, the period crime drama from director Michael Mann starring Johnny Depp drew $9.2 million overall from 3,400 territories, lifting its foreign gross total to $75.5 million.

Fox's "Night At The Museum: Battle of the Smithsonian" is winding up its overseas run in Japan, and going out with a bang. Opening Nippon frame for the Ben Stiller vehicle produced $8.62 million from 625 sites ($13,790 per screen). Weekend overall generated $8.63 from 697 situations in two markets for a foreign of $222.4 million.

Thanks to an $8 million weekend from 3,000 sites in 50 territories, Warner Bros. sleeper hit comedy "The Hangover" raised its foreign boxoffice total to $136.6 million and its worldwide cume to more than $400 million.

"G-Force," a big-budget digital animation title from producer Jerry Bruckheimer and Disney, drew $6.7 million from 2,079 sites in 17 markets for a foreign cume of $40.9 million so far. Disney's "The Proposal" finished No. 1 in its third Germany frame for an overall $6.2 million at 2,530 locations in 35 territories. Overseas cume for the Sandra Bullock-Ryan Reynolds romantic comedy stands at $103.6 million.

Thanks to openings in the U.K., Spain, Italy and Malaysia, Fox's "Aliens in the Attic" pushed its foreign cume to $5.3 million. Overall weekend tally was $3.8 million from 1,250 sites in eight territories. The No. 3 U.K. debut produced $2.3 million from 436 locations.

Sony's "The Ugly Truth" played the U.K., Australia and Israel for a total of $3.5 million from 705 screens. Cume for the romantic comedy starring Katherine Heigl is $13 million.

Topping the U.K. charts was New Line's "The Time Traveler's Wife," a romantic drama costarring Rachel McAdams and Eric Bana about a Chicago librarian who time travels when stressed. Opening round produced $1.65 million from 426 sites.

In Paris and environs, "Neuilly sa mere!' (Neuilly my mother!) from TFM Distribution, a comedy about a Muslim teenager living with a traditional French family, finished No. 1.

Other international cumes: "The Taking of Pelham 1 2 3," $32.9 million; Focus Features/Universal's "Coraline," $43.1 million; Universal's "Land of the Lost," $12.7 million; DreamWorks/Paramount's "Transformers: Revenge of the Fallen," $427.3 million; and Universal's "Funny People," $1.3 million.

So ALIENS IN THE ATTIC is number 3 in the UK with $2.3M...but TIME TRAVELERS WIFE is number 1 with $1.65m.

How does that work?

G.I. Joe $26.2M/ $91.5M
District 9 $7m/$7m
Harry 6 $14.5m/$577.7m
Ice Age $11.2m $600.7m
Up $10.6m/$128m
Public Enemies $9.2m/$75.5m
Night at Museum $8.6m/$222.4m
Hangover $8m/$136.6m
G Force $6.7m/$40.9m
Proposal $6.2m/$103.6m
Aliens in Attic $3.8m/ $5.3m
Ugly Truth $3.5m/$13m
Time Travelers $1.65m

Nice to see JOE rule again :) $145-$160M looks in play internationally.

$190M in 10 days. Great.

Good start for Aliens in the Attic in the UK, could save some face internationally.

I just can't fathom that IA3 might end up at #3 all time behind only Titanic and ROTK. This is like the most shocking OS performance in ages.

It's pretty certain that Ice Age 3 will be #3 overseas. Bar a huge misstep in Italy which is unlikely.

"“Inglourious Basterds” is off to a rousing start on the international circuit.

Quentin Tarantino’s World War II opus blasted its way to $27.5 million over the weekend from 2,630 locations in 22 markets, claiming the No. 1 spot with a muscular $10,456 per-screen average.

“Basterd’s” international opening was the biggest ever for a Tarantino film, said Universal. Tarantino titles have had a mixed record overseas. 1994’s “Pulp Fiction” grossed a total of $101.9 million offshore and 2003’s “Kill Bill: Vol. 1” also topped the $100-million mark ($111.4 million), as per The Weinstein Co. figures. But “Kill Bill: Vol 2” in 2004 grossed $86.6 million while 2007’s “Death Proof” logged only $28.7 on the foreign circuit.

“Basterds” opened No. 1 in the U.K. with $5.8 million drawn from 441 screens, nearly a quarter of the market.

In France, “Basterds” also opened in the top spot with $6.1 million taken in from 500 situations, or 30% of the market, as per Universal figures. First place in Germany yielded $4.3 million from 443 sites and a 26% market share. Australia also provided a No. 1 berth and $2.7 million from 204 situations while Russia contributed $2.5 million from 340 dates.

In all, “Basterds” opened in first place in at least a dozen markets.

