"DreamWorks/Paramount's "Transformers: Revenge of the Fallen" blanketed the international circuit during the weekend, recording an explosive $162 million from 9,910 screens -- a per-screen average of $16,347 -- in 58 markets for an overseas total of $181.6 million. The film's global gross is $363.2 million.

Still, the sci-fi action sequel to "Transformers," director Michael Bay's 2007 blockbuster that grossed $389 million overseas, failed to notch a record for a foreign boxoffice launch.

Disney's "Pirates of the Caribbean: At World's End" drew $251.1 million during its first six days on the international circuit in May 2007. Two years ago, Warner Bros.' "Spider-Man 3" recorded $230.5 million in six days, and the same studio's 2006 release "Harry Potter and the Order of the Phoenix" registered an opening of $193 million.

"Transformers" actually opened the previous frame -- a week before its domestic bow -- in the U.K. and Japan, grossing $19.6 million from 833 locations. Its initial saturation blitz overseas easily qualifies as 2009's biggest foreign boxoffice weekend, besting by $60 million the year's second-largest introduction, Sony's "Angels & Demons," in 96 markets in mid-May.

With a reported $200 million price tag, it is critical that "Transformers," a special effects-laden saga of shape-shifting robots co-starring Shia LaBeouf and Megan Fox, draws significant numbers overseas. So far, that is happening in spades.

"Transformers" was No. 1 in all markets opened, Paramount said, with China topping the list with an eye-popping $21.9 million from 1,000 sites, the market's highest opening-weekend gross for an English-language title. Korea contributed $14.9 million from 1,038 situations, Australia came up with $12.9 million from 242 spots, Russia produced $11.8 million from 564 spots and Germany contributed $8.9 million from 670 locations.

Asia action was particularly intense: Opening-weekend records were set in the Philippines, Thailand, Malaysia, Singapore, Hong Kong and Taiwan, where "Transformers" played in 62 locations for a per-screen average of more than $98,000.

In second place during the weekend was Sony's action vehicle "Terminator Salvation," which generated $10.4 million from 7,470 screens in 70-plus markets for an international cume of $220 million. Third overall was Warners' comedy "The Hangover," which benefited from strong weekends in the U.K., France and Australia. Its overall gross was $10.1 million from 1,250 sites in 29 territories for an international cume of $46.2 million.

At No. 4 was Disney's "The Proposal," which is showing traction overseas. Its weekend estimate is $7.2 million from 1,650 screens in 13 markets for an early cume of $22.7 million. Finishing fifth was Fox's "Night at the Museum: Battle of the Smithsonian," with $5.2 million generated from 4,000 sites in 62 markets for a foreign total of $202.3 million.

The year's first half appears to have been strong for most major studios, particularly Sony, Fox and Paramount. Mark Zucker, president of Sony Pictures Releasing International, said overall boxoffice for Sony films year-to-date is nearing $875 million. With several strong titles in the hopper, he expects Sony to fly past the $1 billion-gross mark by the end of next month.

For its part, Fox said it anticipates surpassing the $1 billion benchmark as early as this week, when the studio saturates the overseas circuit with "Ice Age: Dawn of the Dinosaurs." With many of the heavyweight summer titles from the big six studios still to come, 2009's first-half action portends a strong year overseas for the studios.

Sony's biggest grosser of 2009, with a foreign cume of $337.5 million, is "Angels & Demons," which grossed 5.1 million during the weekend from 4,215 situations in 75 markets. Pixar/Disney's "Up" raised its early overseas cume to $47.1 million with a $4.7 million weekend at 2,064 screens in 15 territories.

Universal's "State of Play" registered a No. 3 France opening and a weekend total of $4.3 million from 1,600 sites in 40 markets for an overseas cume of $41.5 million. Disney's "Hannah Montana: The Movie" drew $3 million from 2,232 screens in 35 markets for a cume of $56.1 million, and Sony's Jack Black-Michael Cera comedy "Year One" generated $2.4 million in its second weekend from 583 screens in five markets for a total of $4.4 million.

In France, U.S. titles took the top three spots, but Mars Distribution's "So Near," a comedy about a husband coping with pushy in-laws, grabbed the No. 4 spot in its second week with $1 million from 394 situations, down 48% from its opening round. Its market cume is $3.5 million.

In the No. 5 spot was "Lascars," an animation title based on a French TV cartoon series, which grossed $750,000 from 290 dates, down 50% from its opener. Its cume is $2.6 million.

