I have tentatively set a date of September 30th to jet off to Aussieland in search of permanent work since all the self employed website/tech support work I have been doing locally is finally slowing and I needz to live!
As you should know Ireland is currently a jobs hellhole, you apply for a job they needs 2 years IT experience (which I have) and its so bad you have people with 10 years experience and 12 inch penis's to satisfy the interviewers as competition. In short its shit and the entire country is a sinking ship that must be fled as soon as possible.
I actually got my Aussie work visa back in March but have put it off till work locally dried up so its only now I am going. Anyhoo I still have to talk to a cousin who is back on holiday from Brisbane so until then I shall designate you loons the job of advice. Oh and Loyal sorry I never did that mock up for you I was given a job I couldn't refuse and have been driven like a slave for the past 2 weeks, forgive me!
I'm looking towards Melbourne or Sydney but I'm undecided. I would be glad to hear the views of Gez or Dino on this since they are well................from Australia.

Why didn't you move to Canada?
I feel slighted. Australia? GOD. We're America's neighbour, and we're bigger than Australia.

i think most international students from EU and NA I've spoken to, come here because of the "relaxed" lifestyle Australia represents or/and because we're so isolated.
Also if Gulli is coming for a job, he's better off finding a job in a country that's not in a recession.

Re: Australia Advice
I live pretty tight on spending at the moment to be honest. I'm saving almost everything I earn after I pay back loans and rent. (I hope to go out with 7K euro saved) I have a loan im paying back a €100 a week on because I want to clear it in two years and I'm determined to stick to that.
But when I get to Australia I would like to have maybe 150 dollars AUS a week to spend on having fun and relaxing. So add that to the loan which is 150 AUS I think and you'd have a gauge of where I want to be.
I have been looking at the average wages in the IT industry in Australia and they seem to be around 35K AUS per year for the 2nd level support I would expect to get a job at initially.
Hope that helps.

You have no idea how bad Ireland is, its technically in a depression. Australia looks like paradise in comparison.
EDIT: or you where talking about Canada sorry.

We're not in a recession anymore. We got out of it this quarter, although that won't be tabulated till the quarter is over.

I have applied for a Canadian work visa as well to cover my bases but they work as fast as a bunch of comatose slugs after a night out. The average wait time at the London embassy processing area is 12/24 months.

Re: Australia Advice
Your $150 will go further in Melbourne for fun and relaxing. Definitely. Even though Melbourne is heaps expensive as it is.
However, keep in mind, summer is coming up. Melbourne has much drier weather and lacks the beautiful beaches Sydney has. Also Australian Open and F1 is held in Melbourne, Sydney has other shit.
Melbourne is very easy to get around. The city is blocked, and most things are within walking distance of each other. While Sydney all the good stuff seems to be spread out. Bondi, Kings X, Circular Quay etc.
By the way, do you realise how expensive rent is here?

The rent is ok, its just as bonkers as Ireland so its not a shock I factored it in. Thanks for the tips I appreciate it.

Re: Australia Advice
Working Holiday one, the rest take awhile and I followed the advice of a cousin who works for Quanta's who started out on one. He said if you work hard you'll get sponsored and its pretty plain sailing after that. Since he has lived in Perth for 10 years and started on the Holiday Visa I'll consider his advice solid. The cousin thats just back was on one as well, he just extended it after the first year and is in the process of applying of permanency (I forget the Aussie name for the appplication)
Although seriously if you have input on the best visas and plans (event thought its a little late for me now) I'll happily read it

residency.
Yeah find a sponsor straight away. I think you have a limited time per each employer if you don't get sponsored.

you should consider couchsurfing for the first few days rather than staying in a hostel. re: couchsurfing.com

Oh yes it is. 18% unemployement rate and growing. Banks losing their ratings. Thanks to all the sheep who voted for Zapatero.

New 10-pound Poms snap up tickets to Australia August 6, 2009
A new generation of 10-pound Poms has snapped up bargain airfares to Australia in less than an hour.
A total of 150 one-way tickets to Australia went on sale for just STG10 ($A20) on a first-come, first-served basis on Wednesday, prompting queues of backpackers for days and selling out in 50 minutes.
STA Travel introduced the scheme at eight branches across Britain in conjunction with Tourism Australia and Qantas.
The move was a modern take on the term coined for British citizens who migrated to Australia after World War II.
STA Travel group managing director John Constable was delighted with the response.
"We're especially impressed with the commitment of some hardy Brits who've been camping outside our branches since last week," Constable said.
Among the first to queue up last Friday in Southampton was 27-year-old Danny Davies from Bournemouth, who said he and fellow hopefuls planned to keep in touch and meet up while travelling.
"Since we've been queueing an original 10-pound Pom came over to tell us about her adventures and we all had a picture taken with her, and last night a 30-strong gospel choir came out to serenade us," he told the Daily Mail.
"We've even been given food parcels by members of the public to keep us going."
For Rhiannon McLafferty, 19, and Taran Campbell, 23, their 275km journey from Inverness to Glasgow, where they had been waiting since Monday, paid off.
Campbell told the BBC: "It was well worth the wait. We're going in six weeks' time and are both really excited."
McLafferty said: "It's been great, we've played loads of card games and made some friends ... we've said we should all meet up again."
The tickets to Sydney, Melbourne, Perth, Brisbane or Adelaide were available for anyone with a valid working holiday Visa.
Those who lined up but missed out were given vouchers worth STG50 ($A100) for STA flights and access to a STG459 ($A918) return airfare to Australia.

Im heading to Melbourne on the 21st. I want to thank Dino for his advice I really appreciate it, I have been talking to a cousin who has lived in melbourne for 12 years and I think I have an IT job the moment I go out. Trying to get a college friends van sold so he can come with me, this is proving more difficult.
Anyway, people who are in college, appreciate it a good time to be in college you will likely get out just as the conomy recovers!

A pity the Australian dollar is at yearly highs against the Euro. Good luck.
