Post The 'What were they thinking when that was nominated' thread
Why do many of you consider Jamie Foxx's performance in Collateral to be that of a supporting actor's calibre? Apparently his nomination in the KJ Movie awards wasn't by a slim margin....it was a defeaning majority. So I ask all of you, what exactly distinguishes a lead actor calibre performance from a supporting actor calibre performance?

Because in my book, Foxx's Collateral was by far and away a lead performance. But I'm willing to listen to others' opinions. Maybe I'm just looking at it all black and white.

I look at it as the story focuses around Cruise. So he's the main character with Foxx's character just playing a supporting role to the main guy.

This is the better place to ask since xiayun and matatonio aren't responding in the other thread...

But, anyways. It's definitely a Lead role. If Cruise almost got the nom for Lead in Collateral, then what the fuck was Foxx? Super-Lead?

You know, I may have been better off just rewatching the Oscar nominations back in January.

And the same should be said of Natalie Portman in both Closer and Garden State.

lol

Seriously, the only two things about which I'm all out upset is the Jamie Foxx scandal, and the fact Incredibles didn't manage a Best Pic (and even then, that's only a disappointment, far from being upset). Hell, none of the movies in my top five made it into the final Best Pic nominations, do you see me complaining about them?

That Foxx thing is bullshit. It just helps prove to me that all I'll be doing if I go to these awards is watching the Oscars.

Putting all Foxx's supporting votes into Best Actor isn't practical since we don't know how people have voted. I bet Foxx didn't get more votes because people are leaving him off from the ballot all together since they, myself included, consider him the LEAD and couldn't find a place in Best Actor category.

Disqualifying Foxx from supporting all together is an option, but that will just mean Highmore will get nominated, which wouldn't be much of a surprise either, and he is nominated in the breakthrough category. It's not as if a deserving small role got snubbed because of it. I'm not happy that Foxx got nominated over Highmore, but in the end, I decided to leave the votes as they are.

xiayun, we still decided on something in the other thread. We decided he was a lead and that he could be nominated for lead.

Why don't we just nominate Natalie Portman 4 times? Hell, how about 8 times. Some people might think she's a man...

I don't see the objection to a revote. I mean, I'd be glad to count since I'm the one who's still belittling you about it. I'm sure sommie and Zingaling would count too...

there ya go.

to me, it doesn't matter how often an actor shows up...what matters is how he's used. an actor could be in every scene of the film, have a speaking role in every scene in the film, go through changes, be billed first, blah blah blah, and not be lead. if the plot isnt being furthered by his actions, but rather his actions are supporting others, he's supporting. Collateral is NOT about a cab driver...it's about an assassin who happens to hijack a cab for the night. He could have picked any cab, any driver, he could have kicked him out and taken the cab, he couldve shot him...it wouldnt have mattered in the grand scheme of things, because Cruise is lead...only what he does (drive around killing people) matters. at least in my opinion. but then again, l wasnt very impressed with him period, so he got no nom from me...
