 District 9
District 9 Quote: District 9 is a 2009 science fiction thriller film directed by Neill Blomkamp. It was written by Blomkamp and Terri Tatchell, and produced by Peter Jackson and Carolynne Cunningham. The film stars Sharlto Copley, Jason Cope, and David James. The film won the 2010 Saturn Award for Best International Film presented by the Academy of Science Fiction, Fantasy & Horror Films, and was nominated for four Academy Awards in 2010, including Best Picture, Best Adapted Screenplay, Best Visual Effects, and Best Editing.
The story, adapted from Alive in Joburg, a 2005 short film directed by Blomkamp and produced by Sharlto Copley and Simon Hansen, pivots on the themes of xenophobia and social segregation. The title and premise of District 9 were inspired by events that took place in District Six, Cape Town during the apartheid era. The film was produced for $30 million and shot on location in Chiawelo, Soweto, presenting fictional interviews, news footage, and video from surveillance cameras in a part-mock documentary style format. A viral marketing campaign began in 2008, at the San Diego Comic-Con, while the theatrical trailer appeared in July 2009. Released by TriStar Pictures, the film opened to critical acclaim on August 14, 2009, in North America and earned $37 million in its opening weekend. Many saw the film as a sleeper hit for its relatively unknown cast and modest-budget production, while achieving success and popularity during its theatrical run.

 Re: District 9
It's all types of awesome. Whatever you THINK District 9 is, forget it. And how the hell did they make it for 30m, way to go Wingnut.
Not sure what the masses will think because District 9 isn't user friendly for non hardcore scifi geeks.

I've been hearing some comparisons to Robocop recently, would you say those are pretty accurate?

Biggestgeekever wrote: I've been hearing some comparisons to Robocop recently, would you say those are pretty accurate? In terms of splatter and the design of the prawn exoskeleton (as compared to the ED-209), yes. One thing that is missing is the satirical edge Verhoeven brings to sci-fi. I would have liked to have seen some of that in District 9. There's a running joke about the prawn-human sex trade that doesnt really go anywhere. District 9 is so many things and that's one of the reasons I'm not sure general audiences are going to connect. It's a fairly heavy handed allegory about apartheid. It's very Outer Limits in that regard. Then Black Hawk Down shows up, which isn't too surprising as Neil Blomkamp named Ridley Scott as one of his influences during tonight's Q&A. Then there's the spatter. And there's a lot. Not throughout the film mind you. It's mostly splatter free until the final act. Then all hell breaks loose. Oh and I can't forget The Fly. I was pretty surprised tonight. It wasn't what I was expecting at all. I'm curious to hear what you guys think when you see it.

I'm officially seeing it tomorrow. Quote: Security will be VERY tight at this screening. Please DO NOT bring your mobile phones. Simply give the last 4 digits of your mobile number to rep for entry.

 Re: District 9
If District 9 were a stage production, the first 5 rows would need ponchos.
That should run that on the Blu-Ray.

****/**** Christopher's son busting up the warlords via remote controlled robot was pretty cool. So do you think Christopher is coming back in 3 years to rescue his friends or destroy mankind? At my Q&A, Blomkamp said he's started to think about a follow-up but it depends on how successful this one is (duh). He said some insane stuff happened on the mothership when the humans cut their way in, so that's something he'd like to show in a prequel.

 Re: District 9
Well when he returns, how awesome would it be to have the sequel in 3 years?, I would rather just see a rescue along with some more people getting splattered.
Maybe humans planning on stopping it, but a mini war breaks out. Especially in District 10! Blood all over the white tents!

 Re: District 9
Even better the 2nd time around. It was good to not be completely blindsided by the material.
Not sure about the crowd reaction. 2 people seemingly left during the harvesting scene. And the crowd weren't really audible until the splatter gun makes it grand appearance. Then they lost their shit.

 Re: District 9
I don't think I've gone from hating a character to loving them as fast as I did with Wikus. I mean, I was yelling at him in my mind "YOU SON OF A" when he left Christopher... and then he came back!

So that was....completely insane. I cannot believe half the shit I saw go on. And I certainly can't write a single coherent thought past that at this time.

Magnus wrote: However...I think on the substance side, the film sort of lacks. Maybe I was just too focused on the style, but I just felt that the film wasn't really that intellectual, or not as much as I hoped it would. Granted, it easily is the most intellectual action film of the year, but as a sci-fi film, it doesn't really have that much substance. I think a common misconception is going to be that it's true focus is to be a parable of the apartheid. I personally think Neill set out to make an action sci-fi film first, and a social commentary second.

I agree. I think the social commentary is really just a back plot.