“Basterd’s” foreign campaign extends to 42 additional foreign territories covered over a five-month period concluding in December in Japan, somewhat similar to the eight-month distribution pattern Disney adopted for its summer release of the Pixar animation title, “Up.” This week’s “Basterds” openings include Argentina, the Netherlands, Denmark, Portugal and Iceland.

Universal, which shares overseas revenues 50-50 with The Weinstein Co., could use a boost from “Basterds.” 2009 overseas boxoffice for the distributor’s films through August 31 totals about $800 million, half the $1.6 billion in total boxoffice logged in the same period by 20th Century Fox, so far this year’s top-grossing major studio.

Best Universal performer in 2009 so far is action title “Fast and Furious,” which tallied $195 million foreign (versus $155.2 million domestic).

Still playing overseas from Universal is “Public Enemies,” which tallied 5.1 million on the weekend from 3,000 situations in 56 territories. International cume for director Michael Mann’s period crime drama with Johnny Depp stands at $85 million.

Paramount’s “G.I. Joe: The Rise of the Cobra,” which had been No. 1 overseas for the prior two weekends, grossed $14 million this round from 6,952 spots in 51 territories. Foreign cume stands at $118 million while the worldwide tally is $238.5 million. "

Great start for Basterds. It's definitely going to end up with $200+ million worldwide.

Solid for Public Enemies considering the film's very American topic. Considering it still has Japan and Italy ahead, its worldwide total should top out at $210 million or so. Still won't break even before DVD.

It's kinda shocking how huge Fast & Furious has been overseas. Bigger than Wolverine, Star Trek and even Monsters Vs. Aliens. $350+ million worldwide...

Hmm, I'm tempted to agree. Certainly Titanic is head and shoulders above anything else, but Jurassic Park making $550m+ in 1993 is kind of crazy. Then again, ID4 got pretty close to that just 3 years later.

For me, the top 6 international performances:

1.Titanic
2.Jurassic Park
3.Harry Potter/Sorcerer's Stone
4.ROTK
5. The Lion King
6. ID4

Titanic's numbers speak for themselves; there's simply no comparison between it and others. Jurassic Park, I think, was the first truly massive global release. Unlike ET or Star Wars, the majority of whose grosses came from the domestic market, Jurassic Park had a much larger international gross. Its performance was, in a sense, indicative of the trend we are witnessing whereby the role of the US within the global film market is slowly eroding as overseas markets begin to mature. ROTK had two huge films that propped it up, but it surpassed them by such an impressive amount. Potter did have the books, but I think people forget that the books, while huge, were not nearly as massive as they became after the film opened. Independence Day was massive, but it didn't do anything that Jurassic Park hadn't done three years earlier. The Lion King was a much bigger hit than I think its number suggests; it was a bona fide global phenomenon only matched at that time by Jurassic Park and not surpassed until Titanic.

I'd probably put it right under all those films. You have to realize they'd all be much higher today. ROTK, as the most recent film on the list, for instance, I imagine would be somewhere around $850-900m.

IA3 is nowhere near those films. As Jiffy said, they'd be much higher nowadays. But their impact was much bigger.

It's their Mamma Mia!

And let's face it, it's also the worst crime Germany has committed since WW2.

Post Re: Intl. Box-Office: Inglourious Basterds is #1 overseas!
FINAL DESTINATION was a smash in the UK.

LOS ANGELES (Hollywood Reporter) - "Inglourious Basterds" logged a second weekend as the top film at the international box office, bolstered by impressive staying power in key markets and No. 1 openings in a handful of new ones.

All told, Quentin Tarantino's World War II opus fought its way to $19.4 million (11.9 million pounds) in 31 territories, raising its international gross to $59.1 million.

It opened at No. 1 in the Netherlands with $1.7 million, and also took the top spot in smaller markets such as Portugal, Denmark, Trinidad and Bulgaria.

It remained No. 1 in France (12-day total: $12.1 million), Germany (9-day: $7.7 million) and Australia (11-day: $5.7 million), and slipped to No. 2 in the U.K. (10-day: $10.8 million).

The new U.K. champ was "The Final Destination," which also ruled the field in North America. The horror sequel earned about $10.1 million from four foreign markets, led by Britain ($5.7 million) and France ($3 million).

"Funny People" opened at No. 3 in Britain with $1.5 million. The film's early international total from three markets is $2.8 million.

"Ice Age 3: Dawn Of The Dinosaurs" earned $15 million from 51 markets, led by Italy with $10.8 million -- the country's biggest opening of the year. The cartoon's foreign total rose to $635.2 million.

"The Hangover" earned $6.3 million from 54 territories, taking its total to $159.5 million.