Other international cumes: Fox's "X-Men Origins: Wolverine," $184.6 million; Universal's "Land of the Lost," $7 million; Mandate International/Universal's "Drag Me to Hell," $20 million; Fox's "Dragonball Evolution," $48 million; New Line's "Ghosts of Girlfriends Past," $16 million; Focus Features/Universal's "Coraline," $36.1 million; Fox/Pathe's "Slumdog Millionaire," $218 million; New Line's "17 Again," $64.5 million (vs. $62.5 million domestic); Fox's "12 Rounds," $5 million; New Line's "He's Just Not That Into You," $72.4 million; Fox's "Taken," $74.6 million (including non-Fox territories); and New Line's "Inkheart," $40.3 million. Amazing numbers for Transformers 2 all around! This is definitely making $800+ million worldwide, though overseas Ice Age 3 and Harry Potter will still handily beat it.

The Hangover is doing amazingly well overseas considering US comedy success stories often do't translate to overseas success. I mean Wedding Crasheres made less than $80 million overseas, whereas The Hangover could hit $400 million worldwide!

Terminator: Salvation is hanging in there. $375 million WW is still within reach.

I'm surprised He's Just Not That Into You hasn't done better overseas. I expected at least $100 million OS...

I'm glad State of Play is doing better OS than it did domestically. It hope it can still approach $100 million WW.

Angels & Demons coninues to be pretty huge overseas. While it won#t even end up in the year's Top 10 domestically (maybe not even Top 15), it has a shot to end up in the Top 5 of 2009 overseas... Looks to end up with about $350-360 million OS.

About The Hangover, although I haven't seen it, I think worldwide people experience drinking more than crashing weddings for sex. Which in itself is a no-go area for most people. Not to mention, I didn't find that brand of humor particularly funny and maybe others too didn't.

So it is looking at around 420M OS total. Not bad but not great as well. I guess it fell hard in most markets.

Post Re: Intl. Box-Office: Transformers 2 at $383 million WW!!
Quote:
Fox's "Ice Age: Dawn of the Dinosaurs" seized the No. 1 spot on the foreign circuit during the July 4 weekend as the third installment of the family-oriented series drew an estimated $148 million from 11,652 screens in 101 markets.

The opening-weekend tally set an overseas record for an animation film and was the sixth-biggest for any film. It also is the largest foreign introduction of a 3D title, said Paul Hanneman, co-president of Fox theatrical international.

Hanneman also said that the 18% of screens that showed "Ice Age" in 3D (2,126) provided 34% of the boxoffice take ($51 million). Early returns from U.K. show the 3D version in the No. 1 market spot, with the conventional theatrical edition ranked No. 2.

The threequel set overseas records for biggest weekend openings in 16 markets including Russia, Mexico and Brazil. Opening-weekend records for an animation title were set in 11 other territories including France, India and Greece. The top individual market was Russia, with $18.9 million.

The huge foreign opening more than doubled the $67.5 million No. 1 debut of the previous installment, 2006's "Ice Age: The Meltdown."

The "Ice Age" series about the adventures of prehistoric animals including an acorn-loving squirrel is more popular internationally than in North America. 2002's "Ice Age" drew $206 million in overseas boxoffice versus $176.4 million in North America, and "The Meltdown" pulled $457 million abroad versus $195.3 million domestic.

Also opening day-and-date with its No. 3 domestic bow was "Public Enemies," starring Johnny Depp as John Dillinger, which finished No. 4 overseas.

Universal released director Michael Mann's Depression-era crime drama in only five markets -- the U.K., Denmark, Mexico, Greece and Serbia/Montenegro -- for $5.3 million from 958 screens. U.K. action dominated with a $3.6 million debut, No. 3 in the market, from 458 situations.

In general, American features dominated overseas more than usual during the weekend. For example, the top five films in the key markets of the U.K., France and Germany were U.S. titles. In the Paris area, Woody Allen's "Whatever Works" finished No. 3 behind "Ice Age" and "Transformers: Revenge of the Fallen."

No. 2 on the weekend was DreamWorks/Paramount's "Transformers," which opened in two smaller markets (Pakistan and Vietnam) and bagged $55.3 million overall on the weekend from 9,546 locations in 62 territories.

Since it opened internationally June 19, director Michael Bay's sci-fi action sequel has grossed $298 million overseas, just $91 million shy of the $389 million the 2007 original bagged in its entire foreign run. The sequel's worldwide tally is $591.5 million.

Warner Bros.' "The Hangover" laughed all the way to the No. 3 weekend spot with $8.7 million from 1,975 screens in 30 markets, off just 13% from the prior weekend. The comedy's cume stands at $61.5 million.

