Loved it. Very funny with great kill scenes. Exactly what you want.

There have been horror films with good acting. Just because slashers tend to have bad acting doesn't mean I can automatically ignore that and not take it into account when giving a grade.

A ridiculous fun-filled romp, that both adopts a rather serious and dark tone, and yet allows for a little humor to accompany plenty of gruesome murders and mind-less violence. The acting all around is considerably better than I expect, in a normal movie I would call it very mediocre performances, but considering most of the characters are designed simply as tools to make you cringe at their death, the actors due a pretty good job. The script is...well barely there. Not much dialogue take place, but the story is strong with the sequence of events flowing well and perfect pacing, not to long but not to short, its' just right. Despite all these positive attributes it is an utterly unambitious film, that's perfectly content with being nothing more than a rehash of a very generic film.

FRIDAY THE 13TH - 5/10 ( C )

Serviceable but extremely disappointing. As a horror fan this seemed like an orgasm waiting to happen, so imagine my surprise by the lack of excitement to be had here. The kills are unimaginative and dull and the whole movie is by the books. It's like they were checking horror movie cliche's off on a list while making it. I really don't know how they could have screwed this up. There's no reason for this movie not to be a blast. I had extremely high expectations, especially since I loved THE TEXAS CHAINSAW MASSACRE (2003). I doubt I'll be as letdown by a movie all year.

Now, I may sound like I hated it, but I didn't. It's just not even close to the horror "masterpiece" it looked like it would be. As a reboot of the series it works, but it brings absolutely nothing new to the table and, like has been stated in other reviews, it's just like all of the other FRIDAY THE 13TH movies. The only difference is that this has a bigger budget that they don't take advantage of. This seemed like it could have been made for cheap since there are so many smaller-budget horror films out there that look gorgeous, yet this had more than ten times the budget. I was expecting some beautiful cinematography like in the Platinum Dunes remake of THE TEXAS CHAINSAW MASSACRE, but there was really nothing special to see here.

It looked like the best Friday film in years, hardly a masterpiece, in that sense, it was the best since the 4th, 24 years ago. Wow there are some real F13 Fanboys in here.

I thought it was okay, actually. Nice campy fun with my biggest gripe being the scares werent there much in the second half. Too many scenes where the victim would open a curtain, box, etc and be relieved to see nothing there. I mean really.....there was A LOT of those situations in this film, be a little more fucking creative, jeez.

Seriously, Jason is so lucky that so many random things buzz or make creeks, otherwise people would never notice a 7foot tall monster enter the only door in a 5 by 5 room in there peripherals.

How any horror fan can enjoy this is beyond my understanding. It's a lame attempt at a slasher. There is nothing new here, and there is no quality to be seen in any part - acting, story, directing, etc...

FRIDAY THE 13TH (2009) - 7/10 (B-)

I actually enjoyed this quite a bit more on DVD. I definitely think the extra 10 minutes of additional footage helped. There were some nice changes and it just went down easier this time. Before seeing it again on DVD I'd have given it a 5/10 ( C ), but I guess after getting over the massive disappointment I originally felt I was able to enjoy it now for what it was. It's not as great as it had the potential to be, and the whole traditional campers/camp counselors storyline is missed, but it's enjoyable enough. I'm not convinced I'd have come around just watching the original cut again. This version just felt tighter and less dull.

I hope the eventual sequel is an improvement.

This was completely uninteresting in almost every possible way and I was actually pretty bored by the last third-ish.

I thought it was odd how whenever there seemed to be a "scary" sequence in the first half or so of the movie it was intercut with other characters doing something else unrelated then in the homestretch when you'd think there'd be intercutting to the different characters evading Jason we just followed one until there section was done then picked up with other characters already onto a new location or something. The flow just seemed very off to me, but I'm sure the fact that it just wasn't scary or exciting through and through had something to do with that.

However adequate this was (technically, not creatively) compared to other slashers I still don't see what there is to like here. There is nothing memorable about this movie, it's just a complete rehash of tons of things done before only this one is newer. That's it.

