20. Moulin Rouge
An overkill of visuals and music, this is one of the most confusing yet beautiful movies I ever saw. It's the kind of picture that divides movie goers into passionate lovers or equally passionate haters. Nicole Kidman deserved the Oscar for this one instead of the Hours. A breathtaking performance in a breathtaking movie. Those Aussie director's know how to do it.
19. The Untouchables
It may not have the critical following like GoodFellas or Godfather, it's more the popcorn version of a mob movie, but certainly a perfect popcorn movie. With a rousing score by Morricone, brilliant performances, a faithfully recreation of the 30s Chicago and David Mamet's wonderful crafted script this is as much fun as you can get in a movie.
18. Lost in Translation
Oh, how I loved those two characters. Bill Murray is perfect and should have won the oscar. His chemistry with Scarlett is sizzling, they light up the screen when they are together. I didn't want this love story to end, yet Coppola ends it in a perfect way and avoids the cliché humping scene. Movie magic...
17. Fargo
The Coen brother's best work is a bizarrely funny black comedy with awesome performances by Frances McDormand and William H. Macy. So many scenes are funny yet disturbing at the same time. And you'll never see a shredder the same way.
16. The Shawshank Redemption
Deservingly in the Top 3 of the IMDb listing. It is a beautiful tale about hope and friendship propelled by screen-bursting performances of Robbins and Freeman. Too bad people realized too late what a masterpiece this one is. It certainly deserved lots and lots of those little golden statues
15. The Adventures of Robin Hood
The ultimate popcorn movie and the best screen version of the Robin Hood tale. Errol Flynn is pitch-perfect, de Havilland stunningly beautiful and the direction lighthanded. Even today the action scenes are brilliant and entertaining as hell

14. Almost Famous
The essential music movie. (Sorry, I'm not the Spinal Tap guy) Cameron Crowe delivers a fine-acted and wonderfully told about growing up in the seventies. Being a writer, the story certainly appeals to me more than to others, but you can't deny its appeal. And the "Tiny Dancer"-scene in the tour bus is one of the most beautiful ever.
13. The (Original) Star Wars Trilogy
Even those stupid Ewoks in ROTJ can't destroy the impact of this trilogy. Groundbreaking in its effects working, tremendously entertaining with its space-fairy-tale story, the reason that it still lives on as a classic can be described in two words: Harrison Ford. You can watch how a star is born. Without Han Solo this movies wouldn't be as fun as they are. He has the screen presence, he gets the best lines and he is the emotional core of the story,
12. The Fugitive
Another Harrison Ford movie. Here he delivers one of his best performances as Dr. Richard Kimble, chased by an equally impressive Tommy Lee Jones. This is a thriller-masterpiece, which grabs you a the credits (which go on like 20 minutes) and never lets you go again. You'll be pressed in your seat by the excitement and the great action-sequences (Train Crash! Barrage! St. Patrick's Day!) Even after many, many repeat viewings this is still exciting and fun
11. Singin' in the Rain
The best movie musical ever. Gene Kelly is so good, it is unbelievable. Set in Hollywood during the hard transition from silent movie to sound, this is a film-buffs wet dream. The musical numbers are extraordinary choreographed and the songs spectacular.

Why is it any good?
Quite simply the best family movie there ever was. It's a heartwarming tale with impressive animal acts and visual effects. Movies can't be any sweeter.

Witness (USA 1985)

While in the city a young Amish boy witnesses a murder. As he identifies a police officer not only his life is threatened but that of the only trustworthy cop as well. They try to hide in the Amish hometown of the Boy where the Cop clashes with the different lifestyle

Why is it any good?
Harrison Ford has never been better than this. It is a perfect thriller and a perfect culture-clash-drama at the same time. One of many awesome movies Peter Weir has given us.

I may have to see it again. As I remember it, it was an a-bit-above-average-children movie.

Not expected this movie here. It's very good. A-/B+

Probably the best screenplay there ever was. This tale of big ambitions and even bigger betrayal is sophisticated and entertaining at the same day. Deservingly a big winner at the Oscars

Jerry Maguire (USA 1996)

What's it about?
Aspiring actress Eve maneuvers her way into the life of Broadway star Margo Channing.

Why is it any good?
Forget the Oscar for Cold Mountain, this is still the best performance by Zellweger (and she has never been more beautful either). It's an all-around perfect ensemble with Jonathan Lipnicki being the cutest that ever graced the screen. Cuba Gooding Jr. is hilarious and Tom Cruise delivers a great performance. His chemistry with Zellweger is stunning. This is a wonderful, wonderful romance. Cameron Crowe is a genious.

Jerry Maguire is a very very good choice. Great feel-good movie. Tom Cruise gives one of his best performances and Gooding Junior is great too.

Garden State (USA 2004)

What's it about?
After being put on anti-depressiva by his father, a boy returns to his home when his mother dies. When he meets a girl that is completely the opposite of him (read: emotional) he crawls out of his shell and isolation

Why is it any good?
This one had me hooked from the first trailer on. Usually there's a letdown when these things happen, but not here. It is probably the best directing debut of the last thirty years - at least. While one can't argue with the merits of this film, the music, the visuals, the chemistry, Natalie (!), I understand if people don't agree with me on ranking it so high. But there's only a small difference between a good/great film and a masterpiece and it lies within the viewer. If you can emotionally connect to the story and the characters it is a masterpiece and I totally could with this one.

I still have to see this one.

Jerry Maguire is a superb film, im glad it so high up!!!!!!!

North by Northwest (USA 1959)

Why is it any good?
It can't get much better than Hitchcock at the top of his game. It is the defining thriller of all-time with unforgettable sequences (cornfield, Mount Rushmore), unforgettable performances and a very smart script.

Well, I saw it about 4-5 years ago. Wasn't terrible impressed by it.

The Indiana Jones Trilogy (USA 1981/84/89)

Three adventures of an archaeologist hunting precious artefacts

Why is it any good?
Even though the second one is not on par with the other two movies, this is the best trilogy there ever was. It has non-stop-action and non-stop-fun. Ford is awesome in his trademark role. The leveling board for all action/adventure movies. Doubtful that any movie will ever come close.

You da' man, Indiana Jones is classic stuff.

Love Indy. One of the best trilogies ever made. Just awesome entertaining movies.

Why is it any good?
The most important movie ever made. A haunting story that manages to capture the unimaginable perversity of the Nazis. Not the movie you wanna see over and over again, but a masterpiece!

Schindlers List is a very good powerful striong film, but it is on everybodys list...apart from mine, so its getting boring now.