Fifth was Sony's "Terminator Salvation," starring Christian Bale. The latest in the futuristic action series drew $5 million from 4,590 in 63 territories, for a cume of $228.7 million from all markets including some that Sony doesn't handle.

Disney's Sandra Bullock-Ryan Reynolds comedy "The Proposal" grossed $4.2 million from 1,754 screens in 15 markets for a cume of $29.5 million. Tied at $2.6 million each were Sony's "Angel & Demons," which played 2,670 locations in 62 territories, and "Disney's "Hannah Montana: The Movie," playing 2,040 situations in 28 markets. Cume for "Angels" is $342.2 million; "Hannah Montana" stands at $59.9 million.

Pixar/Disney's "Up" pushed its foreign cume to $50.8 million, thanks to a $1.8 million weekend at 1,350 sites in 15 markets.

Other international cumes: Sony's "Year One," $7 million; Paramount's "Star Trek," $125 million; Fox's "12 Rounds," $5.1 million; Universal's "State of Play," $43.8 million; Fox's "Dragonball: Evolution," $48.4 million; Focus Features/Universal's "Coraline," $38.1 million; Fox's "Notorious," $6.9 million; and Pathe/Fox's "Slumdog Millionaire," $218.4 million.

Ica age has always been an overseas franchise. It will most likely gross around 540-570M worldwide, which is awesome for a 90M movie.

Big Question, does anyone think that The Hangover has a chance to beat There's Something About Mary's 11 year record of the biggest R Rated Straight Comedy WW?

I think Potter has a chance of topping SM3 since it is opening in like 95% of markets. Although the question is will they count Wed-Thur numbers OS has part of the weekend?

I think Ice Age 3 is going for $450+ million overseas with a shot at $500 million, even with Harry Potter on its heels. I think both can co-exist in the overseas markets. And dammit, that Russian number is simply astonishing. I think it'll break $45 million there.

Transformers: Revenge of the Fallen fell hard, but that was very expected. It is still a fucking tremendous overseas number and it is looking at $770-790 million WW!

The Hangover is doing VERY well overseas for an US R-rated comedy (most of them fail OS). It'll get close to $400 million WW, but will probably fall short by $10-20 million.

Star Trek finally reached $125 million OS. Looks like it'll top out with around $380 million WW which is sitll a great great number for it. I think that the sequel will top $600 million WW.

Terminator: Salvation's chances at $250 million OS start to vanish. However, it still has Mexico ahead, so the very least it'll make OS is $240 million.

Angels & Demons will soon pass $350 million OS. Damn impressive too.

that's just so random. Especially with TF2 still doing huge business. Ice Age 3, the biggest animated overseas opener ever? Hard to believe.

Does anyone know what the highest grossing film in Venezuela is? Cuz it looks like Up is a contender for that. It's having amazing legs there.

1 $958,811 - 89 - $10,773 - $1,184,736 1

"With "Ice Age: Dawn of the Dinosaurs" monopolizing family filmgoers from Uruguay to China -- easily replicating its No. 1 overseas showing last round -- it was open season for R-rated newcomer "Bruno" over the weekend with audiences in 28 foreign territories seeking raunchier fare.

While third-ranked "Bruno" bagged $25 million on the weekend, the "Ice Age" digital animation threequel from 20th Century Fox grossed $101.9 million from 12,057 screens in 102 markets, down from the $151.7 million generated from 11,791 screens in 101 territories in its opening launch the prior weekend.

"Dawn of the Dinosaurs' " strictly 3D China debut drew an estimated $5.3 million from 340 sites, elevating the film's overall international total to $322.6 million, $134.4 million shy of the $457 million total tallied by the biggest offshore grosser of the series so far, 2006's "Ice Age: The Meltdown."

The Sacha Baron Cohen comedy about a flamboyantly gay Austrian fashion correspondent in Los Angeles who shocks unsuspecting interviewees opened simultaneously with its No. 1 domestic debut at 2,278 screens overseas, according to "Bruno's" three key foreign distributors: Universal (which is also releasing the film in North America), Sony and Mandate International.

Cohen, a British comedian, made his international mark three years ago with his first mockumentary, "Borat." For a comedy, "Borat" via Fox did especially well abroad drawing a total of $133.1 million versus $129.2 million domestically.

The eight Universal territories (1,435 screens) playing "Bruno" were dominant, providing 80% of its total weekend tally. Particularly strong were the U.K. and Ireland, where the comedy opened No. 1 with $8 million from 456 sites, a record bow for an "18-rated" film in the U.K. Australia also did especially well, bagging $5.7 million from 334 screens, 55% larger than the comparable "Borat" opening in the market.

