Red Cliff II should hit 60m after 3/4 more weeks. Very nice.

Re: Japan Box Office (09) May 16-17
http://www.hollywoodreporter.com/hr/too ... /Japan.jspMassive opening for Rookies. 13m is about the most you will see, very few films go higher. I believe only Ponyo and Indiana Jones opened to that level last year. Rookies is a very popular tv show. Remember how well Boys Over Flowers did last year? Another tv show with it's finale taken to the big screen. No.2 for the year (85m total) behind Ponyo (170m). Angels & Demons is doing very well, 30m is assured. Mid 30's most likely, but with some luck, could reach near 40m. Soft opening for Star Trek, but not bad. Red Cliff II took a hit this week, but 60m is still a lock.

Re: Japan Box Office (09) May 30-31 - Rookies Score
If Rookies: Graduation can manage similar legs as Boys Over Flowers Finale (not sure about the fanbase, I know Boys Over Flowers would be mostly women though, while Rookies appears to be males maybe), 100m might just be in play. Which would be very huge considering only Ponyo on the Cliff by the Sea, Howl's Moving Castle, and HP3 have been the only films to do so in the past 6 years. Two being givens since they were Miyazaki, and Potter was a given as well with it's popularity still high at the time.

Two others which came close in recent years... Pirates Of The Caribbean 3: At World’s End - $91,119,039 Pirates Of The Caribbean 2: Dead Man’s Chest - $88m

Re: Japan Box Office (09) May 30-31 - Rookies Score
http://www.hollywoodreporter.com/hr/too ... /Japan.jspJune 6-7 Rookies drops less than 15% it's second weekend to 10.6m (massive, bigger than Boys Over Flower's opening weekend, Red Cliff II's opening, etc), 33.6m total after only 9 days in theatres. 100m is certainly a possibility now, if not a near lock. Sharp drops for everything else. June 13-14 numbers will be released soon enough.

Re: Japan Box Office (09) June - Rookies, 100m+? Likely.
It probably topped T4's opening, which had previews.

Re: Japan Box Office (09) June - Rookies, 100m+? Likely.
http://www.hollywoodreporter.com/hr/too ... /Japan.jspJune 13-14 Great opening for Terminator 4 (2nd biggest this year), the wonderful start might hurt Transformers 2 this weekend a bit. Rookies has another strong hold, 50m after just 3 weeks, with a PTA of 19K. So Rookies added roughly 16m over for week 3. Very, very nice. It'll also become the no.1 film of the year (passing Red Cliff II after this weekend too, should be around 60/61m I think).

And Transformers 2 disappoints. An opening of about 6m isn't bad, just...very meh, and it's going to mean 20/25 will be the final gross most likely. Down from the original too.

Highly unlikely it can match the original's total gross. Terminator IV's drop wasn't so bad, and it'll gross over 30m now. Angels and Demons continues it's solid run as well crossing 30m. Rookies continues to dominate and soars past 60m, and should be over 70m after next weekend. If Rookies continues it's current pace (dropping about 20% week to week), it's run may look like this: 1st week - 12.7 2nd week - 34.4 3rd week - 50.3 4th week - 62.3 5th week - 72.5 6th week - 80 7th - 85.5, 8th - 88.5, 9th - 90.5 The last ffew weekends have had two pretty big openers, so it could pull some sub 20% drops along the way. Either way, 100m is looking pretty good.

Re: Japan Box Office (09) June - Rookies, 100m+? Likely.
http://www.hollywoodreporter.com/hr/too ... /Japan.jspEvangelion is a popular anime, and debuting at No.1 with just 120 screens shows that. A huge 45,000 PTA. Good hold for Rookies again as it passes 70m. Transformers 2 sees the biggest drop in the top 10. Doubtful it can reach 30m, which Terminator 4 is heading for now.

Why only 120 screens, though?!

Not sure to be honest. Similar films seem to get around 300/350 screens. Maybe it's currently in a limited release or something.

Re: Japan Box Office (09) June - Rookies, 100m+? Likely.
It's the biggest since Wall-E which opened back in December, and it'll remain the biggest until HP6 in the coming weeks. While the Potter films keep grossing less and less, it's certainly not going to fall that low. 50+ should happen I would think, probably 60ish to challenge Red Cliff II for the No.2 spot for the year so far.

I think Avatar has a great chance of becoming the first Hollywood film in ages to cross $100 million in Japan. It has very much going for it there.

Yes, sci-fi movies do really well here. AI, Minority Report are clear examples. Though then there's King Kong, Memoires of a Geisha, Transformers....all movies u expect to do well here but didn't

Transformers because it was americanized, same with Memoirs.

July 4-5 http://www.hollywoodreporter.com/hr/too ... /Japan.jspNothing too exciting. Decent holds all around, with Evangelion doing very well in it's small release. It has potential to hit 30m I think. And I'm a little worried about Rookies reaching 100m now. It's been holding just fine, but it needs some stronger holds this month.

Re: Japan Box Office (09) July
HP should shake things up next weekend. Any chance of a double digit opening. I have rarely seen one without previews(Both Indy and T4 did it with previews).

Re: Japan Box Office (09) July
It opens on the 15th, which will be thursday there I believe, so the 2-Day (films open on saturday in Japan) will be deflated some, but double digits should happen.
It would be the third this year, impressive. Though, keep in mind the Potter films keep decreasing in Japan.
