Spielberg´s Munich Olympics Film will get a 2005 release

Spielberg's Munich Olympics Film Set for Dec. 23

Steven Spielberg plans a summer start for his delayed movie about the massacre of Israeli athletes at the 1972 Munich Olympics, and a Dec. 23 release in theaters.

The untitled project, a co-production between Universal Pictures and Spielberg's DreamWorks, had been set to go before the cameras last year. Casting was under way when Spielberg decided to have "Angels in America" playwright Tony Kushner do a rewrite on the project, on which writers Eric Roth ("Forrest Gump") and Charles Randolph ("The Interpreter") also had worked.

With the project postponed, Spielberg moved quickly to begin filming his adaptation of H.G. Wells' "War of the Worlds," starring Tom Cruise . Paramount will release it June 29.

Details about the Olympics film have been carefully guarded. Universal will release it domestically. The studio's year-end lineup is potentially formidable because it also includes such films as Peter Jackson's "King Kong" (Dec. 14) and the screen version of the Mel Brooks musical "The Producers" (Dec. 21).

The material here could make for a very powerful film with Steven at the helm and thus, it must be looked at as a serious contender for some Oscar gold.

I am STOKED.

Screw Indy, THIS is the project that I was disappointed in that was delayed.

I think the film is called Vengence.

Last time "Berg" gave us a big popcorn flick and a serious drama in the same year we got Jurassic Park and Schindler's List.

It is kind of dumb to be predicting summer and fall box office gross, but people do it because it's "fun" and they are bored. It's really no different.

Nobody really takes it too seriously.

If the output is even half as good as that one-two punch, then we're in for a hell of a year [-o< .

He's won two Oscars already, they won't give him yet another.

Plus, though I doubt this will be much of a political film (it's Spielberg...), if it does, whoa, The Passion's controversy will pale in comparison.

Expect some nasty stuff to go around if that is the case (though again, I doubt it).


Just personally, I could care less for the film. Sounds dull and pretentious. I won't pay for't.

Easily. Real life is usually dull and sometimes pretentious.

I don't think that the Munich incedent was by any means pretentious

The movie was suppose to be called " Vengeance " ( stupid ) and suppose to star Eric Bana, I hope he's still involved.

CINDERELLA MAN

Spielberg is making films fast as hell,its like he thinks he will die soon so he will make as many films as he can.Not that im complaining,the more the better IMO.

Actually last time we got The Lost World and Amistad.

*shudder*

Amistad was a very good film,and it earned him a DGA nomination.

I also forgot Minority Report and Catch Me If You Can... well one was a dramedy. Both were still excellent though.

Haha, took it right out of my mouth. Then again, if War of the Worlds is on par with Jurrasic Park 2, half the users on here will drink the kool aid.

No, but the idea of making a film about it, and the way the filmmaker will do it. I mean, come on...

Also, the plot will have to discuss this:

-Israelis as the victims. Comes fully equipped with relatives weeping over the dead, sad music in the background, etc.

-Arab Palestinian Terrorists. Not much sympathy for Palestine there...

-Complete incompetence of the part of the German police (specifically Bayern's), who were absolutely not prepared for such an event (who would have thought?).


Anyways, wtf is he thinking doing a project like this at this time? Does he know how volatile the situation is? Schindler's List was passable because the Holocaust is off-limits to most critics. Israel is absolutely not.


If Spielberg somehow makes this a politically correct drama, that'd be even worse. The truth of the matter is that a group of terrorists really did open fire on and killed Israeli atheletes, and the German police really was completely incompetent. Making a film on this subject is just...inappropriate at this time. But hey, he's a billionaire who owns a studio, so what does it matter, right?


Btw, as a sidenote, I have taken a second (or third, or fourth) look at Spielberg's films recently, and wow, it's different from childhood. I can hardly stand Jurassic Park, Indiana Jones is laughably dumb, and some of the other films seem disjointed. Not good...
