The Uninvited is a 2009 American remake of the 2003 South Korean horror film A Tale of Two Sisters. It is unrelated to another 2003 Korean horror film and a 1944 American film of the same name.

Excellent little thriller. The acting is top-notch across the board with special kudos to Emily Browning and the plot is one that is actually worthy of the phrase "keeps you guessing until the very end." This is the best horror/thriller of a busy month for the genre and deserved better box office if only to help get Browning more work.

Pretty decent, actually! I wasn't really expecting it to be good, but I do think I was genuinely entertained and surprised by the ending, even if it isn't anything new.

Do you think it's more of a thriller than a horror movie? I do.

Yeah, I agree. It's definitely not a horror movie.

I think what makes the movie work is that it didn't rely on cheap scares; also the acting's pretty good.

Yeah, the acting was very good from everyone. Emily Browning is a much better actor than Odette Yustman, from another "Un" movie this month. On that note, they should have chosen a different title. The Uninvited tells you next to nothing about the movie and sounds too similar to the aforementioned Yustman movie.

I enjoyed this one a great deal. A twisty, stylish, and pulse-pounding horror/suspense film. Emily Browning's performance is superb.

It surpassed my expectations by a wide margin.

You really think it's a horror film at all? I didn't see that. Definitely a suspense/thriller mismarketed as a horror film.

Be sure to cast your vote in the poll.

The original may have been but the remake isn't.

Think I've already mentioned multiple times how mismarketed it was. They were obviously going for a "The Ring" feel with the marketing.

There were definite horror elements -- the ghost scenes, for one. And the Big Creepy House. It's not a balls-to-the-wall HORROR EXTRAVAGANZA, but it is a horror-ish film. I'd put it in the same category as What Lies Beneath and The Others, and I call this category "horror/suspense." ;)

And I have voted in the poll. I am one of the two A's.

THE UNINVITED - 8/10 (A-)

A very pleasant surprise. I'm one of the few who wasn't crazy about the original (Korean film "A Tale of Two Sisters" - a title which they should have kept for the American remake) and I don't generally care for supernatural horror films. But this was very nicely done. It's stylish and well-acted. Emily Browning and Elizabeth Banks are really good.

Another fine example that a remake doesn't always have to be a bad thing (This year's LAST HOUSE ON THE LEFT also comes to mind). This one kept the same basic story but added some welcome touches.

Post Re: The Uninvited [2009]
3/10 -> D-

I thought it sucked. It has nothing on the original which is a superb movie and possibly the best one to come out of the Asian horror factory recently.

The acting is IMO awful. They tried to add some elements to the story, but they didn't mesh very well... Which is a pity, it would've been a nice addition. I watched the Korean movie quite a few times and I'm amazed at how skillfully they managed to have the "ghost" sister interact without any obvious scenes that would point that she's not actually there. American version isn't very good at that and every scene was lame in the setup whenever the "ghost" sister interacted.

I actually wasn't aware this was a remake when my friend and I stared to watch this one. I knew they were remaking the Korean movie, but I thought they were going to keep the original translation (the original isn't actually titled A Tale of Two Sisters). I thought this was an original movie. I was disgusted by the first scene with the psychiatrist as it was awful. The trigger that made me realize this was the remake was the first scene with the ghost sister when she asked about the letters and why the real sister never replied. I then figured it out although they did try to mask the plot quite a bit from the start. I was even more disappointed then. I would prefer a scene by scene remake. Then at least there would be at least some kind of an atmosphere or a style to it. This is uninspiring as you can get.

Surprisingly solid. I still like the original more as a film, though they do feel like completely different movies altogether. It's better than the average film of its kind.

Just saw this. I was pleasantly surprised by how enjoyable it was. Nothing groundbreaking, but if I looked for groundbreaking everytime I watched a movie, I'd be disappointed.

Grade: B+

It's a shitty thriller, but with a pleasant story and decent acting by Banks and Browning.

Hmmm... So you think it's worth watching, if someone has seen the original? I didn't find the Korean version particularly good. It had nice acting and direction, but a sloppy story, in which they decided to redo all the most famous plot twists they had seen in American movies in the last 10 years.

I do. I liked it better than A Tale of Two Sisters myself. Maybe you wouldn't care for it, but I found it well-done and it's better than most of the PG-13 "horror" movies released these days.