Germany contributed $2.8 million from 469 locations while Bruno's "native" country, Austria, produced $627,000 from just 76 sites, for a per-screen average of nearly $7,500. All Universal-handled territories for "Bruno" opened over the weekend; Sony and Mandate Int'l. will release the comedy in 30 foreign markets over the next few months. A France opening via Sony is due July 22.

The 16 mostly smaller markets handled by Mandate, including Denmark, Finland, Norway, Sweden and German-speaking Switzerland, produced $3.75 million from 450 sites or $8,333 per screen. Sony chipped in with 1.2 million from 375 screens Spain, Greece and Portugal.

The early "Bruno" returns may be good news for Universal, which has collected $600 million in 2009 foreign boxoffice as of the weekend. That trails Sony's $890 million total as of July 5, and Disney's $630 million as of July 10.

Disney expects to cross the $1 billion overseas boxoffice mark for the 14th consecutive year by late September or October. Fox passed the milestone last week, the first of the big six studios to do so.

With "Transformers: Revenge of the Fallen" still in high gear, Paramount is expected to shoot past the $1 billion overseas over the weekend. Warner Bros. says it anticipates crossing $1 billion sometime during the run of "Harry Potter and the Half-Blood Prince," which saturates the international circuit beginning Wednesday.

The "Transformers" sequel from director Michael Bay opened in India ($1.3 million from 270 sites), claimed the No. 1 spots in Italy and Korea, and generated $31.5 million on the weekend from 8,226 screens in 59 territories, enough for a No. 2 ranking overall. Foreign gross since June 19 stands at $363.9 million, just $25.1 million shy of the original's entire overseas gross.

Tied for No. 4 was Universal's "Public Enemies," directed by Michael Mann, which drew $7.5 million from 1,646 locations in 17 markets for a cume of $16.4 million. The Johnny Depp vehicle opened No. 2 in France with $3.8 million garnered from 473 screens. The period crime drama has yet to play 47 overseas territories.

Also registering $7.5 million was Warner Bros.' "The Hangover," which played 1,931 screens in 33 territories for a solid international cume, especially for a comedy, of $74.7 million.

Thanks to solid starts in Brazil, South Africa, the Ukraine and Spain, Disney's comedy "The Proposal," co-starring Sandra Bullock and Ryan Reynolds, finished No. 5 on the weekend, with $7 million from 1,818 sites in 19 markets for an overseas cume of $40.7 million.

Summit International's "Knowing," a sci-fi mystery title starring Nicolas Cage, opened No. 3 in Japan via local distributor Toho-Towa at 320 screens, grossing $3.1 million. International cume now stands at $86.8 million.

Topping the Japan charts with $5.3 million extracted from 409 screens was Toho's opening of "Gokusen the Movie," based on the Japanese manga and tv series about a fighting but compassionate schoolteacher. No. 4 in the market was Toho's teen baseball drama "Rookies," which has accumulated a total of $82.8 million in Japan alone since May 30.

In France, Woody Allen's comedy "Whatever Works," from Mars Distribution, collected $850,000 in its second round at 221 locations, down 50% from its opener. Market cume is $3 million. Pathe's "L'Elegance du Herisson" (The Elegance of the Hedgehog), based on Muriel Barberry's best-selling novel about a plump concierge in a deluxe Parisian residence, drew $1 million from 290 locations.

Other international cumes: Disney's "Up," $52.5 million; Sony's "Year One," $8.7 million; Fox's "Night at the Museum: Battle of the Smithsonian," $209.1 million; Sony's "Angels & Demons," $345.9 million; Universal's "State of Play," $46.4 million; Sony's "Terminator Salvation," $232.8 million (including non-Sony territories); Disney's "Hannah Montana: The Movie," $64.4 million; Universal's "Land of the Lost," $ 7.8 million; Paramount's "Star Trek," $125.6 million; Mandate Int'l./Universal's "Drag Me To Hell," $24 million; Pathe/Fox's "Slumdog Millionaire," $218.7 million; Universal's "Last House on the Left," $8.7 milllion; Fox's "X-Men Origins: Wolverine," $184.8 million; Sony's "The Taking of Pelham 1 2 3," $5.8 million; Focus Features/Universal's "Coraline," $38.8 million; and DreamWorks Animation/Paramount's "Monsters vs. Aliens," $175.7 million (thanks to a fourth-place, $1.35 million opening in Japan at 397 sites).