The only genuine surprise was the assumed "Final Girl" getting a machete through the torso, but by that point I just wanted the movie to be over so my level of caring was at a low. And it really did seem that Jason was killing people who came after the pot plants, which was...odd.

Lame movie not worth the time.

I was just about to pop in the Blu-ray in when I noticed something. Why is "The Killer Cut" rated? Why did they go through the trouble of getting an R-rating for the longer cut? If they got away with more and still got the R, why didn't they just put the 106 minute version in theaters?

Well, I have to give the movie credit. It's better than the original. However in this case, that's kind of like saying Jaws 3 is better than Jaws 4. Neither films are any good, but at least one is watchable compared to the other.

Like Malcolm I stopped caring in the third act. I think I figured out why they cut the length down. 106 minutes is too fucking long for a slasher film. There's only so much "guy stalking with a machete" you can take before it starts to get boring. On the plus side the film did get me to care about the brother and sister and they're the only reason why I don't think this one is a particular waste of time. They kept me invested for most of the running length. Them and tits. Tits always help. But everything else just felt ordinary (minus Jason being an expert archer).

And the last scene, I'm still not sure what to think of it. I understand the reason it's in there, but even people who haven't seen the original could see what was coming, so why keep it in there? It's the only good moment the original had. Here, it's not scary, but I guess it's necessary?

Yeah, I agree that the ending here isn't scary. The ending in the original is one of the scariest movie scenes ever. It was handled so much better there. Maybe it didn't work here because, like said, it was expected. But it also wasn't well executed.

I seen this on the first day of release. I loved it.

I love Marcus Nispels The Texas Chainsaw Massacre, it's one of my favourite horror films ever, and the best remake so far. His style shows in this movie, but he does allow it to be more campy, like Friday the 13th should be. Texas Chainsaw was definately supposed to be intense, brutal and like an endurance test. This was intended to be lighter, and it was.

The cast were great at doing what-they-had-to-do. I loved how the whole first batch were killed off before we moved onto the other batch. This was a nice twist, so that the film wasn't here's some teens, some killed off, then they fight back. A pleasant surprise. Some of the kills were terrific, the lake scene, the sleeping bag and when Jason runs towards the girl at the tree, awesome. Jason is bad ass, like a hunter who crawls in underground tunnels to pop up on his victims. The comedy was bang on and go laughs from the audience, especially from Travis Van Winkle screaming like a bitch!

I can't wait for the sequel, which i think will be an improvement. Marcus Nispel will be busy with Conan, so i wonder who Platinum Dunes will hand the reigns to. Maybe the director of The Texas Chainsaw Massacre The Beginning.

Well, hopefully not...

I'm changing my grade. I've tried watching this twice on Blu-ray and just can't get through it again. It's dull - uninteresting characters and a complete lack of suspense. I think it only mildly passes thanks to Derek Mears' Jason.

I was hoping it'd get a bit better on DVD...

I have trouble even getting through the first 25 minutes. I know that's the section where everyone raved - and Jason is bloody awesome - but that bunch of teens might be my least favorite in twelve films. I felt embarrassed watching it. The pace was slow, it wasn't tense, and with all of the sex/drugs talk, I felt like I was watching a parody of Friday the 13th more than the real thing.

It comes pretty close to self-parody many times. The only problem is that they appear to take themselves seriously (something FvsJ didn't do a least). I mean it's the F13-essentials: tits and blood (though the killings could have been more inventive).

The Fridays had tits and blood, but they were never - and I say this as a guy who doesn't like the originals all that much - focused entirely on that.

The remake is working from the Friday cliché, not necessarily what it really is. It's also never trying to be a particularly good movie, which annoys the hell out of me. You have money. You have decent people behind the camera. You've managed to make your villain intimidating again. Stop fucking around with the juvenile bullshit and try to be scary.

Also...the prologue is too long for a prologue.


I did like the surprise of killing that one main girl, though. That took me aback.


And I agree about the fact that they could have made it better. I mean, I consider Nispel's TCM remake pretty terrific, so...

But I'm not mad, the series has never been really good anyway, IMO. Now if they fuck up NOES....count me mad. Very very mad.
